General BMW Questions Use this forum to ask general question about the BMW ownership and keep up on the latest BMW news. This is one of the better ones (modified from a Bimmerfest posting of the past for better organization so as to be more usable to the user). I remember looking at this a long time ago and noticing that it's not quite right for my wagon, and my M6 is nowhere in sight.
Great information, the only problem is the text is so wide I can't,and I'm sure others can't print it for a reference. If that doesn't work for you, the originals on Bimmerfest were in two parts (see the referenced E39 sticky thread if that helps) so maybe printing those (which are half the size) would work for you?

Your best bet is an enthusiast site for your particular vehicle that might be able to decode the VIN for you. At one point this was possible, but as far as I know, for Chevy; not in the last 25 years (maybe longer). Pontiac's '61- early 80s paperwork was purchased by a private company that sells the paperwork (Pontiac Historical Services). It was then assigned a scheduled production date based on availability of trim, parts, other components, and taking into account downtime and production workloads at the assembly plant. A scheduled production date was very often out of sequence with the Consecutive Unit Number.

That is a question I have as well, since my S260 plans got flushed by the economic toilet, I am considering an '07 Exige S for next year instead and want to know myself. The gist of the problem is that GM treats the vehicle attributes section (position 4,5,6,7) differently depending on whether it is a truck or a car. Normally what I do is design my own crude ETL process to import the data into an RDMBS - each table roughly correlates with the major VIN breakdown.
To look up a VIN is simply a matter of querying the VIEW with each major character code position breakdown of the VIN string.
Having worked in this industry, first, asking a question like this on SO is way out of the ballpark.
Based on your answer to my comment regarding if you can identify the type of vehicle by using other values, a possible approach could be to have a master table with the common fields and 2 detail tables, each one with the appropriate fields for either cars or trucks.
As for DML SQL you would only need to control prior to insert or update sentences whether you have a car or a truck model. Of course you would need to make sure that only one detail exists for each master row, either on the car detail table or on the truck detail table.

Why you do not define both of these rules for the decoding; only one will resolve a valid result. Not the answer you're looking for?Browse other questions tagged sql database-design or ask your own question.
It's shrunk down to the minimum that would barely fit in a Bimmerfest post also, so there's not a lot I can do to make the text more printable other than those suggestions above. By joining our community, at no cost, you will have access to post topics, communicate privately with other members (PM), respond to polls, upload content and access many other special features.
And more often than not, the actual production date (the day the car rolled off the line) was earlier or later than what was originally planned. IMHO it would be better to return different data structures for cars, trucks, motorbikes, caravans, etc. There might be a metal plate in the glove box or somewhere called a Protect A Plate with the option codes.
Therefore, a Thunderbird with a Consecutive Unit Number of 105678 may have actually been produced and ready for shipping before a Thunderbird with a Consecutive Unit Number of 105432.
The Consecutive Unit Number should be considered to be a unique identification that shows when the order was received and when it was planned for production. There are common elements that they all share (weight, number of wheels, colour, etc.) but you should model it on what is in the real world.
