History: This building was originally constructed in 1855 by Thomas Cranney to serve as a general store. Cranney lived in a room on the second floor and rented space in the back of the building to house the first county offices and courthouse.  Cranney also served as Island County Auditor in 1856 and Clerk of the District Court in 1857.  The property was later deeded to the county and used as court and county offices until 1880, when the offices moved to Coupeville.  The original hand split shake roof lasted until 1944 when it was replaced. The building has been extensively remodeled but retains the reputation of being the second oldest public building left standing in the State of Washington

Description: Vernacular Residence.  Wood frame set on stone and timber foundation rectangle with long shed roof section on south façade (30’ x 30’) ; 6 bays wide; 2-stories.
