Temperature and terpenes: why 180 °C tastes nothing like 210 °C

One of the more surprising things about a temperature-controlled vaporizer is that the same material can taste like two different plants depending on a setting you choose. That is not a quirk of the device. It is chemistry, and once you know what is happening it becomes the most useful dial on the machine.

Terpenes evaporate at different points

The aromatic compounds in cannabis are called terpenes, and they are not unique to it — the same molecules give pine trees, lemons and black pepper their smell. Each one has its own boiling point, and those points are spread across the range a vaporizer covers.

The lighter, brighter compounds come off first. Pinene, which smells like its name, is already evaporating around 155 degrees. Limonene, the citrus note, follows near 176. Linalool, floral and soft, arrives around 198. Caryophyllene, the peppery one, needs about 246 — hotter than most portable devices are designed to run.

What that means in practice

Start a session at 180 and the vapour is thin, cool and tastes strongly of whatever the flower actually smells like in the jar. Run the same load at 210 and the flavour flattens noticeably, while the vapour becomes denser and warmer. Neither is wrong. They are different points on the same curve.

This is why experienced users step temperature up during a session rather than picking one number. The first passes at low heat take the bright compounds while they are there; later passes at higher heat take what is left. The material is spent when it goes brown, not black — black means it burned, which defeats the point.

The variable nobody mentions

Grind matters more than most people expect. Material ground too fine packs down and blocks airflow, so the heat cannot move through it evenly and you get a scorched layer against the chamber wall and untouched material above it. A medium, uneven grind vaporizes far more evenly than a fine one.

Moisture matters too. Material that is bone dry vaporizes fast and harshly; material that is slightly damp produces almost nothing at low temperatures because the energy goes into evaporating water first.

Where the flower itself comes in

All of this assumes the terpenes are there to begin with. They degrade with heat, light and time, which is why material that has sat in a warm car for a week tastes of very little no matter what temperature you choose. Why two devices at the same setting differ

A number on a screen is a target, not a measurement of what your material experiences. Devices report the temperature of the heating element or the chamber wall, and the material sitting in the middle of the load is always cooler than that. Two devices set to 190 can therefore deliver noticeably different results, and neither is lying.

This is why advice to use a specific number transfers badly between devices. The useful approach is to learn where your own device produces the flavour you want and read that number as local knowledge rather than a universal setting.

Draw speed changes the outcome

On convection devices particularly, how fast you inhale changes how much hot air passes through the material and therefore the effective temperature. A slow, steady draw extracts more evenly than a hard, fast one, which pulls air through before it has given up its heat.

It is the single easiest thing to correct and the least often mentioned, largely because it is difficult to sell as a feature.
