A minimum of 3 inches of mulch should be maintained in planting beds at all times to retain moisture and retard weeds.
Many landscapers apply wood mulch, which is supposed to provide benefits to plants and trees in a number of ways. However, many communities are becoming aware of the many problems which are now becoming associated with the use of wood mulch. It isn't just the cost of wood mulch that's a concern, which is minimal, it's the labor to keep buying, delivering and replacing it.
Many people might feel wood mulch is better, because of what it brings to tree roots when it deteriorates.
The facts are, most insects and rodents make nests, and wood mulch may be the perfect material available to them. Add to this the fact that insects and vermin can get no benefits from rubber mulch, and it lasts for years and years. Our state-of-the-art mulch installation equipment not only gives us the ability to get those hard to reach areas, but also allows us to control the amount of material being applied which keeps material costs down.

When the weather gets warm, we're always in a hurry to get our landscape looking its best, so we pile on the mulch. Seedlings can work their way through a thin layer of mulch, but too deep a layer could be impenetrable.
You may need to apply additional mulch in the summer to retain moisture and in the winter to insulate from cold.
If your garden has a layer of winter mulch, pull it away gradually as the temperatures warm.
To prevent stems and bark from rotting, pull mulch away from woody stems and tree trunks 1 to 2 inches. Mulch that's too deep will stimulate root growth in the mulch layer rather than in the ground.
From an appearance perspective, consider the size and style of the area you're putting the mulch in.
If you wish, you can work most organic mulches into the soil at season's end to improve the soil.

There are several products to consider when mulching: Work gloves prevent wear on your hands. During wet seasons, you may notice that there are more bugs than normal in your mulch, but these insects don’t tend to cause problems. Shredded rubber mulch or other inorganic mulches like stone or crushed rock are excellent alternatives if you find your mulch is popular with insects.
Sometimes, heavy rains or irrigation run-off causes wood mulch to wash into storm drains (or pools). Mulch can protect a plant's root system, add nutrients to the soil and slow the erosion of topsoil.
A 1- to 2-inch layer of fine mulch should be sufficient, while a coarser material should be 3 to 4 inches deep.
