Like flaxseed, their high content of these healthy fatty acids makes them beneficial for your cardiovascular system, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, which cites a study published in 2012 in "Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry" showing that chia seeds help reduce fat storage in hearts and livers of laboratory animals.
Chia seeds and flaxseeds are both exceptionally rich in these healthy fats and other natural compounds, and make excellent additions to your meals and snacks.
The seeds also contain a number of other natural compounds, including phytoestrogens called lignans, which are found in the non-oily parts of the seeds and have additional health benefits. Lignans in flaxseed may also help protect you from certain types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer. The Cancer Center says that chia seeds may also have anti-cancer properties, although studies with human subjects are still needed.
Discuss both seeds with your doctor to decide if their biologically active compounds might be helpful for you. A clinical study published in 2005 in "Clinical Cancer Research" found that women with breast cancer who consumed flaxseed daily had lower tumor markers compared to a placebo group, suggesting that tumor growth was reduced.

Chia seeds also contain antioxidant compounds, natural chemicals that help destroy free radicals.
Unlike flaxseed, you needn't grind chia seeds to obtain all of their beneficial components. Also, because they contain antioxidants, which are natural preservatives, chia seeds store quite well, although you might refrigerate unused seeds until needed.
Consume chia seeds by mixing in water and adding sweetener or lemon juice, or use like flaxseed in salads or other foods.
