As you may have heard, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s forecast, a stronger than normal El Nino weather pattern is developing that is expected to bring cooler, wetter weather to the Southern California area. What is it: Decomposed Granite, or DG as it’s commonly called, is a compactable material formed from the natural weathering and erosion of granitic rock. Benefits: DG is an ideal product for various projects because it is inexpensive, its permeability allows for good drainage, and is more stable than other natural ground cover materials such as gravel.
Advantages: Beach pebbles provide an elegant and sophisticated style and can be used for a variety of projects such as to topdress container plantings, to puddle around plants or boulders, pathways, or as borders around planters and paved areas. Maintenance: Similar to river rocks, you can use weed taming fabric and a blower to keep the area clear of weeds and debris.

An important first step before choosing which Keystone wall system is right for your project is determining the height of your wall.

Finding a balance between water conservation and making sure the aesthetic of your outdoor area does not succumb to the heat is a battle faced by many homeowners around the county. A popular option chosen by many homeowners has been to either completely replace or limit unused lawn areas with natural rock and stone.
Although absolutely gorgeous landscapes can be created from rock and stone alone, plants add an organic, natural element to all landscapes that just cannot be duplicated.
For those who simply do not want to give up the look of their lush, green lawn but are being hit hard by the high water bills, there is still hope.
It sounds like a joke, but has actually been standard practice for years with older, non-water conservation toilets. These are just a few ideas on how you can save on your water bill with products available from RCP Block & Brick.
For more information on any of the above products, or to speak with one of RCP Block & Brick’s knowledgeable sales staff, please contact an RCP location near you!

As we close in on the end of 2013 I feel very fortunate for the fact that RCP Block & Brick has been able to fare well during a building recession that started over six years ago.
Competition from Mega-Companies, the cost of providing benefits for employees, regulations and the litigious society in which we find ourselves, all stack the deck against small and midsize companies.

At RCP Block & Brick we face the same challenges that were cause for those old familiar names in the building material business to fade away. Thanks for recognizing all that RCP Block & Brick brings to the San Diego Community and honoring us with your continued support. A sandpit that doubles as a Zen garden - A Japanese garden could be just the solution if you like the idea of a sandpit for the kids, but don’t want it to impact negatively on your outdoor space. In this garden river stones of all the same size create a clean ground cover, especially where there is little need for pedestrian access.Design ideas for a contemporary side yard landscape in Seattle.
Decomposed GraniteThe basics: Decomposed granite, or DG, is a granitic rock that has weathered to the point of breaking into very small pieces and silt-like particles. Pea Gravel The basics: Pea gravel is a small, rounded rock that got its name because the rocks are about the size of a pea. River Rock The basics: River rocks are larger than pea gravel, typically 1 inch and larger in diameter.
How much rain we will receive this winter is still anybody’s guess, but if it is anything like the lesser 1997 El Nino, we can expect quite a bit of rain and flooding. This is accomplished by placing the sandbags to form a pyramid by alternating header courses (bags placed crosswise) and stretcher courses (bags placed lengthwise). We’ve already covered rebates offered by state and local agencies to promote water wise landscaping and products that help cut water usage.
DG can be used for garden pathways, rustic patios, or as a base for stepping stones, pavers, flagstone, and synthetic turf.
RCP carries two types of river rock: smaller 1”-3” that is sold by the yard and larger sizes of 3”-12” sold by the pound. River rocks can be used to create realistic dry river beds and are the perfect way to create an appealing border between paved and landscaped areas.
In order to qualify for the program the proposed project area must include grass that will be removed. Residents care about the aesthetic of their homes so much, that they spend more than half of their water in an effort to keep their yards looking nice. Incorporating this type of product into the landscape design of your yard can completely eliminate the need for watering while still leaving an aesthetically pleasing yard. Expanding on the above idea of adding rock and stone in your landscape design, consider adding native or drought tolerant plants to the design.
If you displace too much water, a single flush might not “do the job” and then require a second flush… thus negating the water savings that you were trying to achieve.
It becomes a challenge to survive when the cost of doing business and the price we can get for our products and services don’t coincide. Just rake the sand over after a play session and it will become the perfect spot for meditating once more.Inspiration for a contemporary full sun backyard landscape in San Francisco. I work them into nearly every design I create for my clients, as well as in my own landscape. They're available in a variety of colors, costs and sizes, and are used to create dry creek beds or to direct drainage through a property. It suppresses weeds and allows rain to penetrate while keeping the rock from sinking into the ground.
Our Lab won't even walk on it ;-) I added fine stone dust as a test in a small area with the idea to fill-in the void between the river rocks and it seems to make it firmer. I love the look and color of the crushed granite and am considering using it in my landscaping. Sandbags by themselves do not guarantee a water-tight seal, but are satisfactory for use in most situations.

However, over time some DG will break down and shift with exposure to weather and foot traffic. Gravel can be used to cover large areas of your yard, for smaller walkways, or to break up areas of plants.
You can use a variety of materials between the stones to achieve different looks such as gravel, river rocks and pebbles, DG, and moss. You cannot add square footage of removal area to your rebate amount after you’ve been approved for a rebate so it is important to accurately measure and calculate your area before applying. But keep in mind these products are best suited for smaller projects as the Country Cottage has a maximum height of 20”, while the Garden Wall can be built up to 24”. For taller walls, look no further than the Keystone Compac II, Keystone Century Wall, Keystone Country Manor, and Keystone Verazzo 4-Face Stone wall systems.
Although some residents find it easiest to simply cover the area with one of our available decorative rock ground-covers, other have planned out beautiful rock landscapes (such as dry stream beds), that incorporate a mixture of decomposed granite, decorative rock ground cover, medium sized cobble stone, and larger landscape boulders.
I had to think about that for a minute and then realized the fellow was just stating the obvious. Decomposed granite is ideal for pathways and rustic patios, and can also be used as a topdressing around arid plants.
It typically comes in a range of tan, brown and white color mixes, but do your homework to learn the cost of each. The texture is not smooth like pea gravel, but this choice is perfect for walkways and patios, as well as for setting off xeric plants.
I like to use this rock decoratively in the garden — to topdress container plantings, to puddle around boulders and to line borders of patios and beds.
That doesn’t mean you have to settle for ugly, dusty patches of brown dirt around your property.
These four systems provide different looks to satisfy any taste, while all of them are pre-engineered for walls up to 6’ in height. Cost: Crushed granite gravel is sold by the yard for $60 and up, depending upon your location and the size. Cost: This material is sold by the bag for $20 and up, by the pound for 35 cents and up and by the ton for $700 and up, making it a fairly pricey option. For every bit of natural rock and stone that you use in your landscape design is that much less water you need to keep your yard looking great. It only needs to be slightly deeper than its own diameter for it to provide cover and be a firm surface. Not sure I will be doing this on the pathway part because I'm planning to install flag stones 3 inches apart for that section. Some residents have completely eliminated the need for water while still having an aesthetically pleasing landscape design. Not that the color and style matter, but we have them for those customers that want to have a little bit of extra flare in their toilet tanks.
Installing landscape fabric underneath river rock is a great way to keep this heavier rock from settling into the soil below.
Homeowners may receive up to $2.00 per square foot of water-intensive grass turf removed and replaced by water conserving landscaping options. This rebate program can be a fantastic way to help homeowners pay for their landscape projects but there are some restrictions and eligibility requirements to consider before starting your project.
