When people bring a new puppy home they are often confronted by problems that were never expected.
To understand how to solve the problem of a biting puppy you must first understand why a pup is biting. When pups first move into a human environment it takes a period of time, usually a week or so for them to recognize their human family is now their new pack members. Puppies need to learn how to live with their new human pack members and it's the humans who need to educate them. Twenty five years ago I used to tell puppy owners to just grab the little buggers and shake them until they scream. If the pup lets go then you can praise it with a soft pat and “good boy.” Give him a food treat or a high value toy to play with. You can redirect the puppy by either tossing it a foot or two (not too far) or move it around in front of the pup in a manner that builds interest. Once you get a pup to redirect onto a toy you are on the road towards teaching that puppy that there are more interesting prey items than your hands and legs. Hyperactivity-Hypersensitivity Syndrome type aggression in young dogs and puppies is one of the most annoying behavioral problems since it commonly involves children. Puppies who where physically abused during the first three months of their life, usually end up with behavioral problems as adults. Here’s a few pointers to help you begin to decrease mouthing behaviour in your puppy and train appropriate interactions for adulthood. The first step in discouraging mouthing behaviour is to moderate your own behaviour to stop eliciting biting responses from puppies. Because puppies naturally enjoy mouthing, puppies should have plenty of outlets for mouthing, like toys. Another method you can try is, whenever a puppy mouths you, to provide a toy instead for them to bite. I only use this method for puppies that have persistently bitten despite the implementation of all other methods. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you have a puppy that is not biting and grows into an enjoyable dog for your household. With puppies, it can be more difficult because they’re still learning dog language and should be practising on their littermates. Puppies think they are playing with new friends and humans think the puppy is being aggressive. When puppies chase balls or run after sticks or bite your pant legs this is an example of prey drive not aggression. It's our job to show the puppy an alternative behavior that satisfies the puppies drives to bite. Just don’t over do the praise because this can often put the pup back into prey drive and the biting will start all over again. When the game of tug is done correctly it becomes a tool that can be used in obedience training or agility training or one of the biting sports. While the pouncing and biting are cute when he is small, as he grows the behavior can get obnoxious and even dangerous. Puppies require lots of exercise, and if they don't get enough, they will work out their excess energy by being rough and rowdy with you. This problem develops when a puppy has not been disciplined enough by its mother or an adult dog in the pack and lacks the bite control. However, using their mouths on people is inappropriate, and something we need to train puppies out of. This means that, if the puppy begins mouthing you remove your hands and stop paying attention to the puppy. This is a hard method to implement effectively, but it involves removing the puppy from your company. We basically want the puppy to think it was actually pretty sucky to bite your hand, and to reconsider it in the future. Our pup is much to old to still be chewing on us (18 mo!) but when we play with her, she always wants to start gnawing our hands.
If we can spend some time playing with dog, training it by teaching basic commands and others, we can easily stop dog from biting or being aggressive at other people.. The problem with this is this can often squishes the pups prey drive (which we use in training) and damage the bond between the dog and the owner.
So there are times a human screaming is enough to teach the pup that what they are doing is unacceptable. The toys I use to redirect the pup from biting me are not the same toys that I leave in the exercise-pen with him during the day.

As I said, dogs and puppies need to learn to SPIT OUT the toy when told to do so and they need to learn to bring the toy back to you when you throw it. Take charge of his behavior now to prevent him from developing habits that will be very challenging to change later. If your puppy is playing too rough, spend some time teaching him how you want to play so he learns that if he is too rough, he won't have any fun. Many puppies have an affinity for one type of toy over another, so if you haven't had any luck finding a toy your puppy enjoys, try something different.
Basic obedience work will teach your puppy to listen to you and improve his overall behavior. However, adults do this on a mild level too – for example, being patted on the head is moderately-exciting and can elicit biting in a puppy. I find puppies that have access to a dog to play with often do not bite people as much, just because they’ve already done all the fun biting games with their doggy friends, rather than people.
For this approach, each time that the puppy mouths your hand, you are then going to use your hand to make the mouthing experience unpleasant for the puppy, and hopefully the puppy will cease mouth. As he grows up, he won't understand your changing attitudes toward biting and chewing, so it is important not to allow any behavior now that you will not find acceptable in six or nine months. You cannot us a place like the puppy’s crate or outside, where you want the puppy to have positive associations.
You then slowly build up the level of excitement you exhibit and teach the puppy to not-mouth at each level. For a puppy that is highly attentive to hands and hand-focussed, removing all hands can be significantly punishing to curb the behaviour.
Personally, I’ve never had an issue with dogs biting people as a result of this method.
This worked pretty well, but I guess is most effective if the dog is chewing on a hand to begin, with rather than a pant leg!
