Definition of Checks and Balances; principle of government under which separate branches are empowered to prevent actions by other branches and are induced to share power. It simply works; The American system of checks and balances has worked well over the course of America's history. With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. Even though some huge clashes have occurred when vetoes have been overridden or appointees have been rejected, these occasions are rare. Cons: The biggest pro of having checks and balances is that no one group of people can decide how the country is going to be run. Locke had argued that all humanbeings were born with three natural rights, life, liberty and property and the purpose of government was to protect those rights.

Every year in November the people of our nation vote on laws , propositions, government officials and every four years we vote for our next president. They are of fundamental importance in tripartite governments, such as that of the United States, which separate powers among legislative, executive, and judicial branches. There are many interconnections between the various branches of government, but for the most part, the three branches keep the other two from going awry. In 2008, Obama ran against McCain and this year (2012 presidential election) Obama will run against McRomney. Even though there have been times when one branch has risen preeminent, overall the three branches have achieved a workable balance with no one branch holding all the governmental power. For instance, if the president was the sole interpreter of the constitution, there would be nothing to stop him from saying that detaining people indefinitely without arraigning them is constitutional, etc.

With the balance of power through having the judicial branch to interpret law and the constitution, there is another level of review, which preserves our personal liberties. This document was written by the people, for the people and for the creating of a "more perfect union".
