HomeStation Announces the Winners of the Ralph Baer Contest

by NorseGamer, HSM Editor-in-Chief

Over the course of 2011, HomeStation has run various contests; it’s a wonderful way to encourage new voices to participate, and the financial expenditure required is well worth it. In our last contest, eleven different writers walked away with twenty-dollar PSN cards; so, when trying to figure out how to top that, we decided to try something a bit different.

What if we had a writing contest dedicated to a specific topic?

When we ran our story on Ralph Baer — the acknowledged inventor of the video game, and a true genius in the field of electrical engineering — we realized we had the perfect topic to write about: How has the evolution of the gaming industry affected you, where do you see it evolving, and what part — in your opinion — does Home play into it?

Each winner would receive an autographed copy of Mr. Baer’s fantastic book, Videogames: In The Beginning.

Think about that for a moment. HomeStation might focus more on the social aspects of gaming, but anyone who considers himself a “hardcore” gamer should recognize the enormous value of this. A book about the invention of the video game, written and autographed by the guy who invented the video game, is more or less the ultimate platinum trophy one can have.

Thus, without further ado, your contest winners:

“Play Together!” — by ted2112

“The Games of Life” — by Burbie52

“Saving Kit” — by Keara22HI

Go back and reread these three stories; they’re absolutely amazing, and they do an outstanding job of examining how the industry has affected them in very personal ways. They exemplify HomeStation’s belief that what we experience in life is not so important has how we react to it, and what impact it has upon us.

The three winners will need to provide a valid mailing address to norsegamer@hsmagazine.net, so that the appropriate arrangements can be made. Also, as this is a bit more logistically complex than simply e-mailing a redemption code for a PSN card, please allow for the necessary time required to get the prizes to you.

Congratulations to the winners, and keep an eye out for our next contest, coming soon!

I am amazed and humbled that people read “Saving Kit”. It was a real catharsis for me to write it all down. As I said, I am indebted to Mr. Baer and the others who followed him for giving me a way to reach out to my son. I hope all gamers will stand up to those who think that video games are bad for children and point out that, selected carefully and used properly -- with adult participation (not just supervision) -- gaming is an excellent way to enhance a relationship.

  6. Congratulations to all three winners. All well deserved.

Keara just hit the nail firmly on the head here on gaming and gamers in general..

To Quote; “Those who think video games are bad for children and to point out that, selected carefully and used properly, with adult participation (Not just supervision) -- gaming is an excellent way to enhance a relationship”
