Cafe Hound: Coffee Recommender Project

Coffee Segmentation Results

Segmentation results identified six broad categories of coffee ordered from lightest and darkest roast (based on Agtron ratings). Agtron ratings are a numerical representation of the consistency of the roast color (lower numbers indicate a darker roast <45, higher numbers indicate a lighter roast 50+).  Keep in mind that more than the roast determines the flavor profile and overall body of the coffee, which is why some of these segments may appear similar.

Below is the Geisha Segment. It is the lightest roasted (on average) and extremely expensive.

Geisha coffees are a rare and highly prized niche product within the specialty coffee market. Their origin harkens back hundreds of years to Gesha, Ethiopia. Typically, my experience with Geisha coffee has been overpriced and tealike. Geisha coffee is often very delicate and it takes extreme focus to distinguish the nuanced aroma and flavors. However, much like extra-premium wines, scotches, rums, and the like, it is worth trying a coffee of this type at least once a year to stretch and train your palette from whatever your baseline coffee might be.

Exemplar Reviews

"Beautifully structured and almost impossibly intricate in flavor and aroma. The fruit sensation is so deep and so complex that one could find almost any note in it: we settled on guava, mango and tangerine. Intensely floral, passion fruit, lilac, lily, with crisp cacao nib and sandalwood complication. Rich, lyric acidity; syrupy but buoyant mouthfeel. The aromatic fireworks quiet a bit but still saturate the finish."

"Immense, sweet, juicy, intricate. Lilac and jasmine, peach, apricot, rosehip, much more in aroma and cup. A vibrant but unobtrusive acidity shimmers in the heart of the sweetness; mouthfeel is satiny, full, almost nectar-like. Flavor, particularly the crisper notes, carries deep into a sweet, peachy finish."
