A 1966 study showed that a group of Buddhist monks who meditated regularly had elevated alpha rhythms across their brains. The researchers did brain scans of the subjects before the study began, three weeks into it, and at the end of eight weeks.
The study is a “beautiful demonstration” of the effects of meditation training, and of the ability to cultivate an internal awareness of one’s own bodily sensations, says Clifford Saron, associate research scientist at the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California at Davis, who was not involved in the research. Subjects in this study did not suffer from chronic pain, but the findings suggest that in pain sufferers who meditate, the beneficial effects may come from an ability to essentially turn down the volume on pain signals.
The subjects trained in meditation also reported that they felt less stress than the non-meditators.
The researchers are now planning follow-up studies in patients who suffer from chronic pain as well as cancer patients, who have also been shown to benefit from meditation.
These practices included focusing on audio recordings for guided meditation, non-judgmental awareness of sensations, feelings and state of mind. Given the pattern of associations revealed so far, we propose that some forms of meditation may have salutary effects on telomere length by reducing cognitive stress and stress arousal and increasing positive states of mind and hormonal factors that may promote telomere maintenance.
