History: Captain Thomas Coupe settled on Whidbey Island in 1853, purchasing a Donation Claim on Penn Cove. He contracted with the Hill brothers to build a house. The building materials came from San Francisco and the house was constructed of redwood. The structure has been moved back on the property twice due to erosion of the bluff above the Cove. With the growth of Coupeville, the road which ran to the north of the house was moved father south so now the building sits off the road among the trees and overgrowth. The Bruce family willed the house to Children’s Orthopedic Hospital.

Description: Saltbox Residence. Wood frame set on post and block foundation; rectangle; 3 bays wide; 1 ½-stories; board and batten with clapboard siding on north façade; asphalt-shingled, sloping gable roof; corbelled interior chimney.
