I was talking to my neighbor the other day about Lucy, our puggle dog and how she is chewing on practically everything these days.
I have two beagles (I call them my Demon Dogs), and they will get destructive when they get bored.
I have an Akita, definitely a completely different type of dog, but they are notorious for chewing destructively!
My friend has a lab that when she was a puppy had a bad habit of chewing on electrical cords so to stop this she put oil of cloves on the cords and the shewing stopped. And also, give her things in her kennel that it are ok for her to chew like you’ve been doing. I had the same problem with my beagle, and not to be discouraging, but with him, he was still chewing on all my beautiful shoes when he was five years old. I’m not too sure about the problem with chewing, but my little doggy had to have an overnight stay at the vet due to poisoning from chewing on a Sharpie. There is a spray you can get that tastes bad & is supposed to deter the dog from chewing. How stop labrador chewing , In article ’ll puppies chew, stop, stop labrador dog puppy chewing ..

If your dog is literally eating you out of house and home, it may seem that your only choice is to live with furniture from the thrift store and replace it as needed.  Not true!  Here are a couple of strategies to help you restore your sanity. The best way to stop inappropriate chewing is to provide plenty of things for the dog to gnaw on that are acceptable to you. For teething puppies, you might soak a washcloth and put it in the freezer for a few hours, then let the dog nibble on it to soothe his or her sore gums. For dogs of any age, a variety of chew toys will be appreciated.  Having a choice of toys keeps your dog from getting bored, and some chew toys even stimulate the dog to think.

Squeaky toys give your dog the excitement of chewing on something that makes a prey-like noise, while avoiding injuries from clawing and sometimes stinky wild animals. The joys of having a dog are endless — loyal companionship, unconditional love and a warm snuggle buddy on cold evenings. Older dogs benefit from toys like Kongs, hard rubber balls and bones that can’t be broken into pieces.
Most of the time, they are super-duper lazy, but since they are hunting dogs they can get pent up energy. Dogs need a lot of walking and long walks will give the dog the interaction it craves to set those destructive tendencies aside.
Wild dogs mouth as a way to get food from older dogs and of course to play, but it can sure become a bad habit in a hurry, so be patient, and consistant. One thing that I would add is the fact that no dog should be left alone with any toys or treats that could possibly present a choking or other health hazard. If you catch your puppy chewing something he shouldn’t, immediately give him something suitable to chew after correcting him. Rotate these toys so your dog doesn’t get bored with them and look for something more exciting to chew. If you have terry cloth pillows, for example, don’t give your dog a terry cloth stuffed animal.
These same endorphins are released during chewing, so his problem may stem from a lack of exercise. Despite regular exercise, a varied menu of toys and corrections when he’s caught, your dog may continue to gnaw at the ends of your table or the hems of your curtains. For example, last week one of them figured out how to push a bench next to the kitchen counter, hop up on it, and steal a 3 lb bag of apples. We tried EVERYTHING with our dog: sour apple spray, chew toys, a muzzle, confining him to one room… everything!

That has stopped all chewing, herding and food possessiveness in our dog – within just two weeks! I know it’s tempting but even the most durable dog toys and chews can be destroyed and without a human being there to take it away the dog could choke on it. Few things are more frustrating than coming home to a shredded pillow or Roman blinds ripped from the wall. If he’ll be left alone for several hours, take him for a long walk or play a 30-minute game of fetch before you leave. The instructor at puppy school told me that they grow out of their chewing stage at around 7 months old–give or take a month. You can get it at most pet stores, it wont harm them, they could even eat it if they wanted (tastes horrible, I tried it).
Also, we were taught by our trainer not to give any attention to the chewing or destructive behavior, because dogs often cant differentiate between negative or positive behavior. If he seems undeterred by the flavor on your furniture, spray one shot right on his tongue. But, during that first year on top of the sidng debaucle he also pulled all the wiring out for the truck hitch and got bored again and while chasing a cat under the other truck pulled more wires out from that to the tune of 700 bucks in repair. Thank goodness the husband was overseas during this phase cause I think he may have been someone else’s dog today if he knew about it when it happened. Instead replace the item that she isn’t suppose to be chewing with the item she should be.
