The simplest way to install Windows 10 OS on your laptop, tablet, or other PC is to upgrade your existing Windows 7 or 8.1 using an upgrade process via Windows Update service. In this post, we’ll describe how to perform a clean Windows 10 installation using a bootable USB Flash drive. Before hitting the power button to turn on your PC, make sure the Flash drive is inserted in one of USB ports and that booting via USB is enabled in BIOS settings of your machine.
To continue the installation after the restart, your USB Flash drive will have to be disconnected from the PC. The setup asked us again for the product key and we skipped the step again by clicking the “Do this later” link. On the “Let’s get connected” step, you can setup a Wi-Fi connection or leave it for later by clicking “Skip this step” link. After that, the setup gives you a “Get going fast” screen with a choice to personalize your Windows 10, such as setting up input, location, and Internet security preferences. The following step allows you to either log-in with your existing Microsoft Account email and password, create a new Microsoft Account, or skip the step.
Also, you can set a PIN and use it instead of a password under Windows 10, but we didn’t want to make the Windows 10 installation longer, so we skipped the step. Finally, the log-in screen appeared and we logged into Windows 10 using a personal Microsoft Account email and password. This will show you how to boot from a CD or DVD in an existing virtual machine, including XP Mode, created in Windows Virtual PC. Setting the integrated features to be enable or disabled from within the VM only affects that current session. After I reset a password (my whole reason to this was to crack the password I forgot last year sometime), I shut the machine down, turned integration back on and set the keyboard back, and its working fine. Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot and press Enter key, then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disabled. Using PCUnlocker boot CD you can also reset lost Windows 8 password on other models of HP laptop, desktop and tablet PCs, including HP ENVY Sleekbook, HP Spectre XT Ultrabook and HP ElitePad 900 G1 Tablet.
When the PC starts, the firmware interface controls the booting process of the PC, and then passes control to Windows or another operating system.
UEFI is a replacement for the older BIOS firmware interface and the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) 1.10 specifications. This tutorial will show you how to see if your Windows is booted in UEFI or legacy BIOS (CSM) mode in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.
Looking through your manual and drivers at the HP site, I only see mention of BIOS and no UEFI. You could still use Rufus to create a Windows 8.1 installation USB flash drive, but you would need to do so without using the GPT for UEFI option, you would use MBR for BIOS.
Recommended if running only business apps (Office, etc.) or if battery life is important, and you don’t need to use external displays or projectors.
Recommended if you use graphics rich applications, battery life isn’t critical, and need to drive at most only two displays at a time. Recommended if you use both business apps (Office) and graphics rich apps regularly and want to optimize battery life, or if you need to drive three displays simultaneously.
Open the “NVIDIA Control Panel” by right clicking on your windows desktop, and from the pop-up menu, selecting “NVIDIA Control Panel”. In the “Set Up Multiple Displays” panel on the right, look at the list displays shown below “1.
Once Windows has booted and you have logged in successfully, reset BitLocker by once again going into the Windows control panel, and selecting “BitLocker Drive Encryption”, then next to the system drive select “Suspend Protection” and answer “Yes” to the prompt, then immediately next to the system drive click “Resume Protection”.
This has finally solved the mystery of not being able to duplicate monitors when using projectors. Oh, and make sure you download the latest Win8 driver for NVidia Quadro 2000M from NVidia’s web site before you try the above.
The beauty of this is that the NVidia’s CPL can see and control both the NVidia-attached monitors, as well as the Intel-driven laptop LCD screen. I’m not sure if the hardware is the same chips, but that doesn’t matter as I can duplicate the display now!
Anyhow, whenever I return from vacation and swap the corporate drive back in Windows will not boot stating that the startup information has changed. They never give me a hard time about it and I explained what I am doing and no one seems to have a problem with it - but it is getting annoying to not be able to swap between the drives whenever I want. Does anyone have any idea what switching between two hard drives, and not changing any other settings, could be doing to the computer, bios, or whatever else Bitlocker looks at to make it do this? More importantly, is there a way for me to figure out what is being changed and change it back myself so that I can boot back to my corporate drive without needing make a call to the help desk every time?
The Laptop is a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420 if the nature of the hardware has anything to do with it. Changing the BIOS, UEFI firmware, master boot record, boot sector, boot manager, option ROM, or other early boot components or boot configuration data.
This functionality is by design; BitLocker treats unauthorized modification of any of the early boot components as a potential attack and will place the system into recovery mode. Also read the 30-odd points under What causes BitLocker to start into recovery mode when attempting to start the operating system drive? Now obviously turning off BitLocker completely and decrypting the work drive is not a possibility in this scenario.
Can I swap hard disks on the same computer if BitLocker is enabled on the operating system drive? Yes, you can swap multiple hard disks on the same computer if BitLocker is enabled, but only if the hard disks were BitLocker-protected on the same computer.
So if at all it's possible I guess you can encrypt your home drive on the same system, and then you'll be able to swap the drives easily.

If the above is not an option, then the following might work, but I'm pretty sure admin access is required for this.
By completing this procedure, you have suspended BitLocker protection on the drive by changing the decryption key to a clear key. I guess the TPM itself records the change, and I doubt you can (or are officially allowed to) disable it. Not the answer you're looking for?Browse other questions tagged windows-vista bitlocker .
Are there any design patterns that are possible only in dynamically typed languages like Python? If your computer ever crashes and has problems booting, you'll have to either get someone to help your recover your files or have to format the whole hard drive. Through Windows 8 and 10 you’ll be able to create a recovery drive or repair disc, which will allow you to restore your Windows operating system to a working state with ease.
As a word of warning: both methods are made for their respective computing architectures, meaning a 64-bit backup cannot be used on a 32-bit restore and vice versa. Upon launching the recovery drive tool, you’ll be presented with the option of having your system files also backed up. After continuing with the on-screen prompts Windows will prepare and then create the recovery drive for you, which normally takes around 10-20 minutes for the whole process to complete. If you’re on Windows 7 or prefer to use a disc rather than a flash drive on Windows 8 and 10, then you can create yourself a repair disc. If you are every unlucky and have trouble booting into Windows, you’ll need to use your recovery drive or disc by booting directly to it.
Once you’ve launched the process, Windows will attempt to recover your previously working and backed up operating system. Download and install the free EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition to repartition your Windows 8 or 7 hard disk. EaseUS Partition Master will do the changes and partition F is created to install Windows 10. After creating the new partition, it's time for the easy part: Installing Windows 10 on your new partition. After a few times of restart in the process, eventually you'll be prompted to set up your account, enter your license key, and set up Windows. Moreover, EaseUS Partition Master Free now can help you to dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 7.
Entering BIOS and changing its settings differs depending on a PC model, but it is similar on all computers. If you’re installing Windows 10 on a PC which has a legal copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 installed, you can skip this step by clicking the “Skip” link. In this case, we created a new hard drive partition on unallocated space and directed the setup to put Windows 10 on it. Since the same settings can be accessed later once Windows 10 is up and running, we used “Express settings” option. We advise you to get an account if you don’t already have one, since it enables access to Windows store and many other important features of Windows 10. Windows 10 was automatically activated and ready to go right away, with no action required on our end.

In the left pane select Integration Features, then make sure that the Enable at startup box in the right pane is unchecked. While the virtual machine is starting, tap the Delete key every second until you see the virtual BIOS Setup Utility screen. Using the arrow keys, select the Boot menu bar item, then select Boot Device Priority and press enter.
Select 1st Boot Device and press enter to change it to have CDROM listed as the 1st Boot Device and Hard Drive as the 2nd Boot Device. When you see the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message, press a key (ex: spacebar) to boot from the ISO made from the CD or DVD. When you are finished, you can select (dot) None in step 3 above to stop having the option to boot from the ISO.
It needs to be done from the VM settings in step 4 before the VM is opened to be able to boot to the BIOS in the VM. Every time I boot up the virtual pc (XP Mode), I tap the DELETE button like a mad man, but to no avail. Got into the BIOS, set the CDROM to boot first, closed the BIOS and rebooted to the ISO I wanted. I changed the administrator password a week ago and now have totally forgotten the password. To reset your lost password, you need to create a PCUnlocker boot CD on another PC you have access to. Immediately press the Esc key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens. Next use the right arrow key to choose the System Configuration menu, use the down arrow key to select Boot Options, then press Enter. PCUnlocker will automatically analyze your Windows 8 SAM registry hive and then display a list of local user accounts on your HP Pavilion g7 laptop. The program will reset its password and unlock the user account if it is already disabled, locked out or expired.
If your Windows disk shows having an EFI partition like below, then it's installed with UEFI.

In the right pane of System Summary in System Information, see if the BIOS Mode value says Legacy or UEFI.
With the setupact.log file opened in Notepad, click on Edit (Menu bar) and Find, or press the Ctrl+F keys.
This command returns 0x1 if the PC boots in Legacy BIOS mode, or 0x2 if the PC boots in UEFI mode. In my case, I do a lot of presentations and use the default Nvidia but the duplicate display issues does not happen all the time. I also got the three monitor scenario to work after installing Windows 8 (Win8) on this laptop. Authorized administrators can update boot components without entering recovery mode by disabling BitLocker beforehand. The BitLocker keys are unique to the TPM and operating system drive, so if you want to prepare a backup operating system or data drive for use in case of disk failure, you need to make sure that they were matched with the correct TPM. In order to save yourself the headache, create yourself a recovery disc or drive which will allow you to restore your Windows 8 or 10 install with ease.
Once the process is complete you’ll be presented with a prompt to rename your disc with a label. You can do this directly through the BIOS (see our guide on how to enter the BIOS) or wait for Windows 8 or 10 to automatically bring up the advanced startup menu. Insert your Windows 10 installation DVD and reboot your computer (you'll need to have enabled booting from your DVD drive in your system BIOS).
Choosing the wrong partition could mean wiping your other Windows installation altogether, so make sure you pick the new partition created for Windows 10 installation in the first step. You should now have a new entry for Windows 10 on your boot screen when you first start up your computer.
From here, you can choose the Windows operating system you want to boot by default and control how long the operating system selection will appear before it automatically boots the default Windows version. Therefore, EaseUS Partition Master software is your good helper no matter you want to dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 7 or dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 7. A clean install is a must if you’re running any operating system such as Windows XP or Vista or you have a laptop with no OS. Once you have a Flash drive with Windows 10 setup on it, you have to boot your computer with it. For instance, on our old Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop we used for this how-to guide, you enter BIOS by holding the F1 keyboard key right after power on. After you’re done click the “Next” button in lower right corner and after that “Install now” button. If you don’t have Windows 7 or 8.1, in the field you have to enter your Windows 10 key, which you bought.
If you haven’t managed to pull the drive out before booting from it started, just pull it out and restart the computer. These are not possible if you use a local account, which can be created after you click the skip link on the “Make it yours” step.
We also provide an extensive Windows 7 tutorial section that covers a wide range of tips and tricks.
Next you have to turn off the Secure Boot option in BIOS in order to get your HP Pavilion g7 to boot from the CD.
The first method involves using the “NVIDIA Control Panel” to manage your displays rather than the Windows 7 “Windows – P” key combination, or the regular Windows 7 “Screen Resolution” control panel. You can also configure different hard drives for different operating systems and then enable BitLocker on each one with different authentication methods (such as one with TPM-only and one with TPM+PIN) without any conflicts. When BitLocker is suspended, TPM validation does not occur and other authentication methods, such as the use of a PIN or USB key to unlock the operating system drive, are not enforced. By storing this key unencrypted, the Suspend option allows for changes or upgrades to the computer without the time and cost of decrypting and re-encrypting the entire drive.
The major difference here is that you’ll need 8GB USB drive for a system file recovery as opposed to a much smaller 512mb drive for the regular back up. You've now got all the tools necessary to dual-boot Windows 10 and Windows 8 or 7, or even to triple-boot Windows 10, 8, and 7.
In that case, you’ll have to pay for Windows 10 activation, whereas for owners of Windows 7 and 8.1 machines activation is free of charge. After the restart and boot from the built-in hard drive, we were presented with a boot menu. In this tutorial we’ll walk you through how to unlock HP Pavilion g7 laptop using a PCUnlocker boot CD, in case your Windows 8 password is lost or forgotten. After the changes are made and BitLocker is again enabled, BitLocker will reseal the encryption key to the new values of the measured components that changed as a part of the upgrade, the volume master key is changed, the protectors are updated to match and the clear key is erased. In BIOS settings of the ThinkPad there’s a Startup section with option to set boot priority order. Since our ThinkPad X200 laptop had Windows 7 Professional, we skipped the product key screen. With PCUnlocker boot CD you can reset your Windows 8 password and get right into your HP laptop.
This way the NVidia chipset will drive the two external monitors, and the Intel chipset will drive the laptop’s built-in LCD screen. After we had successfully installed Windows 10, the new OS automatically recognized it is installed on an eligible Windows 7 PC and activated itself.
