Cafe Hound: Coffee Recommender Project

Coffee Segmentation Results

Segmentation results identified six broad categories of coffee ordered from lightest and darkest roast (based on Agtron ratings). Agtron ratings are a numerical representation of the consistency of the roast color (lower numbers indicate a darker roast <45, higher numbers indicate a lighter roast 50+).  Keep in mind that more than the roast determines the flavor profile and overall body of the coffee, which is why some of these segments may appear similar.

Below is the Medium Delicate Distilled Segment. It is medium-light roasted (on average) and average priced for specialty coffee.

Coffees in "Medium Delicate Distilled" segment are generally layered in their flavor experience. Beyond the mild fruit and floral flavors, there are often velvet-like characteristics to the texture and finish to the coffee, which can include red wine, brandy, or rum-like properties. Another distinguishing characteristic of these coffees are the hints of spice and wood such as roasted nibs, tobacco, coconut or wood in the finish. Medium Delicate Distilled coffees finish strong and contain enough cocoa flavors to balance the cup in essentially any brewing form, and when fresh, are exceptional as espresso or as pour-over.

Exemplar Reviews

"Big, intricate; vast but coherent. Black currant, vanilla, sandalwood, violet-like flowers, hints of chocolate and coconut, more in aroma and cup. Forceful but juicy sweet acidity; delicately syrupy mouthfeel. Sandalwood and coconut, in particular, resonate in a richly drying finish."

"Delicate, sweetly earth-toned. Pink grapefruit, frankincense, pipe tobacco, orchid, roasted cacao nib in aroma and cup. Juicy, richly tart acidity; silky-smooth mouthfeel. The finish is orchestral: pink grapefruit, pipe tobacco, cacao nib, with a hint of sweet orchid in the very long."
