Instinct: Canines with herding backgrounds are notorious for nipping at the heels of other dogs, sheep, horses and even people. Australian Shepherds, for example, are known for exhibiting ankle- and heel-nipping behavior, which can show up in puppyhood. The behavior is usually brought on by fast movements or walking away from a dog with your back facing him. Ed Frawley discusses two different ways to break up a dog fight whether you're alone or with someone.
I assume you read the article I wrote on HOW TO BREAK UP A DOG FIGHT WITHOUT GETTING HURT. I need to say that if we had these dogs (and we have 4 house dogs), we would manage the dogs differently so these fights never happened.
I just read your article in breaking up a dog fight, and thought id send you these two pics.
I just wanted to let you know how helpful your website has been to me over the past few months, and share with you a few photos of what happened to me when I broke up a fight. The initial meeting of the dogs was done at the rescue facility, with their trainers on hand.
About a month into the newly integrated pack, we were comfortable enough with the dogs' behavior toward each other that we took the leashes off in the house, and allowed them to just be in collars. The dogs have been buddies since except for 2 minor squabbles that I was able to diffuse almost immediately.
It wasn't until afterwards that I was told by my children that the dog repeatedly bit the children in the home, another neighbor child and my son at one point!
Here is a picture of a dog bite received while trying to break up a fight between my two beloved dogs, 85lbs & 65lbs.
Hi Cindy, I wanted to make a contribution to the dog bite photo, I know there was an email address set for that specifically but I couldn't find it, only that this is not a domestic one, it's a sport dog bite. I am some pretty severe dog bites after trying to break up a fight between two males the other night if you're interested. Puppy biting is a normal behavior and generally goes away with time as they grow and understand it while living with their owners. Biting behavior is temporary in most cases, and generally puppies overcome it by the time they enter into their adulthood. Therefore, when they have nothing to do, they get bored and want to play with their owner, and when they play they will obviously remember the games they used to play with their little sisters and brothers and that is fighting, scratching, digging and ultimately biting. Generally a puppy learns that biting is bad when he bites another puppy too hard while playing, and the one that has bitten yells and stops playing with him.
There are many effective training methods an owner can use to stop the biting habit of a Border Collie. Never leave the dog for more hours than months of age (2 months old = 2 hours; 3 months old = 3 hours) and never longer than 10-11 hours, max at any age.
Once the dog is calm and cool, you can bend down and gently stroke and greet your dog in a low, gentle tone of voice. If it yours does not go on a collar, place it in a spot where your dog tends to bark a lot, such as near the front door, or keep it on your person at all times. If you use a head harness, you'll also have greater control over your dog's unruly ankle-attacking behavior.

I know this is not the same situation but the majority of it will still apply to your dog. After finding your site on how to break up a dog fight I saw you were looking photos of the bite so here is mine. I thought I should share with you a couple bites I have occured during my ordeals with my two dogs.
They are so cute and adorable, you just can’t stop playing with them, and when you play with your puppy he gets over-enthusiastic and hyper active and then starts biting you. As much as you might love adoring and play with your puppy, their biting and nipping can make it irritating and ruin your fun. However, as an owner you have to be proactive and train your puppy to help him understand that biting is not the right behavior, otherwise your dog may keep this habit throughout their life, which can be a big problem because it won’t be easy to train an adult dog. That means more trouble for the new owner, because he will keep biting while playing with him.
Given below are few of them that have worked for my BC; however you can use them combined with your own ways for more effective and fast results. As aforementioned stop playing with your puppy the moment he bites you, and act as if it hurts you by making whining or yelping like noise. Make sure you avoid playing aggressive games with your Collie such as fighting, because they love it and make them excited and hyper active.
If you have kids, other family members or friends, take their help to do the same whenever they play with your puppy.
Positive reinforcement is very important because it motivates Border Collies to learn in a positive environment, therefore always praise your puppy when he stops biting you.
Walk calmly with your dog to the place you want him to go, and just remain calm and allow him to run around for a few moments. If you’re letting your dog out first thing when she comes out of the kennel, then within 10 or 15 minutes after she eats, and finally, before you go to bed, she should be fine until morning. If your dog nips in excitement, that may be something you can deal with simply by following the above steps.
These can be found at most pet stores, and can be placed around the house or on your dog’s collar.
When your dog barks, it will send a harmless, high-pitched sound that humans are incapable of hearing. The only thing I can do to minimize the damage to humans and dogs is to have a good plan, and the right tools. I had two female pit bulls both around 4 years old at my house, one was my own dog the other was a friend's. We never expected the dog to get his head out because we didn't believe a) that he would fit and b) that he would even try it, the holes were only 15 cms big. Having said that, getting annoyed by his constant biting is not the only worrying thing, you may also end up with torn clothes filled with holes, because puppies love tearing and chewing clothes. Therefore, you better find a way to stop his biting habit and control it before it becomes a big mess to handle. First few times puppy won’t realize that why other one has stopped playing but after few times when that happens again, puppy will understand that biting is bad because it will stop the game, so he will stop doing that. However, there are simple techniques and methods that you can use to train your Border Collie puppy to stop biting.

Try to make him realize as if he has done something very bad that’s why you have stopped playing. Stay focused and be consistent with methods and techniques you’re using, because if you switch to different methods too soon, it will confuse your puppy and he may not learn it.
Your endeavors will be a lot more effective and it will also help him to learn faster that biting is not good and cannot be an acceptable behavior while playing. It will make him realize that stop biting is a good behavior and it will earn him praise from his owner. However, be warned – nipping is a sign of dog aggression and it should never be taken lightly. It is the dominant dog starting the fight and not linked to toys, food or me being present (fought without me). Those few seconds when the dog got to him nearly gave me a heart attack, when you can't see if the dog got to the flesh or if it's just the clothes, but it was a relief when the dog pulled and it only ripped the pants. You take them for a walk or to the park, the moment you start running he will start chasing and biting your ankles. Well, fortunately our children have lots of other activities to do where they can engage their mind, but for Border Collie Puppies the only activity they know is biting, chasing their owner, growling and barking excessively. Allowing your dog to fall into a routine around relieving herself will help her state of mind all the time – she knows you will take her out after dinner, for example, and will wait.
It is vital that you allow the dog to become calm and sedate before you acknowledge its presence. Although I thought I had driven home how she should treat dogs she did make a mistake but the largest problem was the negligence on the owners part. He does have the dog's fangs printed on his calf but it was a minimal injury compared to what it could have been.
These steps will make your puppy understand that biting won’t help him to play more, because it will end the fun for him.
You may look a bit silly if you do that in a park where others don’t know what you’re doing, but it will help your Border Collie immensely to become a well-behaved dog. When your dog realizes that calm behavior is rewarded by the attention he so craves, he will know better than to get all wound up.
This shows the dog that her behavior is not wanted by you, and that if she does it, she will be separated from you. If you weaken and praise or pet the dog while he is in this hyper state, you will set your progress back weeks, so do not do it. The male doodle always fights with my little terrier, then the female doodle jumps in, then my big dog jumps in to take the male doodle off the terrier. The difference is that the dog doesn’t understand how to modulate its behavior, and this often results in a hyper-excited state in which they yap incessantly and even nip or bite, jump on you, etc.
