So this is your chance to own the first 2010 Corvette ZR1 and with the Certificate of Origin, you’ll be listed as the first owner on the title. About the only downside we see with this beautiful Jetstream Blue ZR1 is that Hubbard GM Center painted their dealer name on the rear bumper right under the cross flags logo. The gist of the problem is that GM treats the vehicle attributes section (position 4,5,6,7) differently depending on whether it is a truck or a car. Normally what I do is design my own crude ETL process to import the data into an RDMBS - each table roughly correlates with the major VIN breakdown. To look up a VIN is simply a matter of querying the VIEW with each major character code position breakdown of the VIN string. Having worked in this industry, first, asking a question like this on SO is way out of the ballpark. Based on your answer to my comment regarding if you can identify the type of vehicle by using other values, a possible approach could be to have a master table with the common fields and 2 detail tables, each one with the appropriate fields for either cars or trucks. As for DML SQL you would only need to control prior to insert or update sentences whether you have a car or a truck model. Of course you would need to make sure that only one detail exists for each master row, either on the car detail table or on the truck detail table.

Why you do not define both of these rules for the decoding; only one will resolve a valid result. It appears that Faisal Shahzad, who allegedly attempted to set off an incendiary or explosive device inside a Nissan Pathfinder in New York City's Times Square last week, didn't know a lot about cars. He (or perhaps someone else) had filed off the rusty 1993 Pathfinder's 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) tag, visible through a corner of the windshield. But he was apparently unaware that new cars have the VIN in multiple locations throughout the vehicle. This practice, instituted in 1981, was intended to fight car theft in two ways: It let a vehicle's original VIN be located even if a different dash tag was substituted (to re-title a stolen car), and it let law enforcement officers identify the source of parts stolen from vehicles later dismantled in "chop shops" for their engines, transmissions, and major body panels. Today, VINs may be found on a vehicle's dash panel, firewall, engine, steering column, radiator-support bracket, door or door post, inner fender liner, or other places--depending on manufacturer.

Some car-theft experts even advise etching a vehicle's VIN onto the windows, on the theory that it will deter thieves who would have to replace every window to resell it if stolen. In the case of the Times Square Pathfinder, New York Police Department Detective John Wright found the VIN on its engine block. That led officers to the vehicle's Connecticut title, and its last registered owner, who had sold it to Shahzad via Craigslist.
In fact, there was a unique set of circumstances that saw the actual production of three (3) VIN #0001 ZR1s.
IMHO it would be better to return different data structures for cars, trucks, motorbikes, caravans, etc. There are common elements that they all share (weight, number of wheels, colour, etc.) but you should model it on what is in the real world.
