There are so many dog treats on the market it can sometimes be difficult to decide what are the best dog treats for training.
You may have heard someone refer to their dogs as their furry children before, and while we do have significant emotional attachments to our dogs, they are not the same as people.
You may have heard about clicker training, the fast-growing training trend that has reunited dog enthusiasts and trainers across the globe. The Alpha dog concept is a long passed down tradition in dog training, but it's not always fully understood and can often have a lot of myths and half-truths associated with it. It may seem like puppies leap from early puppyhood to doggy adolescence in the blink of an eye, but if you pay close attention, you may notice that growing doesn't happen all at once. There are several things to keep in mind that will help insure success in your dog training regimen.
Punishment and pain can also lead to an escalation of bad behavior and in some cases even aggression toward the owner. However, your dog has to be taught that the clicker means something, clicking alone is not reinforcing, you must teach your dog what the clicker means. Leash training, like most dog obedience training is less problematic if we can break it down into straight forward, manageable steps. Scheduling multiple training sessions throughout the day will help your dog learn more quickly because dogs like schedules and he will look forward with happy anticipation until you can go out again! Learn how to communicate with your hound by teaching him the meaning of "good dog" or using clicker training. To help your dog achieve self-control faster you can also try the above exercise when feeding him.Ask your dog to sit before you put the food bowl down. This exercise will prevent dog leash pulling by teaching him that staying close to you has its rewards! We will use the dog training method capturing. If your dog gets out of control and it is hard for you to even try the above exercises, read Dog Leash Training: Damage Control.Contact me if you have specific questions and contribute your tips below!Enjoy walks with your dog! Every time your dog looks away, say his name excitedly, shake the toy or treat, and say "Let's go!" (excitedly), treat him, and he will keep walking. If the dog gets ahead of you and starts to pull, take a few steps backwards (look behind you, first!) until the dog is moving back towards you again and is at your side.
If your dog is consistently pulling, you may want to try using a head halter; these work very well also if your dog is comfortable wearing it (it may need to be desensitized first). Remember that you need to give your dog enough slack in the leash that is loose when the dog is walking close to you.

Remember, do not use any harsh discipline like hitting, jerking on the leash or yelling when your dog doesn't follow. If choke chains are used correctly, they can be effective (though positive punishment and negative reinforcement) at teaching a dog to walk without pulling. If your dog is pulling on the leash, you’ll need to provide some guidance and training otherwise your dog will pull more and more.
You need to expect your dog to participate in the learning process, but you don’t want it to be so difficult for him that he can’t succeed. I believe all dog should be trained well enough to be walked on a buckle collar or harness alone, no dog training collar to over-use or rely on!
Skinner one of the leading researchers on reinforcement found that positive reinforcement is superior to punishment in altering behavior because positive reinforcement results in lasting behavioral modification and punishment changes behavior only temporarily and presents many detrimental side effects.
This is easy but it requires you to be patient and very consistent! You do not need treats for leash training your dog, the act of getting the leash on and going out will be the reward itself! If at any point while bending to place the bowl on the floor your dog stands up, start over.
The idea is to catch your hound doing the correct behavior, in this case walking nicely close to you.
You are going to play "Red Light, Green Light" to teach your dog to stop pulling on the leash and walk nicely. This will lure your dog into following you around and, it will teach him to hold his head high, since he will be looking at you and the treats.
At that time start walking forward again - the dog should be at your side and you should immediately praise and reward your dog.
If you hold the dog close to your side with a tight leash, it will be very difficult for the dog to learn to walk without pulling. Walking on a loose leash is challenging to teach but can be accomplished with the correct method. They are only effective if the dog is walking on one side of you (traditionally, on the left) and the chain must be placed on the dog's neck specifically for that side. If you just got a puppy or a new dog, it’s a good idea to start training polite leash walking from day one. These commands will be useful to work on dog leash training and they will make your walks in the park safer as well. Step 1: Have treats with you when going out for a walk, a treat pouch attached to your waist can be very useful.

Do not pull on the leash yourself!Step 2: Wait for your pet to look at you or loosen the tightness in the leash by walking towards you. If your dog doesn't follow, do step three again, and if he does, but then starts pulling again say a soft yet stern "No Max", and continue.
The best idea is to take your dog to the pet supply store and try on several harnesses until you find one that you are happy with, that fits your dog well, and that will serve the purpose well. Choke chains should never be used on puppies, and there is evidence to show that they can cause lasting, long-term damage to a dog's neck and trachea. If your pet starts getting wild, put it back in place and walk away.Wait until your pooch calms down, the moment he calms down grab the leash again.
In the beginning you will have to start by rewarding him for being farther than what you would like (never when the leash is stretched though!). Your pet will learn: self control, that walking next to you is rewarding and that pulling on the leash leads nowhere. If he gets crazy…you guessed it!…put the leash back and wait until he calms down again.Repeat the above steps until your dog gives up, gets too tired to jump anymore or learns that if he is sitting down the leash will get attached to his collar and you two will go outside. Because you will be competing against difficult distractions (other dogs, cats, squirrels, people, cars, etc). Read them all before you start! If your pet is completely out of control read our Damage Control article as well as Dog Walking Tips. Step 4: When your dog starts to come close to you more often, you can cut down the treats, only reward (randomly) a few of his approaches and ignore others. And you need patience, lots of it!Repeat this every time you go out with your dog and he will learn to sit before his leash is attached.
There are also front-clip harnesses where the leash attaches at the middle of the dog's chest that can greatly reduce pulling. Your furry friend needs to be able to explore, sniff around and be interested in things in general. Teach him to ask for permission to prevent sudden pulls to try to chase a squirrel in the park (or any other type of distraction).Never pull yourself on the leash. If you find yourself doing this, try putting the hand that holds the leash under your back.
