I would also like to hear from other people that have attached Pergolas to concrete to see how they have held up and what they used to attach. Many  modern yards and patios are designed using fancier hard-scaping materials than simply concrete slab. Then you use the same hardware you would be using if you had an already existing concrete slab and you secure your posts to this much more stable surface. Which just goes to prove that if you build your own pergola using a proper set of step by step illustrated instructions and don’t forget the small details, then you will be enjoying the results of your handy work for decades. If you’ve decided that you really want to add a pergola to your property, then your next step is to check out our Guide to Building a Pergola in One Weekend.
Building the pergola over an existing patio (instead of building a new one) saves you a lot of time, money and work. Our existing patio was built over a sand and compacted gravel base, so we removed only the stones necessary to dig the 12-in.

If you plan to build your pergola close to the house, first measure the projection of your eaves as shown in (Photo 1).
Since I didn't want to wake up one morning with a pergola smashed into my kitchen, I had to anchor it down.
Since I didn't want to wake up one morning with a pergola smashed into my kitchen, I had to anchor it down. Since this one doesnt list size or Pergola or lumber, I am thinking of 2x10's for outer beams and 2x8s for rafters.
In return, you will receive a free pergola plan and also be enrolled to receive a 3 week Pergola Building e-Course that will teach you everything to get you started on your own DIY pergola project. You can also consider using wood chips or gravel as a floor or even pour a concrete slab underneath. Those are much more aesthetically pleasing options, but they are not sufficient surfaces for installing a pergola.

It is great that the old pergola in my yard has exposed brackets so that we can show you what it looks like, but you can bet that as soon as I finish re-designing my yard, the new pergola will have a much cleaner look at the base!
The slab is 16' x 16', so I thought I would just build it in the center, leaving a 3' walkway all around it.
The pergola pictured is an attached design so there are just two posts secured into ground. As I mentioned in the previous post, the pergola ended up being 10' x 10', built on an existing concrete slab.
