The SMFM Coding Committee would like to present this ICD-10 file to all SMFM members to assist them with the transition to ICD-10.  This is best printed on a 11x17 paper. For all coding matters, the SMFM Coding Committee encourages members to refer to the SMFM Coding website resources, including ICD-10 & CPT literature specifically developed for MFM.  This file can be accessed by logging in at https://www.smfm.org/coding/encounter-forms. Updates to this file will also be posted on that site.
Coding Committee Update
Platform for Charge Capture and Coding Interface
By: Dr. Fadi Bsat

SMFM members have expressed increased interest in a mobile platform for charge capture and coding interface.  This has become more evident in the past few months with the adoption of ICD-10 and its increased complexity.  SMFM members have different options when adopting a charge capture option for their practice.  Some may still use a paper format while others use their institutional or practice software, which is also linked to their Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Mobile applications present a unique perspective and a clear advantage because it minimizes flow interruptions when looking for coding information or entering charges on-the-go.

The Coding Committee reached out to several charge capture software companies and reviewed their online software information and demo when available.
SMFM Communities: Obstetrical Simulations
Obstetrical simulations are becoming an integral part of our field, used for multiple important purposes.  They can be used for training faculty, fellows, and residents as they engage interdisciplinary teams to improve skills, communication, and patient outcomes.  Your practice may already participate in simulations related to obstetrical emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, breech delivery, and eclampsia. Increasingly, opportunities exist to use simulation training for fetal procedures and obstetrical critical care management.

The SMFM Communities has a topic area dedicated specifically to Obstetrical Simulation, under the direction of Dr. Dena Goffman.  Are you looking to start a simulation program at your site? Do you have questions about the evidence related to simulation and clinical outcomes? Would you benefit from resources as you build or expand your curriculum?  If so, please consider joining the discussions on the Obstetrical Simulations SMFM Communities site hereand share your experiences and questions regarding simulations!

Informatics Committee Update
The SMFM Informatics Committee continues to work on sharing the Society's work with its members through web presence and telecommunications. The Informatics Committee interfaces with the various SMFM committees to bring content to the website, telecommunication, and mobile electronics.  As our membership becomes increasingly mobile and electronically connected, our Committee continues to adapt and adopt new technology to ensure that every member has access to SMFM and its work products.

Currently, the Informatics Committee has the following ongoing projects:
If you have suggestions, questions, and/or a special interest in web development, app development or electronic dissemination, please contact Christopher Robinson. Thank you and hope you enjoy our website!
What Your Patients Are Reading
If a discussion with a patient alerts you to an article that we should consider featuring, or you are featured as an MFM expert in an article, please email Internal Communications Chair, Dr. Chris Han.
