I am presently sitting comfortably on the couch, scouring Google for some interesting facts to give you about Alfalfa Sprouts. So the reason for all of this pre-amble is that I grow my own alfalfa sprouts and it’s a lot of fun and I think you should try it. I didn’t start to grow my own sprouts В for any health reason, I started to do it because it seemed like fun. Growing your own alfalfa sprouts is really easy and you go from seed to edible sprout in about 4 days! On day 4, before you remove your sprouts from the jar, put the jar on a windowsill for a few hours so they can get some sun.
These sprouts by the way don’t have that musty taste that some of the supermarket alfalfa sprouts have.
As part of my efforts to eat an organic clean food diet I’d been wanting to try sprouts for a long time. So for under $30 I was setting myself up to have fresh organic alfalfa sprouts for quite some time – infact this was so successful I think I’m going to get a few more jars! Repeat the rinse and drain cycle every 12 hours or so for 3-5 days and you should have a nice amount of sprouts.


This was my first attempt at sprouting anything and it seemed to go off without much of a hitch. We got these instructions to grow Alfalfa Sprouts from my daughter’s teacher years ago when she was in the 4th grade. I’ll admit that IВ was sorely tempted to buy a special seed sprouting jar with a cool green lid, but I resisted. Meanwhile, the alfalfa seeds are resting on the kitchenВ counter where they should begin to absorb water and miraculouslyВ make the leap from dormancy to tiny plants. To sprout 2 to 3 teaspoons of alfalfa seeds, I’d suggest a jar in the 18-24 ounce range so that you have plenty of space for rinsing, air circulation and seed growth. When I go to the pita store I always load up on the sprouts but I could never find them at the local grocer to buy for home. I was amazed at just how simple the process was and how quickly my jar was jam packed full of sprouts. I would feel very earthy and one with nature if I did that, I just don’t know where I am on sprouts. I’m trying to stop buying so much stuff, and growing sprouts in a regular oldВ jar better suits my sensibilities about recycling anyway.


Cleanliness is important in sprouting so that no bad bacteria ruins the process, so I ranВ my designatedВ jar (which previously held applesauce)В through the dishwasher so it would be sterile.
Over the next several days, we’ll be rinsing and draining the seeds as they (hopefully) sprout.
While at the health food store the other day I stumbled upon a sprouting jar for under $10 and some organic alfalfa seeds that I’m sure will last me FOREVER!
As a caution after reading many articles about sprouting they talk about bacteria growning duirng the process – I rinsed my sprouts with filtered water each time and made sure to keep the broken up as much as possible.
