There are 227 million cars and trucks on the road today, and the one thing they have in common is that they're all branded with a Vehicle Identification Number, or a VIN. Each VIN is broken up into three sections, and in those sections each character has a specific meaning. The first section of a VIN is the World Manufacturer Identifier, a three-digit code assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers based on what country a car is built in, the manufacturer, and-depending on the brand-either what division within the company actually builds the car, or the type of vehicle. The first digit of the VIN determines the geographical region the car is built in, regardless of where the manufacturer is headquartered. After the general area is nailed down, the next digit identifies the country in particular, and which manufacturer in that country. For instance, the United States has some 33 second-digit codes that can be assigned to region codes 1, 4, and 5. The third digit represents, depending on which manufacturer, the division within the company or a specific body style.
Each manufacturer codes the fourth through eighth digits of the VIN differently-with specific digits in a different order-but the information contained in it remains the same. The numeric characters are assigned a numeric value, and each position is multiplied by a succession of decreasing weighted numbers. The final section of every VIN is known as Vehicle ID Section, and comprises the VIN's tenth through seventeenth digits. The final six digits are sequential and show a car's place in line during a production run.
Once a VIN has been coded, it's usually stamped on a steel plaque that is riveted to the driver's side of the dashboard. If dashboards can be swapped, and with them the VIN plaque, doesn't that make it easy for car thieves to whitewash a vehicle's provenance by purchasing a wrecked car and switching the identifying parts over to a stolen one? No photos, news stories, graphics, or logos may be used or reproduced without written permission. The letters I, O, and Q are not used in VINs, at least from 1981 until today (and into the future). The first 3 digits of the VIN are known as the "WMI", which is an acronym for "World Manufacturer Identifier".
Tenth: The tenth digit is the year, which is amazingly helpful if you're in a junkyard or showing off to your friends. In addition to VINs there are also a plethora of option codes located somewhere in the interior of every vehicle.
The last thing worth noting is that some foreign car manufacturers switch around these VIN numbers slightly. When assigning those characters, every letter and numeral is used except for I, O, and Q, since they can be easily confused with 1 or 0. Made up of the fourth through ninth digits, this identifier contains the information that pins down exactly what kind of car the VIN is being assigned to, as well as a "check digit" that validates the VIN.
The model of car, trim level, engine, and safety equipment are all contained in these four characters. Usually starting with "100001" and counting up, the sequential number allows manufacturers to know exact cutoffs for when certain parts were used, making recalls easier to coordinate or service bulletins applicable to only a certain range of vehicles. As restorers of classic cars have discovered, the plate itself is sacrosanct-it's illegal in many states to remove the plaque for any reason, including restoration-and if that plate is ever removed and lost, the car's VIN is recorded as scrapped, and the state issues a new vehicle ID number.
That encompasses the country of origin, the manufacturer, and the division that the vehicle is built for.
This doesn't necessarily mean the "make" of the car though, because companies like General Motors have many different divisions. In the case of General Motors, the division would be the more specific Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile or whatever it is.
They include things like safety, engine size, body style, and the series that the vehicle is. So if you have a special option,heavy-duty truck with the eight lug wheels, or a towing package, this is the digit that will tell you "Hey this vehicle has a special suspension and brake package." It might also reference a specific safety restraint package, like if the vehicle had a two vs. In the 1980's for example, General Motors built full size trucks that were C and K series along with and R and V series. So if the vehicle is a convertible, a two door, four door, or wagon, it is defined in these two digits. You can easily figure out which years match up to which letters and which numbers with the simple handy dandy chart below. Long ago, they used to be actual printed pieces of paper, that were stuffed into the seat springs. On many Volkswagens for example, the 3rd through 8th digits are in a different order than the American brand cars and trucks.
In 1981 the format for VIN was standadized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States. They are originally issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1979 and 1980; ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, respectively.

It's a 17-character number with letters and digits that you can find in the left front corner of the windshield (in the photo) or on the manufacturing label on the door jamb.

The CARFAX® history report also shows the number of previous owners, some service records and states or provinces where the car was previously registered.
If it shows that one year the car was driven for 15,000 miles and another year for only 3,000 miles, you may need to check the vehicle more carefully. Data gleaned from these digits are what allow insurance agents and banks to tell, at a glance, exactly what car they're dealing with.
But manufacturers also print the VIN on self-destructing tags that are placed on easily removable parts, and stamp the number at various places on the car's body and frame. Similar to the problems that telephone companies faced with running out of area codes, the seemingly inexhaustible supply of VINs is rapidly drying up.
Before we go any further on this automotive journey, I think we need to briefly talk about redundancy. So if you were to go to a junkyard, this digit is really helpful for vehicles that had two different engines during the same year.
This doesn't often matter so much, unless you are talking about certain cars that have major followings. This is normally not a super important number as far as buying auto parts goes, unless you have one of those vehicles that changed production specifications halfway through a production run.
In modern cars, it is usually a printed sticker in the glove compartment, console, or trunk.
It required all over-the-road-vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which do not include the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0). Compatible but somewhat different implementations of these ISO standards have been adopted by the European Union and the United States of America. According to the NHTSA, there are approximately 452,000 cases of odometer fraud per year in the United States.
For these reasons, used car buyers should consider checking used car history records BEFORE signing the contract. And, just as with area codes, the solution is deceptively simple: SAE has found that by easing restrictions on the use of letters and digits, an exponential number of available VIN combinations can be created. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the 17-digit string of numbers that an automotive manufacturer assigns to a specific vehicle that it produces. In today's example, the tenth digit is "M", so you dance over to the handy dandy chart, and see that "M" is 1991. So, you might have a vehicle that had different mirrors if it was built in April of 2004, than if it were built  in August of 2004. When you combine the VIN number with the option codes, you get the entire genetic makeup of the vehicle from top to bottom. Typically the engine, vehicle series, body type, restraint system, and model are the ones to watch out for.
You can find out a lot about your car or truck if you are able to read and decode its VIN number, and that's why we are going to show you how to do just that. Both of these trucks could have come with a 4.3 liter that was a Z series engine or a W series engine. If you have one of those vehicles, you need to know where it was in the production line, which is where these last six digits become important. The country, make, check digit, year, plant, and serial number are usually in the same positions regardless of the vehicle manufacturer.

In general, cars that have been repaired after an accident are more likely to develop rust, as well as mechanical and electrical problems. This is great in a junkyard because you can walk up to a VIN number and say "Hey this is a VIN J, which means it's a 1988". Vehicle manufacturers could have used 8 digits, 10 digits, 25 digits, or really whatever they wanted. So, to make America a better place, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put their foot down in 1981, and made all of the car manufacturers use 17 digits. It is called a check digit because the purpose of it is to check the rest of the VIN number for legitimacy.
The 11th digit of the VIN number is the one that confirms the plant at which the vehicle was built.
