Use Rsync for Cross-Brand NAS Backups
Following our previous guide on how to use SMB to transfer data to and from competing NAS brands and ASUSTOR NAS devices, this time we show you how to use Rsync for also performing data backups between competing NAS brands and ASUSTOR NAS devices.
ASUSTOR NAS offers a complete Rsync backup solution, supporting bi-directional transfer, encrypted connections, scheduling, and incremental backups. This is ideal for remote, cross-brand data transfers. Whether you're backing up data from a remote NAS to ASUSTOR NAS, or syncing local data to an off-site backup server, Rsync gets the job done securely and efficiently.
Step-by-Step Setup
1. Go to Services > Rsync Server and check Enable Rsync Server. |
2. Open Backup & Restore > Remote Sync and click Create.
3. When the backup wizard opens, select the option to pull data from another Rsync-compatible server to ASUSTOR NAS.
4. Enter the IP address, username, and password of the backup source. Then click Next.
o Optional: Check Enable encrypted transmission to use SSH encryption for secure data transfer.
5. Choose the backup mode:
o Multiple-to-One: Backup multiple folders into a single destination folder
o One-to-One: Mirror source and destination folder contents
6. Select the folders or files to back up, then click Next.
7. Choose the destination folder on the ASUSTOR NAS, then click Next.
8. Set a backup schedule and name the backup task.
o Optional backup options: Enable incremental backup, compression, or metadata preservation
9. After confirming the settings, the new task will appear in the Remote Sync task list.
