I haven't had to do this for a year or so, but any Advanced Auto Parts does (or at least did) offer this for free. Advance Auto Parts usually has a code reader behind the counter that you can borrow and look up what's wrong yourself in the parking lot.
A local (Delmar based) company has created a product which will remotely notify your chosen mechanic of a check engine light and what the code is. With my Jeep Grand Cherokee, if I turn the key from off to accessory 3 times the code shows up in my odometer.
Fact 2: You do NOT need to buy a new gas cap if the code is telling you the gas cap is the culprit.
Usually the code is vague and a pain in the neck to determine exactly what's triggering it.
Ever wish you had a smart, savvy friend with the inside line on what's happening around the Capital Region? Here are a few highlights from the past week on AOA: + Megan asked about preferred local banks or credit unions for personal banking. The ongoing drama in Syracuse over what to do about replacing I-81 through the city is worth watching here because The Ongoing 787 Discussion. Synthetic and Full Synthetic Oil Change Service by Ace Auto Repair serving the entire Salt Lake Valley. You might be driving at full speed on the highway or cruising through town when you notice the check engine light in your dash has come on. The Check Engine light, formally known as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), is a signal from the car’s engine computer that something is wrong. A loose or damaged gas cap is the least expensive, yet very common, problem that can cause your service engine soon light to come on.
The mass air flow sensor calculates the amount of fuel needed to mix efficiently with the oxygen in the engine. Local parts stores can check engine codes for free, but this will just give you an error code, and it just the beginning of the diagnostic process.
We provide free diagnostics with written estimates. Many people ignore warning lights if the car still seems to drive the way it used to, however, a check engine light is a red flag that something in your vehicle is amiss. To get your check engine light diagnosis or repair, contact the professional mechanics at Ace Auto.

Even if you find a good mechanic, if you’re like me, you shiver at the thought of paying hundreds of dollars for major vehicle repairs. Every vehicle recently sold in the United States has an onboard diagnostic system that self-diagnoses a variety of vehicle issues through the vehicle’s diagnostic computer. OBD-II codes, or PID’s can help diagnose powertrain, emission, and other vehicle issues when diagnostic readings are out of accepted ranges.
I was relieved to find out that the cause for the light to go on in my car was a possible vapor leak coming from my gas cap, caused by a weak spring in the cap. If you want to take things yet a step further and not go to the auto parts store every time, you can purchase your own OBD-II scanner.
I’ve owned an automotive repair shop for almost 30 years, The first thing we check is the gas cap, and there is no charge for that! Hello, you seem like a person who is up front and honest, that is why I would like to ask you a question , and I hope you might be able to help, I bought a used car, I traded in mine ,and gave the guy cash, so all together I ended up paying like $5500, for a 1999 lexes, nice car motor is wonderful, but about 2 months down the road the check engine light when on , and so did the traction light, I went to see the guy I bought the car from , and he said oh it could be the cat. If my check engine light came on and someone scanned it real quick and got a code would that tell me the problem with my car? Unfortunately auto parts store, have quit coding cars and will no longer turn the check engine light off. I don’t mean to be rude, but may I ask what a single mother with little money was doing buying a lexus?
Shareah nailed it on the head, if your that broke you shouldnt have bought something like that. I can tell you from experience you’re never going to get a good deal from any dealer or private seller. Im a certified buttwiper I guess I shouldnt still be rolling in my 21 year old cadillac that I have had for 8 years! Hi my name is Linda and I have a problem that’s very similar to what you went through Lisa.
Here in NC a yearly inspection is required so the dreaded engine light can really be a nuisance when it comes on right before inspection is due. ACTUALLY THOSE SCANNERS ARE VERY INACCURATE THE CHEAP ONES FROM ADVANCE THAT IS JUST MY OPINION.
If your gas cap is not properly sealing, it causes pressure issues and your check engine light will come on. How uncanny to read this article considering i just came back from the Toyota dealership that gave me an estimate of $94 to run diagnostics on my car to figure out why the check engine light was on.
But the good thing about getting the error code was that i googled it before going to the dealer and had a pretty good idea of what the problem was and how much it would cost so that i could level head with the dealership instead of them taking advantage of me not knowing anything about cars and charging me a ridiculous amount.
Coming from a family of mechanics, while this could be a good place to start, I wouldn’t rely on those stores to have the most up to date diagnostic equipment. Yeah, Fred, you’re the kind of money-grubbing dirtbag that give mechanics a BAD reputation.
I am one of those local mechanics I don’t charge for any brake job due to my wife and kids. Automotive air conditioning systems require routine maintenance to avoid breaking down or drying out.
The air conditioning system cools and removes humidity from the air through three main components; the compressor, condenser and evaporator. The alternator generates the electrical power to the car battery to power a cars electrical system. Some common symptom of wearing or failing alternator are; Battery warning lights, car not starting, the engine stalls while driving due to loss of electrical power, dimming of the lights and dashboard or a winding noise while driving. At our North Attleborough auto repair center alternator service is quick, easy, and affordable. A manual transmission clutch controls how much power is transmitted from the engine to the wheels by limiting torque. When you press the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch, pressure is applied to the middle of a diaphragm spring, pulling the pressure plate away from the clutch disc, disconnecting the clutch from the engine.
A control arm is a suspension link that is part of a cars’ suspension system connecting the chassis to the wheel hub. On the front of a car the control arm is attached to pivots known as a rubber bushing allowing the wheel hub to move up and down. A car engine produces a lot of heat as it runs and must be cooled to avoid engine damage, the vehicle cooling system is what keeps a car from overheating. In a liquid cooling system, a water pump pumps the coolant through the engine into the radiator where it’s cooled off. The water pump is a centrifugal pump located in the engine compartment that is driven by the crankshaft, it uses an impeller that circulates coolant whenever the engine is running. A heater core is a mini radiator part of the heating systems that is snuggled deep inside the center of your dash, it is used in heating the cabin of a vehicle.
A thermostat acts as a regulating valve that maintains a minimum operating temperature in a car’s engine.
The coolant reservoir is an expansion of the radiator that absorbers heat and access hot coolant.
A transmission cooler is typically added to the front of the radiator to cool the transmission fluid and prevent the transmission from overheating. There are two main radiator hoses that run from the radiator to the engine, the lower hose and the upper hose.

An exhaust system is a critical part of a car, it is made of several pipes that are designed to connect to each other.

An oxygen sensor is part of the emissions control system placed on the exhaust that feeds data to the computer to help the engine run efficiently and reduce emissions. The resonator is an acoustic device made of a hollow steel cylinder tube in an exhaust system that tunes the sound of the engine to something less brutal to the ear by canceling out a certain sound frequencies. The muffler decreases the noise in an exhaust created by the combustion process inside of the engine. The tailpipe also know as the exhaust pipe is the rear section of the exhaust system of a motor vehicle.
Whether you’re looking to repair or replace an exhaust system or a part of an exhaust system, Advanced Auto Repair offers quality exhaust repair in North Attleborough MA.

Chains like pep boys and Valvoline are always trying to make a mint off of persons that aren't knowledgeable about mechanics!
Unless of course you've lost your gas cap, in which case you need to pay more attention when getting gas.
Most auto mechanics no matter how well you know them (even if they are related to you) are going to try and screw you. You can indeed pass an inspection by removing the battery terminals which will turn off the check engine light.
I keep hearing about how great life is in the booming south and west, but when you actually go to these places, they're almost entirely unbearable. Discount Oil Change available when you visit Ace Auto for best oil change in West Jordan, UT. We can even tow your vehicle to our shop, and deliver it back to you when all repairs are completed. Loose or damaged gas caps result in millions of gallons of evaporated fuel each year across the nation. The O2 sensor is a critical part of the exhaust system, monitoring how much unburned oxygen is exiting the engine in the exhaust. Generally, catalytic converter repair is a secondary underlying program that is ignored for too long, such as a failed spark plug. You can buy a home diagnostic machine yourself, however, you would need to know how to read it. If you see the check engine light flashing and you don’t take care of it immediately, you are putting your car at risk for costlier future repairs and malfunctions. Advanced Auto Repair offers a Free Brake System Check Service for quick and accurate answers. Advanced Auto Repair offers a Free Check Engine Light Code Scan Retrieval Service for quick and accurate answers. The connector to this diagnostic system is called OBD-II (on-board diagnostic, version 2) and it is standardized for every vehicle sold in the US, 1996 and newer. But good luck finding one (perhaps, asking if they offer a free check engine light scan and their response is a good measuring stick for an honest mechanic).
With that money, you could have found a newer car with probably less miles that would be cheaper to fix.
If the average market value on a car is $10000 and you get one for $8000, be prepared to put in an extra $2000 to get it reliable.
They’re looking to get the most out of their sale, and if they are asking less than average there is a reason. I am just pissed at them taking a woman for granted, thinking we don’t know about cars.
Over a year ago I purchased a Chrysler 300 from a dealership it was finance for me through a bank for $16,000 and course I had some problems with it I think I’ve paid a total of $400 for repair since I bought it.
I have learned a lot from the Dodge forum and that is how I found out about pulling the codes myself.
To my luck i had gone to Sears Auto first that gave me the error code by running the quick diagnostic as your article lists, free of charge, which i then took to Toyota and didn’t pay a dime because it turned out to be a warranty issue!:) How often does that happen?! You come in thinking you know what’s wrong with your car, assuming we are going to scam you, and make a huge stink.
Don’t bother running around town when your car is still under bumper to bumper warranty!!
The only places that have those are car dealerships as they are quite expensive and they have to pay all update patches. Advanced Auto Repair offers a Free Air Condition System Inspection for quick and accurate answers.
The compressor is a pump driven by the serpentine belt that pressurizes high-pressure refrigerant gas and forces it out to the condenser. The Alternator is rotated by a serpentine belt that utilizes the circular movement of the engine crankshaft. Our mechanics check the alternators power output and the entire starting and charging system to find the exact problem before replacing the alternator. Over time axles do get worn out due to friction, overloading, bad carrier bearing or a severe bump on the road. Make sure you take care of your investment by providing it with the power necessary to get you where you need to be. When the battery is discharging the acid of the electrolyte reacts with the plates, changing their surface to lead sulfate. Our professional technician check the battery power and the entire starting and charging system to find the exact problem before replacing your car battery.
We connect the voltmeters’ positive test lead to the battery positive terminal, and the negative test lead to the battery negative terminal.

Catalytic converters today are “three-way” converters reducing nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and unburden hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water.
The OBDII monitors a bunch of sensors to make sure the proper amount of oxygen and gasoline are burned at the right temperature. Occasionally, the Check Engine light comes on when nothing is wrong with the car and go off by it self. Our highly trained mechanics will retrieve the codes FREE of charge and discuss your diagnostic and repair options. The clutch engages and disengages manual transmissions through friction between the clutch plate, clutch disc and flywheel. To engage the clutch, release the clutch pedal, the spring pushes the pressure plate against the clutch disc pressing against the flywheel, connecting the engine to the transmission. Our mechanics check the hydraulic system, master clutch cylinders and clutch slave cylinders before we start any clutch repair to find the exact problem before replacing the transmission clutch. The Bushings absorb small vibrations from the road acting as a secondary suspension to the main springs reducing noise and vehicle harshness.
We also test drive the vehicle before and after to make sure that your suspension is working properly.
Most cars use a liquid cooling system, circulating liquid mixed with an antifreeze solution around the engine so it can absorb and dissipate heat.
The water pump pumps coolant from the radiators’ lower tank to coolant passages around the engine block and cylinder head, the coolant absorbs the heat produced by the engine to keep it at optimal running temperature. When the heat is on, hot coolant from the vehicle’s engine block is passed through a bypass hose to a winding tube in the heater core where heat is transferred from the coolant to air that flows into the passenger compartment. A water pump pumps coolant from the radiator’s lower tank into the engine and is returned through the thermostat to the radiator upper tank in an overheated state. When coolant fluid overheats, it expands, causing the fluid to become highly pressurized that might block the coolant from entering into the radiator upper tank. When hot pressurized coolant is entering the radiator, excess pressurized coolant, also known as overflow, is pushed into the coolant overflow tank to stop a build up of high pressure that might block coolant from entering into the radiator upper tank. The radiator cooling fan is located at the front or rear of the radiator, it cools the coolant as it passes through the radiator.
Fluid heated by the transmission is sent to the transmission cooler, air moving over the fins of the cooler cools the fluid, which is sent back to the transmission through the return line.
The lower radiator hose is the hose that the water pump uses to draw cool coolant from the lower tank to the engine.
Full heating and cooling system repair including Water Pump, Thermostat Housing, Radiator, Radiator Pressure Cap, Coolant Reservoir, Radiator Fan, Transmission Cooler, Coolant flush, Radiator Clamps, Radiator Hoses replacement and repair. They also acts as a final gear reduction, slowing the rotational speed of the transmission before it hits the wheels.
All Wheel Drive vehicles usually have three differentials, a differential between each set of drive wheels and another differential between the front and the back wheels. Some of the components the drive belt powers are the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, air pump, windshield wipers and air condition compressor. Our experienced mechanics will inspect the belts for cracks, inspect the pulleys and bearings, remove and replace any damaged or worn parts.
Splines on the front end of the drive-shaft shaft slide in and out of the gearbox as the distance changes.
The alternator energies the battery through the circular movement of the engine crankshaft.
Current flows from the battery to the components being powered, and back to the battery through the ground attached to the car’s metal body. Gasoline combustion with oxygen creating high-temperature and high-pressure gases that apply direct force to pistons, turbine blades and nozzles. Our master technicians utilize the latest automotive technology to handle all major and minor engine repair jobs.
The exhaust pipes and components are used to guide and clean burnt gases made by the combustion reaction away from the engine. The exhaust manifold collects burned exhaust gases from multiple cylinders in the engine into one pipe. It is an emissions control device that is part of the exhaust system that converts toxic pollutants by up to 90 percent to less toxic gases. Cars have a minimum of two O2 sensors that measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system to ensure that proper air to gas ratio. Resonators do not quiet the exhaust, they only eliminate certain frequencies that sound harsh. Mufflers use a series of perforated tubes or baffled chambers designed to dissipate the energy and quiet the noise.
It is the end of the exhaust usually made of steel, stainless steel or aluminum tubing by which the gasses are discharged.
There are five main filters in a car; Cabin Filter, Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Engine Oil Filter and Transmission Filter.
When a cars combustion engine is on, air is circulated for better gasoline combustion, air filters protect engines by collecting and trapping particles in ridges, preventing these particles from entering the engine. Engines need motor oil for lubrication for the many moving pieces such as; valves, cylinder walls, pistons, camshaft, connecting rod and crankshaft bearings.
And since all of our services come with guaranteed warranty coverage, there's no need to worry about encountering the same problems after you leave. Take a look at our wide selection of extended coverage plans, which can protect your automatic transmission up to the life of your vehicle!
Lets you figure out what the code is, see if you can fix it yourself, and lets you be prepared when you go to the garage. We may have issues, but at least we have something solid to build on, and the opportunity to do things slowly and well.
While increases in repair costs might cause consumers to postpone vehicle repairs, doing so is a bad idea.

If you notice the check engine light going on and off, try tightening or even replacing the gas cap. The sensor sends messages back to the engine to adjust the mix of oxygen and fuel being used.
A more costly repair because of the precious metals used in its construction, replacing catalytic converters represented just 6.1% of repairs in 2013.
Having it replaced by your mechanic will cost an average of $423.00 but will make it up to you in savings at the pump.
After the Inspection, our experienced mechanics will discuss your brake repair options starting at $99.95. After retrieving the Fault Code from the OBDII, our experienced mechanics will discuss your diagnostic and repair options free of charge. The service engine light comes on in your vehicle because the computer has diagnosed that something ain’t quite right. When your on-board computer detects a problem, it outputs a code through the output, and the code can be read by an OBD-II code scanner, or reader. The store can also reset the computer so that if the problem persists, the light will come on again.
My business is in the Small town of Williston Florida, we put out 25-30 cars a day and do no advertising, it all word of mouth.
A good early 2000’s Honda civic or Toyota corolla has a low value and low repair cost and are usually owned by adults.
A couple weeks ago I tried to get it inspected because inspection is due now and Mechanic tells me that my engine light should be on.
The dealership claimed that they knew what the issue was after me paying that much for extensive diagnostics.
We offer a variety of AC services including FREE quick checkup, AC leak test, AC charge and full AC flush. The condenser is a coolant radiator where the coolant is refrigerated to a liquid and access water is extracted.
This rotation winds a coil made of an iron core and copper winding on a rotor to generates electrical power. Depending on the make and model, the axle is either mounted to a bearing at its base of the transmission and rotates with the wheel or the tire is mounted to a baring on the axle and rotates around the axle. Fortunately, our mechanics can easily check your ball joints for excessive wear or seal cracks before you experience severe steering or suspension problems.
This technology has a life cycle of three to five years as the lead plates deteriorate over time from the constant charging and discharging, breaking down the lead molecules. If the charging voltage is less than 13.0 volts, the alternator is not putting out enough voltage to keep the battery charged.
We will also place a protector pad around the posts to help protect against future corrosion. Advanced Auto Repair technicians inspect the condition of battery cables and terminals, compromised battery cables or terminals can reduce the current traveling to the starter. Common problems for a failing CAT are; overheating, matrix contamination, or a clogged CAT.
The flywheel connects to the engine, and the clutch plate connects to the transmission shaft.
Some manufactures replace the control arm with a wishbone or use them in combination using the control arm as an upper link instead of a lower link of a suspension.
Fins attached to the core tubes increase surface for heat to transfer to air that is forced past them,  forced by a fan. It consists of a chamber filled with way and a rod which is pressed against it, when the coolant reaches 180 degrees the wax begins to melt causing a thermal expansion of the wax, which in turn pushes the rod allowing the coolant to flow outside. The coolant than flows downwards in the radiator flow tubes where it loses its heat to air flowing past the tubes, for a better cooling effect, the heat transfer area is further increased by providing fins on the flow tubes. To avoid this, the radiator pressure cap (pressure regulating valve )opens when the pressure in the system increases beyond the recommended value, allowing the high pressurized coolant to flow into the coolant overflow tank. Once the radiator cools down, the coolant in the overflow tank gets sucked back into the radiator.
Blades spin rapidly to provide cooler air from the outside and passes it through the radiator increasing heat transfer. The upper radiator hose is the return line where hot coolant flows through the thermostat back the upper radiator tank to be cooled. Our professional technicians can diagnose your cars cooling system for leaks, overheating, blockage and other issue, and perform repairs, quickly and efficiently for a nice smooth ride at competitive affordable prices. This leads to longer tire and suspension life, more responsive steering and improves gas mileage.
Four Wheel Drive vehicles only have two differentials, between each set of drive wheels, the front and back are locked together so that the front and rear wheels have to turn at the same speed. Universal joints, jaw couplings, or rag joints at each end of the driveshaft allow the propeller shaft to be flexible, while constantly transmitting power. Most small to regular sized cars have a 12 volt battery and larger vehicles have a 24 volt battery. The pressure that moves these engine components transforms chemical energy to mechanical energy. We understand that car engine are a major investment, with countless moving parts, engine repairs are sometimes necessary.
A typical car exhaust consists of and exhaust manifold, down pipe, flex pipe, catalytic converter, O2 sensor, resonator, muffler and a tail pipe.
Depending on the engine and type of vehicle, the manifold is either a cast iron manifold assembly or a set of pipes. The catalytic converter uses a catalyst in the form of platinum and palladium coated by a ceramic honeycomb or ceramic beads to create a chemical reaction converting Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Oxides into Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, Oxygen and water. The upstream oxygen sensor usually located on the exhaust manifold measures how rich or lean exhaust gases are they exit the combustion chamber.
In sports and performance exhausts, a resonator can make the exhaust note louder and more aggressive. Noise comes into the muffler, the sound waves bounce against the baffles, creating opposite sound waves that cancel each other out. In a dual exhaust system Y pipes are used with balance pipes to equalize the exhaust pulses. Our professional technicians can diagnose your cars exhaust leaks, noise and issue, and perform repairs, quickly and efficiently for a nice smooth ride at competitive affordable prices. The next time your on a dusty road, remember that it’s you cabin air filter that keeps the car cabin clean. Some car manufactures build filters that last the life of a car, for improved gas mileage, most fuel filters should be changed every 12,000 miles. The low average repair costs show that simply tightening the cap usually solves the problem.
A faulty O2 sensor will result in reduced fuel economy and can take a toll on the catalytic convertor. I am a single mom with no money , and I told the guy that, I was like please this is all I have , and if there are things about this car please let me know, oh he swore it is beautiful, your going to love it.
A 90s sedan or SUV would have been far more cost effective to maintain and would have been something that could have been easily modified to fit different tastes.
For something like a check engine light, the proper diagnostics must be run to be 100% sure what is wrong. Then I paid another $90, was called to go pick my car, was told it was fixed, got half way home and the light came back on, took my car to a mom and pop service place the next day, was told it was simply a fuse needing to be replaced, replace it and bam no more problem. In the final process the refrigerant enters the evaporator coil as a cold, low-pressure liquid. Advanced Auto Repair offers a complete line of Interstate car and truck batteries as well as battery instillation and battery replacement in North Attleboro. Before instillation we’ll test the new battery and afterward well test the starting and charging system components for proper charge. Replacing a car’s battery cables is an inexpensive fix and can preserve the life of the battery, alternator and starter.
In an air cooled engine, a fan blows air through a duct that runs around the fins of the block and cylinder head.
The radiator fan is actuated by a thermostatic switch once the coolant flows outside the thermostat. Pickups, vans and SUVs are equipped with a larger cooler because of the extra weight strain put on transmissions.
In addition there is the coolant overflow lines that run to the reservoir tank and the transmission cooler lines. When a car is off, the battery will retains that electrical current to power the starter, ignition and fuel systems, which are responsible for creating the combustion necessary for the engine to function. That is why we recommend regular checkups and getting small repairs done before they become big investments. Over time, the constant expansion and contraction of the manifold caused by heating and cooling can cause cracks or leaks. Flex pipes are an essential part of the exhaust system on front and all wheel drive vehicle, when a car accelerate the motor rocks and the flex pipe flexes, protecting the exhaust system from cracking.
The downstream oxygen sensors located behind the catalytic converter measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gases leaving the catalytic converter. Some mufflers also use fiberglass insulation that absorbs the sound energy as the exhaust gases flow through.
Engine Oil Filters trap and remove these small metal particles from the circulating motor oil.
Replacing the O2 sensor will protect critical engine systems and keep your vehicle running at peak fuel efficiency. The cost to replace spark plugs varies significantly based on the type of car you have and where you take your car.  Cars have differing numbers of spark plugs and the accessibility of the spark plugs will affect the labor rate as some cars may be designed in a way that makes the spark plugs harder to reach. When you take your car in to get it checked out, the mechanic hooks up a little diagnostic computer to your vehicle’s computer. The auto part stores carry these to cater to DIY’ers in hopes that they, in turn, buy the auto parts at their store to make the fix on their own. There was a rattle under the car I told him about right away, so he give 30 warranties and make an appointment like for the following week after I bought it it was like 8 days later, he did that for a reason didn’t he?
Then I took it to the Chrysler dealership to have it checked and they found black tape covering the engine light!!I was in disbelief, I am livid that they would do something like that!!So when it comes down to it what car someone choose to buy is really their business but when someone does something illegal like that, that’s when it becomes a Criminal Offense.

I am NOT taking it lightly that someone did this to me I have went to the bank that finance my vehicle,I sent messages to the Better Business Bureau,I’ve called the Action News Jason Stougenke to blow the whistle and I’m reporting it to the DMV he will not get away with this!!!! I know it’s been a long time since this happened to you but it really touch my heart to see how people can judge you about what kind of car you bought but if they had READ FULL STATEMENT of what you had said they would have seen this was not so cut and dry!!
