The acclaimed rise in circulation thus is meant to help your body get rid of these toxins. In reality, the temporary increase in circulation achieved by dry brushing also causes vasodilation—that is, it causes your capillaries under your skin to widen in diameter, thus causing greater bloodflow under the skin surface. Which is why skin appears pink after a round of dry brushing. This also causes a temporary plumping up of the skin, which hides cellulite to some degree. When the circulation slows back down however, so does the swelling. It does not reduce cellulite, but may cause it to be temporarily less visible. Cellulite in itself is not toxic deposits in your adipose cells but rather it is caused by fibrous bands that pull down on superficial parts of the skin, resulting in a ‘dimpled’ look.
Dry brushing, as the term suggests, quite literally entails brushing your bare skin—thighs, butt, arms, you name it—with a soft-bristled brush in order to give skin a fresher, smoother appearance. While there is scant scientific research to back up claims that it cures cellulite, it has some cosmetic benefits, explains Mona Gohara, MD, a dermatologist at the Yale School of Medicine—although they are fleeting at best.

I did each thigh for 20 min total; switching between legs every 5 minutes to give my skin a rest. I used a combination of circular motions as well as up and down motions. It does hurt a little (I’m using a citrus based oil to help reduce friction) but it isn’t overwhelming. Your massaged areas will get an angry red color but it fades slowly over the next hour or so after using this tool. It leaves a pleasent tingly feeling in your skin after you use it that makes up for the initial discomfort. So far I am happy with this product.

I was one of those babies born with cellulite, one with dimples everywhere but on my chubby cheeks. Yet for years, I honestly didn't care. Now, of course, the phenomenon of beauty therapists making cruel comments about their clients' bodies is well-known. Perhaps it is because the therapists are so accustomed to gazing upon people's bodies that they forget others aren't quite so hardened to such beady-eyed scrutiny and plain-speaking judgment. Or maybe it's because they know that if their clients are made more insecure, they'll spend more money on more treatments. Who really can say?
