The concept combines pre-engineered building and energy conservation features to maximize efficiency and cost savings, while offering architectural design flexibility and variation. The project is composed of steel components, including six shipping containers, a Butler pre-engineered building, a 10,000-gallon water tank, a shade canopy with integrated steel framing system that provides strength and protection against earthquakes, fire and wind, as well as large window and door openings to maximize natural light and ventilation. An adjustable steel frame and shade system reduces heat and glare on the building by 50%, and a solar breezeway, shown at right, allows for plug-in attachment of future solar electric and water heating panel arrays. Movable modules use gray-water irrigation and are planted with native desert plants and sedums to absorb heat and dust. By combining high-efficiency and mass-produced modular construction methods with innovative design in one of the harshest climate zones in North America, we have developed a low-cost, sustainable housing system that can be transported and quickly erected in most places. A proprietary steel framing system reinforces and ties the container modules together to resist earthquake and wind forces.
Large areas of the steel walls were removed to open the interiors to sweeping desert views, natural daylight and ventilation. The 18-foot-high stairwell is sheathed in recycled, corrugated metal with a vertical slit window facing east to distribute morning light evenly across the interior walls.
A 160-square-foot green roof made of 4-by-4-foot native plant modules is placed on the second floor shade framing. A recycled 3,000-gallon tank collects rainwater off the metal roofs to irrigate the breezeway landscaping. Panic rooms were brought into the public eye by the 2002 film starring Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart.
Here's a sampling of the real-life safe rooms we discovered in private homes and on the market.

The fanciest safe room doors we found came from a company called Creative Home Engineering. Panic rooms got more popular after September 11, 2001, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The DuPont company makes a safe room fortified with Kevlar, meant to withstand a category 5 hurricane. The shaded breezeway also provides a protected outdoor room as an extension of the interior. The typical housing project in San Bernardino County takes one to three months to go through entitlement and permitting; however, our project was approved and permitted in just one week.
It allows for large openings in the container walls and forms a framework between the residence and photo studio. A 10,000-gallon tank stores the home's potable water and emergency water in case of fire. Sometimes called safe rooms, these fortified bunkers are meant to shelter people during an attack, a burglary, or an extreme weather event like a tornado.
They use some kind of crazy space-age epoxy to glue the thing to a cement slab, usually in your garage. Earlier versions, called priest holes, were once built into the homes of Catholics in England, so visiting priests would have a place to hide during raids by anti-Catholic authorities. Use them to add color to a room, to create a refreshing and relaxing mood, to purify the air or simply as accent features.View in galleryGrow indoor plants in hanging terrariums or pods. Some of them are in plain sight, some are built into a foundation, and some are concealed behind bookshelves, staircases, or fireplaces.

Since the locations of panic rooms are often kept secret until after a buyer is secured, most of Trulia’s listings that include panic rooms don’t provide a picture. And you'll have some liquid courage to keep you company while the intruders search your house. You can create beautiful mini gardens and hang them from the ceiling or display them on shelves. Most include communication equipment so you can call the police after you barricade yourself inside.

You can have a tiny planter on your nightstand or hang one in the corner of the room.View in galleryIn the kitchen, create a small vertical garden for succulents and herbs. It can become part of your home and you can encase it in glass so you can always admire it.View in galleryOr you can bring a tree inside and create a sort of zen garden near the entrance. Decorate it with rocks and make sure the tree gets plenty of natural light.View in galleryAnother idea is to have an indoor vegetable garden.
