A really good friend to have (or be) in the zombie apocalypse is a proficient and reasonably equipped sniper.
One of the most critical components in being an effective zombie sniper is choosing a primary rifle. Since we’re only making shots out to that distance, we have a lot of latitude on what caliber we’re going to select for our sniper rifle. After carefully considering how to best accomplish the zombie sniper mission, I declare that the official primary weapon for the zombie sniper is a bolt-action rifle chambered in .300 Blackout.
The difference between subsonic and supersonic bullets is that subsonic bullets travel slower than the speed of sound, or less than 1,050 fps.
Bullets traveling faster than 1,050 fps break the sound barrier and give off a mini sonic boom as they pass through the air. Some zombie enthusiasts will claim that a rifle chambered in .22 LR would be a better choice because it can also be subsonic, and it is much smaller, so we could carry more rounds.
We’re all going to be doing some running in the Zombie Apocalypse, so it’s important to select our sniper rifle accordingly. I chose the .300 Blackout because it was a small cartridge that was powerful enough to shoot zombies effectively out to 200 yards and comes in factory supersonic and subsonic loadings that won’t drive you to bankruptcy should you choose to stockpile (and you should).
I also scrutinized several stocks and made my choice because of its weight savings and positional shooting potential, the two predominant criteria. I chose the A1-3 model because it is slender and easily accommodates offhand, kneeling, sitting and nonstandard positional shooting.
Keeping the rifle quiet was another reason we chose to build a bolt-action rifle instead of an AR. Jered threaded the muzzle of this rifle to accept an AAC suppressor, a crucial piece of gear for the zombie sniper. The barrel threads into a Surgeon round action that provides a solid foundation for this rifle.
The trigger I used in this rifle is the Xtreme Shooting Products Model XTSP single-stage trigger.
Two final features that are crucial for the zombie sniper are the APA bottom metal that we put on this rifle and detachable box magazines. The AI polymer magazines solve a lot of the feeding problems that bolt-action rifles with internal box magazines chambered in .300 Blackout have, because the AI magazines stack all 10 of the rounds right on top of each other, which places the cartridge directly behind the chamber.
Descending from the dot and circle is a vertical stadia line that serves as a ballistic reticle for both supersonic and subsonic loads.
While we don’t anticipate shooting much farther than 200 yards, the Leupold scope conveniently accommodates both subsonic and supersonic loads out to much greater distances and does so in a compact and lightweight package. While the bystanders who wrestled Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner to the ground during his shooting spree probably saved many lives, I would urge you to try get out of the area and to safety as soon as you can. Going toe to toe with these shooting suspects is not always the wisest course of action for a multitude of reasons.
We can look at the Empire State building shooting in August of 2012 as an example of what can happen. For the record, 16 rounds were fired by the responding officers, and 10 of them hit the suspect. Another reason I urge you to get to safety as opposed to shooting it out with the suspect is the possible lack situational awareness not just by you, but also by those who are also in the area.
It turns out that the “burglar” was actually the home owner’s teenage son who had snuck out of the house and was trying to sneak back in.
My point in telling this story is that we don’t always have a clear idea of what is truly happening. Time and again we (the police) go to calls where we receive partial or even incorrect information.
Getting into a physical altercation with an active shooter is about the second worse thing you can do, but the worst thing you can do is just cower and die. John Blair has an excellent book called Active Shooter Events and Response that breaks down past active shooter facts and the response from the Law Enforcement side of those events. If you want to learn more about learning how to protect yourself and your family from crime or attacks like this, I recommend getting a book like Strong on Defense: Survival Rules to Protect you and your Family from Crime as well as seeing if your local police department has neighborhood meetings. This is great advice and should be read by all.I would add that people have to stop acting like zombies!
This is a brilliant post, and should be required reading for the layman who doesn’t want to take the time to read a whole book on the subject. Generally speaking, Morea said, Florida had favorable rainfall in the winter and early spring, which is good for the deer population in the state.
Zone D, in northwest Florida, was split into two Deer Management Units (DMUs), each with its own set of regulations. Zone A will be three DMUs, Zone B will be one unit by itself and Zone C will have six DMUs within its borders. Along with the new DMUs, biologists also have been working on new antler regulations for a number of years.
In fact, Morea believes that hunter opinion and input may lead to additional changes in deer regulations in the future. With all of these changes, it stands to reason that the overall goals of the FWC with regard to deer hunting also have changed. Morea said that biologists could tell that hunters had different wants and needs in regard to deer management in the state, so they expanded the stakeholder approach from the public land to encompass the entire state, particularly the people who purchase hunting licenses each year. All of these new management strategies tie back to the 10-year Deer Management Plan, which was approved by the Commissioners in 2008. As a result, the Commission needs to be much more careful with allowing antlerless deer harvests in Florida than biologists do in other states. Taking that approach in Florida, according to Morea, would just reduce the number of deer without increasing body size. Some anglers hit the ice while others head out on chilly lakes by boat in search of winter cats. Your first step in winter cat fishing, long before you assemble your gear, is researching the body of water you are fishing.
Catfish often return to the same spots year after year, so once you find your sweet spots, you should find success there every winter. Winter cat fishing can be exhilarating and offers a different kind of thrill than the warmer months. Since wintertime cat fishing requires finding the fish and getting precise placement of bait for both for location and depth, a little technological assistance is helpful.

Playing catfish with just a handline during the winter months is exhilarating to say the least. If you do not have one of these fish locaters, try loading the Navionics App onto your smartphone. If you have friends who enjoy wintertime cat fishing, teaming up to target the ledges in lakes can net impressive results. Starting in the deepest spot, drill a number of holes so that you vary the depth of bait for each rod until you reach the flat of the ledge.
Winter cats are resting in large holes (not necessarily deep) with slow moving water, which makes the break side of structures the perfect spots for finding them. The opposite side of where the current flows (the break side) is where you find slower water, and the moderate flow of natural food sources. While the catfish are not moving as much in the winter, the native food sources still are, so one way to find the fish is to follow the food. Winter catfish set-up on a SeaArk Procat 200 with a dozen rods cast with shad and perch 360 degrees around the boat while anchored. Resources and ammunition will be scarce when the zombies come, so each round must be fired with deliberation. While we will all avoid drawing any unwanted attention, the sniper must be able not only to keep quiet, but also to kill quietly and from a distance. It is a small cartridge, but it’s more than capable of reaching out to 200 yards for head shots on zombies. When fired through a rifle that has a suppressor, bullets traveling at subsonic speeds have a negligible signature and are almost impossible to detect.
It’s still difficult to locate a sniper shooting a suppressed rifle even if the bullets are supersonic, but when we go to subsonic there is no sonic boom, and therefore nothing for the zombies to home in on.
Even with subsonic loadings and a suppressor, an AR still generates a considerable amount of noise when it’s fired because the bolt and bolt carrier slam back and forth each time we pull the trigger.
Subsonic .300 Blackout loads are quiet all by themselves, but when we combine subsonic loads with an effective suppressor we get the quietest combination possible. Surgeon actions are some of the most robust actions made and were my first choice for the Zombie Apocalypse. I chose this trigger because it offers excellent adjustability options while remaining robust. The APA bottom metal will stand up to any beating we could ever dish out, and the magazine release represents the most intuitive and unobtrusive design available on the market. When the bolt is cycled, it strips the cartridge out of the magazine and runs it straight into the chamber. The left side of the reticle as we look through the scope subtends the subsonic flight of the bullet at 100-yard marks out to 400 yards. The variable illumination should also prove invaluable because it allows us to engage zombies from dusk until dawn. It is an ideal combination of light weight, speed, accuracy and silence, all geared to work around the .300 BLK cartridge. Be it a mall, school, or an office setting, these sick individuals are suffering from mental and emotional deficiencies, and generally intend to harm as many people as possible. But shooting at a paper target is quite different than shooting at a moving target that is shooting back at you. Your brain will dump adrenaline into your body and will do things such as constrict blood flow to less vital areas of your body. Having no clue who this person is, only that he is on the scene of a felony in progress and he is carrying a handgun, I yell again to drop his weapon. The man with the gun was the neighbor, whom the home owner had called before calling the police. We do not always have a full understanding of what is going on when we first arrive on scene. Again, your body just dumped a lot of adrenaline into your system in a “Fight or Flight” reflex. You will most likely have a flood of thoughts and emotions that you may not fully understand or comprehend. I think you’ll find there are some key lessons that you can learn that could not  only teach you what to do if you face an active shooter, you can pull lessons to learn how to protect yourself in several different crime and SHTF scenarios. Also, it never hurts to see if there’s anyone down at your local VFW or American legion.
In his off time, he is a single father who enjoys playing with his kids and watching football. Sad, this individual is targeting our excellent RCMP officers and the entire city of Moncton is on lock-down. This goes along with what I was saying about not going toe to toe with armed suspects…and their possibly being more than one.

When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge. The rest of the state now has been divided into a series of DMUs — effective this year — to improve the ability of biologists to manage deer statewide. All of these changes have been brought about in part because of a change of philosophy and mindset of hunters over time.
According to him, there has been a shift away from wanting to protect does and harvesting bucks in all age classes. The proposed regulations had very good support of hunters, up to 60 and 70 percent in some DMUs.
Of course for years, the agency didn’t make many significant changes to deer management, instead leaving it to the discretion of individuals on private lands, while managing public lands based on input from local stakeholder groups.
According to Morea, the FWC needs to do a better job of providing information to hunters about the unique challenges of managing deer in Florida. Successful anglers have a number of ways to arrive at the two key factors for catching cats in colder water: locating where the lethargic fish are resting and getting bait right in front of them at just the right depth. If you are new to winter cat fishing you might initially spend time experimenting on different lakes and rivers at different depths. Half the fun is finding the fish, and with a few secrets up your sleeve, braving the cold will be a worthwhile endeavor. A group of eight or 10 people hitting the ice together enables you to spread out the rods along ledges where the fish often cruise for food.
Fishing with multiple rods at multiple depths near the ledges and drop-offs has you covered when a school of cats moves through.
If you are fishing on ice or from the bank, a fish finder or sonar can help you locate schools of bait fish. If they are diving into the water, you know bait fish are present and the catfish are nearby.
Gang-banger street theater and its accompanying spray-and-pray marksmanship strategy are losing propositions.
The majority of the world’s population lives in an urban environment, so it’s logical that most of us will be fighting for our lives at or near our home alongside our neighbors. Smaller calibers are going to be better, because the smaller the cartridge, the more we can carry. The .300 Blackout cartridge also has the added benefit of being commercially available in either subsonic or supersonic loadings. Our servicemen returning from overseas can recount numerous cases where bullets fired from their government-issued rifles (that are much more powerful) glanced off the human skull.

The Edge product line uses graphite and resin instead of fiberglass, making for the lightest stock possible. Jered Joplin is the owner of APA and is both a dedicated rifle builder and an avid competitive shooter.
The zombie sniper is a specialized member of a team who needs to bring the unique capability of killing zombies at long distances in almost total silence.
The Surgeon round action has the same footprint as a Remington 700 short action, so there are plenty of aftermarket accessories available that allow us to build our zombie sniper rifles to fit a wide variety of tastes. It is crisp and much more user-friendly than any factory and most aftermarket triggers designed to fit the Remington 700 clone actions.
Internal box magazines stagger the cartridges as they are loaded, so each time the bolt is cycled the cartridges enter the chamber from either the left or right side of the action. The magnification range is exactly what we need to shoot from zero to 200+ yards in as small and as light a package as possible. The supersonic flight of the bullet subtends along the right side of the vertical stadia line and goes out to 900 yards. While you may not be their intended target, you are still in harm’s way if you find yourself in this unfortunate setting.
The study found at only 18% of the rounds fired by police actually hit their intended target. While the officers’ shooting was certainly justified, it shows what can happen when even trained law enforcement officers get into a shootout.
As I began making my way up to the house, I see a man carrying a gun running across the yard. Shootouts like Columbine and the North Hollywood bank robbery had more than one active shooter. Do not assume that because you are the good guy, the police or other bystanders will automatically know that. Try to remain out of the shooter’s line of sight, and don’t move if it is not safe to do so. The more prepared you are to do that, the more likely it is that you’ll be successful in saving your life and the lives of those around you. Sadly one officer wasn’t paying close enough attention in the aftermath of the first shootout and was shot in the back. Here’s what Graywolf from Graywolf Survival carries and why, as well as some suggestions on how to plan your EDC kit. This is currently the list of the top 10 best-selling prepper and survival gear items, along with an explanation for each. Nonetheless, even if you’ve put it off, there are places you can go to bring home some venison this year.
Of course, it helps if hunters pursue their sport in the best areas, but determining the best areas is hard as, according to Cory Morea, Florida Fish and Wildlfie Conservation Commission Deer Management program coordinator, deer management isn’t measured by annual changes. Of course, the new regulations differ between DMUs, with the intention of protecting 18-month-old bucks from being harvested to allow them the chance to grow. He says that magazines and hunting shows have popularized certain management techniques that don’t apply to Florida, and could actually be detrimental to the herd in the state.
They shouldn't: Only a few subspecies of the black widow and brown recluse can inflict enough damage to cut short a hike. When water temperatures dip below 50 degrees, the fish slow down and become less aggressive hunting for food.
Most avid winter anglers stress a catch and release policy for larger cats for this reason. Use that as your starting point to fish the area, keeping an eye out for natural ledges or a creek mouth where cats may be hiding. A single human can only be in one place at a time, and everyone has to sleep sooner or later.
The ability to move undetected, then engage zombies without drawing the attention of other zombies will be critical. We can’t shoot zombies we can’t see, so there is no need to buy a sniper rifle capable of shooting out to 1,000 yards, a distance for which most military snipers train. Being able to carry a large quantity of ammunition will be invaluable during the Zombie Apocalypse. A .22 LR bullet travels at a slower speed and weighs less, so the risk of the bullet glancing off the skull increases, especially as we increase the distance to the target. While some of the exotic camouflage options are lost with the Edge line of stocks, I decided that the weight savings were more important than visual appeal.
We expect the Zombie Apocalypse to be a run-and-gun endeavor where we’ll need to stay on our feet and mobile at all times. When I first spoke with Jered about building a sniper rifle for the Zombie Apocalypse, we agreed that accuracy and weight would be our primary concerns. While bolt-action rifles would be unwise for every member of the team, it’s crucial that one member of the team have a rifle similar to this one.
The reticle consists of a dot surrounded by a large circle, which, when illuminated and set at 1.5X, works well for CQB distances. For all you know, someone could be watching you while they are on the phone to the police, telling them that YOU are the shooter! We now have a much better understanding of things such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc.
Over the next year, biologists will be working at reaching out to hunters with information about which techniques do and do not work in the Florida setting. Here's what you need to know about North America's most venomous spiders, from how to avoid them to treating their bites. Met deze vouwwagen kun je middenin de wildernis staan en toch nog behoorlijke luxe ervaren.
If you fish just below the cloud, you are likely to find the catfish that are waiting to feed. Also, it is physically impossible for an individual to accomplish the myriad tasks required to sustain life—whether it be gathering food, looking for shelter or providing security. These are tasks a sniper will know how to do well and can teach other members of the group. Fighting in urban areas where people and buildings crowd in on us, limiting how far we can both see and fight, requires snipers to choose their rifles and ancillary equipment accordingly.
A .22 LR might be a good choice if you want to stick it in a zombie’s ear, but I would prefer never to get that close. Weight was a big concern right from the start, so the choice to use a McMillan Edge was easy. If not, try sprinting 50 yards at full speed, picking up your firearm, and then shoot at a moving target 8-12 yards away as quickly as you can. There is no shame in it, and there is nothing “Manly or Tough” about not seeking help to deal with it.
I carry a Boker Plus Subcom Black Knife in my wallet as a part of my personal EDC kit but Survival Life has a giveaway right now on a folding credit card knife that you should look into if you don’t want to spend as much as I did. Nou, na het zien van de Conqueror UEV 440 willen we weg met een vouwwagen, maakt niet uit waarheen als het maar stoer en heel erg gevaarlijk is!
In the spirit of helping our readers prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse, I have prepared some notes on what represents the ideal zombie sniper rifle and scope.
Most neighborhoods in Anytown, USA, will be very similar in that 200 yards will be about as far as we can reasonably expect to shoot.
