For those with the Oshkosh Truck chassis the following information from my Oshkosh Truck manual might be enlightening.
The Chassis Vehicle Identification Number is stamped in the left hand frame rail just behind the left front wheel. The final manufacturer, who adds any additional equipment to the vehicle, provides the GAWR and GVWR certification plate. The car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) is the identifying code for a SPECIFIC automobile.
The VIN can be found by looking at the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

If it’s more convenient to individually obtain the information contained in a VIN, there is actually no need to take yourself to the hassle of locating the VIN on the vehicle. 1) There is a paper sticker on the interior of all mobile homes manufactured since June of 1976, called the a€?data plate,a€? which lists the VIN number (also called the serial number), along with other facts about the manufacture of the home.
The gist of the problem is that GM treats the vehicle attributes section (position 4,5,6,7) differently depending on whether it is a truck or a car. Normally what I do is design my own crude ETL process to import the data into an RDMBS - each table roughly correlates with the major VIN breakdown. To look up a VIN is simply a matter of querying the VIEW with each major character code position breakdown of the VIN string. Having worked in this industry, first, asking a question like this on SO is way out of the ballpark. Based on your answer to my comment regarding if you can identify the type of vehicle by using other values, a possible approach could be to have a master table with the common fields and 2 detail tables, each one with the appropriate fields for either cars or trucks.
As for DML SQL you would only need to control prior to insert or update sentences whether you have a car or a truck model. Of course you would need to make sure that only one detail exists for each master row, either on the car detail table or on the truck detail table. Why you do not define both of these rules for the decoding; only one will resolve a valid result.

The letters I, O, and Q are not used in VINs, at least from 1981 until today (and into the future). The first 3 digits of the VIN are known as the "WMI", which is an acronym for "World Manufacturer Identifier". Tenth: The tenth digit is the year, which is amazingly helpful if you're in a junkyard or showing off to your friends.
In addition to VINs there are also a plethora of option codes located somewhere in the interior of every vehicle. The last thing worth noting is that some foreign car manufacturers switch around these VIN numbers slightly. The VIN serves as the car’s fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. The easiest way to view it is to stand outside the vehicle on the driver’s side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. Some of these factors involve essential details about the car being enrolled for insurance. The VIN typically provides information on a vehicle’s model, body type, make, and even the presence of anti-theft and safety devices or features.
There is no compelling reason to thoroughly learn about the VIN but it is a convenient detail worth knowing—and there are some insurance companies that would compulsorily ask for it.
Also, occasionally a homeowner decides to protect the data plate by removing it and putting it away for safe-keeping, and you will beA  presented with a data plate that is detached from the wall. You will likely have to remove the skirting across at least part of the front of the home to get to the I-beam. Also, construction standards vary in different parts of the country and it is possible that important issues related to your area may not be covered here.
We most often find it on the wall of the master bedroom closet, but it might also be located near the back door or under the kitchen sink on the inside of a cabinet door. That encompasses the country of origin, the manufacturer, and the division that the vehicle is built for. This doesn't necessarily mean the "make" of the car though, because companies like General Motors have many different divisions.
In the case of General Motors, the division would be the more specific Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile or whatever it is. They include things like safety, engine size, body style, and the series that the vehicle is. So if you have a special option,heavy-duty truck with the eight lug wheels, or a towing package, this is the digit that will tell you "Hey this vehicle has a special suspension and brake package." It might also reference a specific safety restraint package, like if the vehicle had a two vs.
In the 1980's for example, General Motors built full size trucks that were C and K series along with and R and V series. So if the vehicle is a convertible, a two door, four door, or wagon, it is defined in these two digits. You can easily figure out which years match up to which letters and which numbers with the simple handy dandy chart below. Long ago, they used to be actual printed pieces of paper, that were stuffed into the seat springs. On many Volkswagens for example, the 3rd through 8th digits are in a different order than the American brand cars and trucks.
One vehicle related detail or factor that many usually disregard or ignore is the vehicle identification number or the VIN.
This number can be found on the car’s dashboard (near the driver’s seat), windshield, windows, on one of the wheels, or on the car’s engine.
Likewise, the VIN can be useful in determining if a particular vehicle is part of an ongoing or previous recall.


The numbers are stamped into the metal in letters about 2-inches high, running horizontally or vertically. Before we go any further on this automotive journey, I think we need to briefly talk about redundancy. So if you were to go to a junkyard, this digit is really helpful for vehicles that had two different engines during the same year. This doesn't often matter so much, unless you are talking about certain cars that have major followings. This is normally not a super important number as far as buying auto parts goes, unless you have one of those vehicles that changed production specifications halfway through a production run. In modern cars, it is usually a printed sticker in the glove compartment, console, or trunk. This typically long series of numbers and letters are hardly given due notice but it is something most car insurance companies usually ask for. The final eight set of numbers and letters, on the other hand, is a unique number for a vehicle and it is used to distinguish it from other cars from the same manufacturer.
There are common elements that they all share (weight, number of wheels, colour, etc.) but you should model it on what is in the real world.
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the 17-digit string of numbers that an automotive manufacturer assigns to a specific vehicle that it produces. In today's example, the tenth digit is "M", so you dance over to the handy dandy chart, and see that "M" is 1991. So, you might have a vehicle that had different mirrors if it was built in April of 2004, than if it were built  in August of 2004. When you combine the VIN number with the option codes, you get the entire genetic makeup of the vehicle from top to bottom.
Typically the engine, vehicle series, body type, restraint system, and model are the ones to watch out for. Manufacturers create their own format and company abbreviation, and sometimes and sometimes the state abbreviation is placed first and the manufacturer abbreviation may be more than three digits. You can find out a lot about your car or truck if you are able to read and decode its VIN number, and that's why we are going to show you how to do just that. Both of these trucks could have come with a 4.3 liter that was a Z series engine or a W series engine.
If you have one of those vehicles, you need to know where it was in the production line, which is where these last six digits become important. The country, make, check digit, year, plant, and serial number are usually in the same positions regardless of the vehicle manufacturer.
It should be noted though that the regular VIN does not make use of the letters O, Q, and I to avoid confusion.
This is great in a junkyard because you can walk up to a VIN number and say "Hey this is a VIN J, which means it's a 1988". O, for instance, may be mistaken for “zero” similar to how I can be wrongly read as “one” when used alongside other numbers and letters. Vehicle manufacturers could have used 8 digits, 10 digits, 25 digits, or really whatever they wanted. So, to make America a better place, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put their foot down in 1981, and made all of the car manufacturers use 17 digits.
It is called a check digit because the purpose of it is to check the rest of the VIN number for legitimacy. The 11th digit of the VIN number is the one that confirms the plant at which the vehicle was built.
