A recent study looked at AHCC as a potential natural treatment for HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and it is so common that nearly all sexually-active men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV and that about 14 million people become newly infected each year.
Further, the two most common types of cervical cancer worldwide, squamous cell carcinoma followed by adenocarcinoma, are both caused by HPV.
Within those 40 "high risk" strains two specific strains—HPV-16 and HPV-18—account for about 70% of cervical cancers. AHCC has been shown to naturally boost the immune system by turning up the dial on the immune system and increasing the number of several types of white blood cells (including Natural Killer Cells, macrophages, dendritic cells and T Cells). The study looked at two different possible methods of using AHCC as an alternative treatment to HPV and compared these with a control (animals that did not receive AHCC). The first method involved in vitro treatment with a single dose of AHCC for a 72-hour incubation period. The second method involved continuous in vitro exposure with daily treatments for 90 days; in this case expression of HPV was eradicated with no detection of HPV expression even after 30 days off treatment. Additional studies will be needed to test AHCC as an effective treatment for HPV—however a confirmatory pilot study in HPV positive women is currently underway. Currently the CDC website states that there is no existing treatment for the HPV virus itself; instead, treatments exist for the individual health problems HPV can cause.
Cervical Cancer and other HPV-related cancers, as with most types of cancer, are most treatable when they are diagnosed and treated early.

Smith and her colleagues administered oral doses of AHCC to ten women once a day for period of six months. Evidence has shown that AHCC, a nutritional supplement available at your local vitamin store, can increase either the number or the activity of Natural Killer cells, such as dendritic cells and cytokines, which aid the body in fighting of infection and blocking tumor growth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV is so common that almost all sexually active men and women are infected at some point in their lives.
Researchers say that an extract from shiitake mushrooms - AHCC - may have potential to eradicate HPV. HPV is also accountable for around 95% of anal cancers, 65% of vaginal cancers, 60% of oropharyngeal cancers, 50% of vulvar cancers and 35% of penile cancers. Although there are two HPV vaccines available to help prevent women from becoming infected, Smith and colleagues note there are no effective treatments for the virus.
As such, the team set out to assess the effects of active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) against HPV. AHCC is already available as a nutritional supplement, hailed for its immune-boosting properties.
To reach their findings, Smith and colleagues enrolled 10 women to their study who had tested positive for HPV infection.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost all men and women contract HPV at some point in their lives, but many are unaware of it.
Earlier this year, Medical News Today reported on a study claiming that two thirds of healthy American adults may be infected with one or more of 109 HPV strains. It was those two strains tested in the study that showed that AHCC could potentially be a natural treatment to HPV.

AHCC successfully suppressed HPV expression in the first 24 hours, however HPV expression recovered by the 48 hour mark.
After stopping AHCC supplementation, five of the women achieved a negative HPV test result. Similar research has also acknowledged AHCC as an effective treatment method for the flu, liver damage, and cancer prevention. HPV often goes away on its own; however, when it does not go away it can lead to health complications, including genital warts and cancer. The virus is the main cause of cervical cancer in women, with two types - HPV 16 and HPV 18 - accounting for around 70% of all cases. AHCC is a substance produced by the shiitake mushroom, also called the Japanese mushroom, native to Asia.
Among three of the participants, it was confirmed that HPV had been completely eradicated after AHCC use had ceased. A recent study conducted at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School has revealed that active hexose correlated compound (AHCC), extract from a Japanese mushroom, could effectively treat HPV. While there is currently no cure or supplement for HPV, there are treatment options for problems associated with HPV, including genital warts, abnormal cervical cells, related cancers, and Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP).
