The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) provides licensing, testing and enforcement services to goods vehicles, buses and coaches operating in Great Britain.
When you are a Courier and your Van is loaded up with Parcels how do you know if you have exceeded the legal load limit? VOSA has the power to ensure vans are legally compliant and also says that excess weight is in the top 5 offences.
The Road Traffic Act 1988 – this requires that van operator and driver be responsible for ensuring that the van is not overloaded. There are systems available to check and monitor the loading of a vehicle such as the Tholos Overload Protection System details of which can be found here.
When developing their system another concern that Tholos discovered was that vehicles are not only sometimes overweight but can often be under the weight limit but incorrectly loaded which would affect handling and tyre wear. Whether you use a third party system or prefer to monitor your vehicle load yourself, you must be aware of the penalties detailed above and understand the importance of loading your vehicle correctly. VOSAs “Your Van: Best Practice Guide” detailed in our previous news article here gives advice on correct loading of your vehicle.
At Aldium as well as trying to keep you up to date with news that we feel is relevant and provide you with tips and advice to assist you, we also offer cheap Courier Van insurance quotations and could save you money.
Our specialist training courses are designed to help you avoid the pitfalls and operate more efficiently. As part of your O licence obligations and the Road Traffic Act 1988, your declaration to ensure your Trailers are maintained to a roadworthy standard includes ensuring your drivers carry out daily walk around checks of your vehicles.

Record keeping of the hours worked by a driver is another area where the domestic regulations are somewhate more lenient than their EU counterpart.
Operator Compliance Record Sheets (OCRS) in a driver and operator friendly book which combines many legal requirements in one.
Our newly designed OCRS book has been developed from discussions with those involved in all aspects of transport operations from the driver to the wages clerks with one aim firmly in mind namely to ensure that good compliance management is maintained. A4 pad for recording and managing details of driver licenses to ensure that drivers are legal to drive. Light Goods Vehicles, often known as ‘white van man’, are being targeted for roadside inspections in anew campaign by VOSA who revealed that they are  involved in twice as many accidents as HGVs and have an MOT failure rate of 50%. The need for this new campaign is further demonstrated by statistics from VOSA checks revealing that light goods vehicles are prohibited six out of ten times, and when weighed, these vehicles are overweight three quarters of the time. Many lorry drivers see this as an unfair advantage as they face a significantly higher level of regulation than than light goods vehicle drivers but more seriously it poses a higher threat to the safety of all road users.
All employers also have responsibility under Health and Safety legislation to ensure so far as reasonably practicable the health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected by their work activities.
A mixed tactical approach will be used by VOSA to address the operator who is ignorant of the requirements.
There are a number of different ways to save money and help pay down debt or save for a big ticket items. Some people go to extremes, but here at Vosa we believe a balanced life is most comfortable. Keep healthy snacks, like almonds or protein powder,  in your office drawers as well as your car. When it is your birthday, many restaurants will let you eat for free, or at least get a free dessert! When completing milestones, such as your 25th birthday, or retiring, make sure to let your insurance company know.
If you do not use your land line often or need it for your security system, consider cancelling it and using your cell phone as your only phone number. Make sure your cellular phone plan has free evening and weekend minutes that start as early as possible. Force yourself to wait at least a day, or a week, to think things over before making any large purchases. Speaking of buying in bulk, if you are single or have a small family, consider joining up with friends or family to purchase bulk products together to save further money.

Rather than throwing money away in rent, consider buying a house that you can have roommates to rent to and use their rent payments towards the mortgage. When you get a raise, pretend you did not and automatically put the extra money into a saving account.
Many new cars are failing their very first MOT despite being just three years old, a BBC Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed. Figures released by VOSA, the government agency that oversees the test, detail which cars pass, which fail and why.
The VOSA data, which lists every car and small van tested in 2007, was secured by the BBC's Martin Rosenbaum, 18 months after submitting a FOI request. Fairway Motors are a DVLA and VOSA authorised car repairs, car services and MOT test centre. Fairway Motors  is one of the largest independent garages in Chingford, with over 28 years of trading experience and knowledge of the surrounding areas. We offer competitive rates for Car Repairs, Services, Car MOTs, Motorbike MOTs; consistently ensuring an excellent service and customer satisfaction. And because we are a family-run business; our values, etiquette and ethos has established a strong community of customers that has kept them coming back, year after year.
Risk Solutions recently helped the NAO perform a VfM review of the agency's activities in this area, with particular responsibility for investigating the agency's risk-based approach to targeting its enforcement activities on HGVs, buses and coaches. We also provide network approved Goods in Transit and Liability Insurance along with cheap Courier Breakdown cover.
As a result we are able to offer you a comprehensive range of transport support items including digital tachograph products, charts and accessories. We supply tachograph analysis services and specialist services to help identify problems and assist in the event of an accident or VOSA inspection.
The check should cover the external condition, ensuring in particular that the lights, tyres, wheel fixings, bodywork, trailer coupling, load and ancillary serviceable.
Although drivers can elect to use a tachograph, if fitted to the vehicle, to record their hours of work, most goods vehicles drivers opt for the completion of a written record book whereas there is no requirement at all for passenger vehicle drivers to do likewise unless they drive both passenger and goods vehicles.
This brings mutual benefits to both operators and drivers alike in the event of either roadside checks or operator visits by DVSA. They will be subject to enforcement action at compliance checks, married to the carrot of educational assistance to enable them to raise their standards. Less water usage adds up over time and will lower your water bill and the environment will thank you too! If a store is out of a product on sale, ask for a rain-check and do not consider buying it until it goes on sale again. No tickets and no accidents means lower insurance rates and no big bills from the bodyshop! This is the easiest and best way to save and make money and spending the 1-2 hours to set this up can have a massive and positive impact on your financial health.
Then let your car insurance company know you’re driving less as this might save you a few more bucks on your insurance premium. In the summer, keep the air conditioning off and use a fan and cold glasses of water.  Or, in the spirit of automation, invest in a Nest Learning Thermostat which will automatically set the temperature of your home based on your patterns which will lower your heating and cooling bills and look uber sexy on the wall while doing it. If you rule out the Starbucks, fast food, impulse purchases, and more you will be surprised at just how much you can save. They show nearly a third of Renault Meganes, a popular family car, typically failed their very first MOT, which is carried out on most cars on their third birthday. It included data not just on newish cars but also old nails, cars that have seen younger days but have racked up huge mileage with little trouble.
If you recalculate the data after stripping out the double counting for various cars, their failure rate rises. Drivers must be able to report any defects that could prevent the safe operation of the vehicles.
The minority who have no desire to comply will be subject to enforcement action in an effort to force compliance. High protein snakes make you feel full longer which can help you avoid fast-food drive-thrus and expensive trips to the vending machine!

If you cannot pay off your debt, consider doing a 0% interest balance transfer to give yourself more time.
Be careful though, and make sure to do it on a WiFi network and not your cellular data plan. This may come as an unwelcome surprise if you've shelled out up to £23,000 for one a few years before. Some readers wondered whether the data revealed more about the car's owners than the cars themselves.
For the Vauxhall Corsa, another car that frequently failed its first MOT, its failure rate rises from 24.7% to 28%.
Boasting two MOT ramps and five fully-trained members of staff, we can work on any make or model of car and MOT any make or model of motorbike. Drivers may be prosecuted for the existence of defects found on the vehicles they drive if they are considered partly of wholly responsiblefor the existence of them, however the operator's responsibilty, under section 6 of the DfT guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, to have a system in place to quality monitor these checks. The first steps in this initiative will be a programme of checks in twenty cities throughout the year to raise VOSA’s profile with LGV operators in specific market sectors, and the first of these will be directed towards the building trade. A BBC Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed many best-selling cars are failing their very first MOT despite being just a few years old. This is worked out by estimating the double counting as half the number of fails for windscreens, tyres and lights. The work involves inspecting vehicles and driver’s records at depots and at roadside checks around the country. This will be allied to cooperation with trade bodies and associations to convey the message that VOSA are determined to raise the standards of the LGV fleet through joint working, education, assistance, and if required, enforcement action. Notwithstanding this, Bill Duffy, a trained MOT tester, says the majority of cars fail for faults that are linked to maintenance. JazzIn fact, counting just those cars where at least 20,000 were tested, four of the top 10 were French made. As chief operating officer for Nationwide Autocentre, a garage network that conducts 250,000 tests a year, he's had plenty of experience of testing cars.
This uses information about operators and their performance in previous inspections to identify those perceived to pose a higher risk to road safety.
At the other end of the scale, those that failed the least in this group were Japanese models.
It checks whether the lights and indicators work, if the brakes are up to scratch, the tyres have enough tread on them and whether the windscreen is sound and the wipers working. Vehicles operated by higher risk operators are then more likely to be 'pulled over' for roadside checks.
StrippingA chipped windscreen or worn out wiper blade can fail a car, as can brakes that don't stop the car in time, or worn tyres that have not been replaced. Many of these faults, Mr Rosenbaum's readers argue, are down to the owner failing to maintain his car rather than the vehicle maker. In fact, it would appear that the pass rate for many of the vehicles may be worse than first appears. This is because VOSA double counts the pass rate where a minor fault is fixed by the testing station. After all many people only want a car for three years, and then they'll go and buy another," he says.
