Every month I take 10 to 20 minutes and jot down anything I know my family has planned during that month. Some of you might be wondering what the best calendar system to use is and that is something no-one can answer but you. We moved into our new house over six months ago, and I had high hopes that while unpacking I’d be able to get organized as I went.
I live in fear that a guest is going to come to my home and need to use the first floor bathroom and get curious and discover the piles.
I can’t live like this anymore, which is why my goal for 2015 is to focus on organization.
I’ve already started the process to get organized while on winter break with the wee ones. For me, getting organized is a process I began at the first of this year after reading a book I received as a Christmas gift.
The main tips to get organized and stay organized is to return everything back to the right place after we use it.
These are more general organization tips to get you started.  The ideas may not all work for you, but hopefully you will find something to inspire you! I have looked at many of the cleaning schedules out there on the Internet and many of them are just impossible for me to keep up with. As much as I hate mornings, I do find that I can get a lot accomplished if I have a set routine and pretty much just function on autopilot.
I’m not sure if this is only applicable to me, but there are times when I just want to do a simple task and I end up turning it into some major project that I do not have time for. So hopefully you will find some of these ideas useful and remember that little changes do make a big difference.  It may take some effort to adapt your ways, but it will be well worth it in the end!If you are looking for more specific ideas, I will be focusing on organization ideas and projects all month long.  If you have any great advice to share, let me know as I hope to incorporate some of your ideas too!  I would love to hear what works for you!Have a happy and organized weekend!
I love your idea for the cleaning schedule of crossing things off a list as you go and once the list is over start again. I have to say… I read a TON of blogs daily and this is the first one that I have EVER really wanted to respond to. This will look different for everyone but some of the items on my calendar are important school dates, due dates for bills, kids activities and any other commitments we may have that month. A master kitchen inventory list keeps track of all the ingredients you have in your kitchen and how many items you have on stock. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone and should not be construed as medical advice. Couple that with having to avoid the LEGOs Mister Man sets up in battle scenes across the remainder of the basement, including atop the dehumidifier, and I inevitably step on or kick something that is surprisingly painful each and every time.

It won’t happen in a week or in a month, but by finding solutions and taking it step by step, I am looking forward to having my house truly feel like a home again and losing the fear of being shamed by hidden clutter. My husband went to Vegas after Christmas, and I took our lack of scheduling as an opportunity to start getting things organized. Rather than lining her two dressers and nightstand with thing upon thing upon thing, we have a better space to place items and organize them so that she can find everything. If I’m the only one cleaning and organizing, that basement is going to look exactly the way it did a week ago within a matter of hours. There are times when people come over and I apologize for the mess and they laugh at me because their houses (so they claim) are so much worse. I am a full-time working mother, with a 5 year old spirited red-head, husband and a BIG house!!!!
Over the past couple of years I have made getting organized and staying organized one of my top priorities.
I have found that one of the best ways to use a calendar system is to look at your life in a month in advance and also daily.
I can deal with a few piles of laundry and some dishes in the sink, but I can’t handle utter chaos.
Once I had the list created, I went through and decided what could be done monthly, weekly and daily.
After a year of staying at home she decided to take her passion of working with people to the internet. When we ran out of peanut butter yesterday, I was lucky that I remembered buying more peanut butter or I would have given up looking for it long before I finally found it hiding behind a container of oats and around a box of Panko. When I lose that, I lose my focus and we’re back to square one, and I don’t want to backslide! By talking to the wee ones about why we’re cleaning and organizing and what their roles are, they get it and are going to help. I walked down into the basement this morning and just stood there smiling because the only thing on the floor was the carpeting.
When I bought bins to store items I own for each holiday and then labeled them, it made it so much easier to find everything when I was looking. Since we started purging our house to get it ready to sell last year, I’ve done a much better job of asking myself if I still need or want any given item when I put it away. When I spend six or seven days in a row organizing areas of my house for an hour or more at a time, I get burned out. Feel proud of what you have done and use that to motivate you to continue on.  Focus on what you have done and not on what you still have to do.
When I do get it done I feel like i am so much more efficient and things just run better in our house. I always start on mission and go crazy with the toughest project first then I am over or too tired to continue. The house we live in now is smaller than our previous house and just the right size for what we want and need. Though I tend to keep the family room where I do most of my work relatively clean, and ditto with the dining room and kitchen, when I’m swamped or overwhelmed, you can tell by the clutter that accumulates all too quickly. We go through the wee ones’ toys a couple times a year to be sure they will still play with them, and the same holds true for their books. Instead of hoping that I find the time to do some organizing, I’ll actually create an appointment on my calendar, just like I do when I go to the gym or to the doctor. I reorganized my top dresser drawer where I keep my make-up, hair stuff, and hiegene stuff (like q-tips and make-up pads) and just by putting different sized boxes everything has a spot in the drawer and is contained, and everything stays there as opposed to being moved around constantly!
I get so overwhelmed that I let things go and now my messiness is taking over my house…. Not to mention once I get behind on the housework, it feel almost impossible to catch up on. Since I have been using my cleaning task list, I have found this to be a great strategy to getting organized and staying organized! I put the menu list on the fridge and every night I look at it and see what sounds good for the following evenings dinner. I assigned the basement and office to my husband, who was home over summer break and available to help. I will also take a drawer at a time in my house and go through each item in it to see what I can make go away.
And though having all my pots and pans in three drawers was nice because I knew where they were, there are certain ones I use regularly and others that see more infrequent use. It’s important to me that things get put away in the right place and that I have the workspace I need to cook and bake, but there are plenty of other areas I want to focus on, too.
Just like a job, I’ll take a vacation day or two to recharge my batteries, which allows me to come back and work again.
It never fails to amaze me how I can still get everything done that I truly need to get done when I plan for everything. Our video game characters have their own box to keep them in one place, and the basement suddenly feels so much bigger.
Interestingly, she chose to organize her new shelving system completely differently from how I would have done it, but if it works for her, I’m not going to enforce my vision on her. Between deciding what books to keep and what to donate, which shelves to use for what purpose, figuring out what piece went to what games, and more, we were burned out by the time we finished. And there are other cooking implements I’d put further away that I used more regularly. As with all books of this type there are ideas and suggestions that I don’t believe will work for me. I also like to write it on a whiteboard so that I can edit it and change it as I realize that I have different priorities – and erase it when I’m done so I feel accomplished when I see the white spaces! But after almost 60 years of struggling to keep my living space organized I am finally confident that I can succeed.
