Precincts in Navajo Nation

6:27 a.m.

Elections Director Rita Vaughan realized there were technical issues at voting sites across Apache County. In an email, she told her team: "All printers are not working with poll books."

Shortly before 7 a.m., Vaughan received an email from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. Officials there told her they had been informed of “printer issues” and voters being turned away at several precincts, including Cottonwood, Rock Point, and St. Michaels.

Editor’s Note: AZCIR and Votebeat created these maps showing when technical problems were resolved at 33 of Apache County’s 44 precincts on Election Day 2024. Reporters relied on emails exchanged among county elections and IT staff, as well as emails sent by the attorney who represented the county that day to the Navajo Nation Department of Justice. The records did not include resolution times for the remaining 11 precincts, so those precincts are left blank on the maps. County officials and staff declined interview requests that could have helped fill in the gaps.
