Let’s explore the reason why dogs may eat their poop.  While it is common knowledge that dogs do at times eat poop, the reasons for this behavior is not always well understood. If your dog is a new mother and eating the babies’ feces, she is simply following nature, and trying to hide any trace of the babies from predators. Unfortunately just the act of you picking up the poop to comply with “pooper-scooper” laws may be enough to make your dog become interested in his poop. These last two reasons are the hardest to overcome, but not impossible.  Some dogs eat the poop of more dominant dogs that are in their”territory”. Sometimes, you may need to revert to more stringent forms of making the poop less attractive. If your dog eats an unusual quantity of dirt, keep a close eye on him in case he did eat something he should not have and is experiencing signs of poisoning. If multiple dogs in a household are all eating dirt, it could be a sign of a deficiency in their diet. If multiple dogs are all eating dirt from the same location, however, it could be that there is something delicious in that dirt.
If your dog only eats dirt from a specific are of your yard, you can try treating the area with a taste deterrent like cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or a bitter apple spray (available at pet stores). If you see your dog approach the plants, tell him firmly to "sit." When he does, reward him with a small treat to reinforce the positive behavior.
Never use hot water, or add anything to the water that could hurt the dog or sting his eyes. Many dog owners are against using punishments of this nature, whereas others think it is justified if the behavior they are trying to stop could be harmful to the dog.

While this is very disgusting to humans, some dogs seem to think this is the normal way of taking care of business.
She does not want any animal to be able to smell the babies and then find them.  This is not an issue to worry about. Your dog watches another dog eat poop and his little doggy brain thinks “oh, that is what you do with that stuff”. Most commercial dog foods contain enough vitamins and minerals to keep a dog healthy, but some brands contain less minerals than others.
If you have cut back on your dog's food because he is overweight, consider a lower-calorie food that keeps him feeling full instead of less of his normal food. If you can't figure out the cause of your dog's dirt-eating, or suspect it may be a sign of a more serious problem, bring the dog in for a check-up. You can try calling your vet first to talk about the behavior and get some suggestions of things to try.
Increase the amount of attention you give your dog, and give him a selection of new and interesting toys to play with.

Intestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms can absorb nutrients your dog needs and cause anemia and intestinal distress, both of which can lead to dirt-eating. This is most likely a sign that your dog is interested in eating something in the dirt, and not the dirt itself. Carry a spray bottle filled with cool, clean water when you go on walks, and keep it nearby when your dog is in the yard.
These devices are triggered remotely so the dog does not associate the punishment with you personally. If you are unable to supervise your dog when he is outside and can't get him to stop eating dirt, you may need to keep him indoors while you are away. If your dog won't stop eating dirt and exhibits other signs of anxiety, first try adding more entertainment and removing any stressors from his life that you can. If your vet finds nothing physically wrong with your dog, and none of these at-home remedies are successful, an experienced trainer or animal behavior specialist may be able to help. He has started 32 articles, patrolled over 48,600 edits, and contributed to wikiHow code as an engineering intern. The trick for the owner is to try and figure out why your four legged friend is adding this most interesting treat to his or her diet. There are really cheap dog foods, and really expensive dog foods, but the real issue is finding a food that meets the food requirement of your particular dog.
But if you have a tiny dog, or one that is very active, you may want to feed them twice a day. Most veterinarians will request a stool sample to be brought in with the dog, when they go in for their yearly check. You need to stand back for a minute from the problem and analyze all the components.  If you are busy and can’t give your dog much attention, he will take what ever attention that you can give, even if it is negative. These are the dogs that want to be the leader and in fact may have challenged you to be the alpha.
In some cases, pica is caused by a mineral deficiency in your dog's diet or a parasite infestation. Check the label of your dog food and compare it to other brands to make sure it has similar amounts of minerals like iron and calcium. During an exam, the vet can check the dog's overall health, order lab work to rule out deficiencies and diseases, and look for signs of parasites.
This can lead to an nutritional imbalance and the dog eats dirt in an attempt to remedy this. Visible worms in your dog's feces are a definite sign he is infected, but other symptoms include diarrhea, low appetite, loss of energy, etc. Make sure to keep all houseplants out of reach, or he may still find a way to get his dirt fix indoors.
He also enjoys helping with administrative backlogs, writing, and working on content to improve readability, particularly in articles’ introductions. Generally speaking, a dog food that is mid range in price will provide all the nutrients that your dog needs.

For instance, if your dog should get two cups of food per day, give them 1 cup in the morning and then 1 in the evening. You are hollering and dancing around as you are grossed out about the puppy eating his poop, and the puppy is all excited about this new game. Give your pet a stern “no” when the behavior is bad, and then be sure to reward him for good behavior. Some dogs are just very territorial.  Start with the least difficult solution possible, which again is the stern “no” and then reward for good behavior.
Some folks have used pepper sauce on the poop, which makes it less desirable to eat, and masks the smell that has your dog’s attention.  If your dog is just content to urinate on the offending poop, that is acceptable behavior.
This being the case, a vet consultation is essential since the problem needs investigating and a solution found. He’s most proud of his work on How to Reduce Glare when Driving at Night, which has been featured and translated into 5 different languages. Try to establish a feeding routine that the dog gets used to, so they know food will be coming. He eats poop, you dance and provide entertainment that seems to be related to his new found skill. Your task is to then find ways to de-stress the situation or let your dog release tension in a more acceptable way. Just remember that initially as you are adding more fiber to the diet, you may have more poops to deal with initially. You will need to watch your dog closely to determine when he is eating dirt and try to figure out why. This is especially true in puppies and young dogs.[2] A dog may also eat dirt to alleviate intestinal distress caused by eating something he shouldn't have. Be sure to look for a food that addresses any special needs your dog might have (age, size, activity level, medical issues). He says that, in the wikiHow community, the fusion of friendly people with an ideology of knowledge philanthropy gives him a sense of belonging, a desire to stay connected and keep growing the project. An additional benefit from petting your dog is, it will lower your blood pressure and it just feels good!
Usually, a stern “No” and separation from the human part of the pack for a bit is enough discipline.
Pick up the poop, dispose of it without fuss, and then reward him for letting you handle the prize.
A stern “no” will let him know that you are not happy with his behavior, if he tries to get to the poop before you do.
