On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, Orrick will host
our seventh annual "Dive/In"—a worldwide celebration of the
different backgrounds and cultures that constitute the global
community in which we practice law. As part of this celebration, we
are hosting diversity and inclusion events for clients and friends
of the firm in five cities across the country and in our Geneva
office—each focused on a different view on diversity (Please note
that our Portland office event at Bridge Meadows will take place
Monday, October 12).
We hope you and your colleagues will join us for one of the
following events. |

A
discussion and reception with Seneca
Women founders, Ambassador
Melanne Verveer and Kim Azzarelli, who are also the
authors of Fast Forward: How Women Can Achieve Power and
Purpose. Companies, countries and organizations the world over
are waking up to today's new reality. Women control the lion's share
of purchasing power and are increasingly essential to
competitiveness. The age of women's transformative economic
influence has finally arrived, and women are using their power for
purpose, redefining what power and success mean in the process.
Guests will learn how some of the world's most inspiring women are
using their growing economic power to create success and meaning in
their lives while building a better world.

Norton, now in her thirteenth term as the Congresswoman
for the District of Columbia, and the ranking member of the House
Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. Congresswoman Norton came to
Congress as a national figure who had been a civil rights and
feminist leader, tenured professor of law, and board member at three
Fortune 500 companies. She has been called one of the "100 Most
Important American Women" and one of the "Most Powerful Women in
Washington." Congresswoman Norton's remarks will focus on her role
and leadership in working towards obtaining voting rights for the

A
reading of the American Foundation for Equal Rights' and Broadway
Impacts' play "8" which was
written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black.
"8" dramatizes the evidence and arguments of Perry v.
Schwarzenegger, a federal trial that led to the overturn of
Proposition 8—an amendment eliminating rights of same-sex couples to
marry in California.
"8" was written by Mr. Black in light
of the Supreme Court's denial of a motion to release video recording
of the trial to give the public a true account of what transpired in
the courtroom. Segments of the play will be read by Orrick
attorneys, staff, clients and friends of the firm. A reception will
follow, with hors d'oeuvres provided by culinary entrepreneurs from
La Cocina,
an organization devoted to cultivating low-income women and
immigrant entrepreneurs.

A
reception, discussion and screening of the Peabody award-winning
film Soft Vengeance:
Albie Sachs and the New South Africa with noted Berkeley
filmmaker Abby Ginzberg. Soft Vengeance is
a film about Albie Sachs, a lawyer, writer, art lover and freedom
fighter, set against the dramatic events leading to the overthrow of
the apartheid regime in South Africa. Shining a spotlight on Albie's
story provides a prism through which to view the challenges faced by
those unable to tolerate a society founded on principles of slavery
and disempowerment of South Africa's majority black population. A
reception will follow. MCLE credit will be offered.

A
reception and panel presentation on issues facing women practicing
in various areas of international arbitration, including as counsel
in international law firms, arbitrators (sole and co-arbitrator) and
in academia. For many women in the arbitration practice area, it's
no surprise that they are underrepresented in leadership roles in
the field. This panel will discuss how women receive arbitrator
appointments, partnerships in prestigious law firms, important
academic positions, and sustainable participation. We will also
discuss whether young women interested in arbitration are finding
sufficient opportunities to practice and gain experience, whether
they are staying in these opportunities and whether firms and
institutions are creating a flexible enough environment for women
with families. Featured panelists are Alexandra Johnson
Wilcke, Partner, Python & Peter, Sole Arbitrator,
Co-Arbitrator and Arbitral Secretary; Jorun
Baumgartner, Research and Teaching Assistant, University of
Lausanne, Switzerland; Vanessa Liborio, Partner,
Orrick and Sole Arbitrator and Co-Arbitrator; and Rena
Scott, Of Counsel, Orrick.
