A ministry, in Christianity, is an act of service, carried out by Christians to express or demonstrate their faith. Jesus provided the pattern for Christian ministry - he came to serve, not to be served. The Church has a great history of ministry in various forms. In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians he describes ministry ‘as though God were making his appeal through us’ (5.20).
What opportunities can Sports Ministry create? Around the world people are finding something important in sport: 60 per cent of the entire population has been, or is, involved in playing sports regularly. Is it the action of sport itself, or is there a deeper theme involved? Ministries that deal with the whole of a person often result in that person finding more than they expected in their new relationships. For example: The Salvation Army has a great heritage of teaching music. Whilst a child and its family may initially be attracted by the physical education of playing an instrument, the innate ministry of playing music in a faithful, Christian environment and being taught by, and building relationships with, Christian teachers and volunteers, has often become the beginning of discipleship.
Important questions at this stage...
• What new opportunities can Sports Ministry create?
• Are we likely to engage with different members of our community?
• Is there something deeper than the activity of sport that draws people to be involved?
