In early October 2012, Sean Coomey and Xavier Dubuisson travelled to Tanzania from Ireland to install a solar power system at a primary school part of the Mvimwa Benedictine Abbey. Mvimwa school hosts a kindergarten and primary school with approximately 470 pupils, aged between 4 and 13 years old. The overall objective of the project was to help improve the educational facilities and the well-being of the children at Mvimwa by increasing the electricity supply to the school via the installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) energy system. The drawing below is a single-line diagram of the off-grid solar PV system installed at Mvimwa. When the batteries are too discharged to continue supplying the electrical loads, the Sunny Island turns on the generator (13 kVA Olympian GEP 11SP4 supplied by Finning UK & Ireland in Dublin)  to meet the loads and recharge the batteries.
The system was designed on the basis of a detailed analysis of the existing and projected electrical loads at the school and sized in order to provide most of the electricity demand on an average day under the constraints of the available budget.
The 1250 km journey took approximately 24 hours of driving across magnificent Tanzanian landscapes of plains, plateaux, mountains, natural reserves, villages and towns. After making its way to Tanzania, and weeks of arduous negotiations by Brother Max to get the container out of Dar es Salaam Port, the solar equipment was eventually delivered by truck to Mvimwa.
By Wednesday morning, we were on site, welcomed and introduced to the school community by a beautiful rendition of the national anthem by the pupils and a lovely speech by the principal, Brother Beatus.
We tried to maximise the training opportunity for everybody by rotating people between jobs according to their interests and abilities, and taking our time to explain what was happening. The existing 3-phase generator was deemed to be highly oversized and running inefficiently. By the first night, the mounting frames were largely assembled and 50% of the solar modules installed. By the second night, the solar array was fully installed and ready for electrical connection. After a beautiful day of solar power, the batteries were fully charged and ready to service the school at nightfall. On Sunday, we had a wonderful experience attending Mass at the Abbey with beautiful singing by the lively choir, and emotional speeches by Bro Max and the volunteers – acknowledging the bond created by the rich experience of working together for the benefit of the school community. The solar team, joined by a few school teachers and monks, then went off for a barbecue in the bush, beside the impressive waterfalls of the Matalani River. One of the primary objectives of the project was to enable a more extensive use of the computer room set up by Irish NGO Camara in 2010, previously limited to 2 hours a day when the generator is on.
Teachers will now be able to print, photocopy and use computers during daytime too, removing the burden of night time use. The safety and wellbeing of children at night will improved by having better lighting of dormitories and circulation areas.
The solar PV should cover most (>90%) of the electricity supply, displacing inefficient diesel generators. Another direct financial benefit is that solar energy removes the vagaries of fuel price variation and the impact it has on school management. Daytime access to internet and other communication facilities (faxes, etc.) will make life much easier for the school staff but also for people at the Abbey. One of the key outcomes of the project implementation was the training opportunity it afforded to the team.


This was a human experience of discovery for the Solar Without Frontiers volunteers, made so unique by the caring and friendly attention received from the Mvimwa  Abbey and School communities.
For the Benedictine communities of Glenstal Abbey and St Ottilien Archabbey in Germany, as well as the many individual or corporate donors, it is the reassurance that their gifts will make a real, durable difference for the Mvimwa school and its pupils.
It is also hoped that this experience will inspire others in promoting and using solar technology for the sustainable socio-economic development of their community.
It works through an arrangement of hoses and valves that replace the standard battery caps. If your battery has a nonstandard spacing you will need to replace the manifolds with the included swivel T’s. One end of the squeeze bulb filler assembly may be inserted into the other to keep the line clean and to provide a convenient way to hang the filler in a safe place between uses. There are other solutions as well, such as an automated watering system that electronically determines when batteries need water. It’s used primarily where mineral buildup can pose a problem like a pump or in this case, a flooded lead acid battery. The advantage of the extra batteries is to use AC appliances with an inverter, which produces no noise.
But solar energy systems can contain high DC voltages within the networked solar panels and high AC voltages within the inverter - there is simply no room for mistakes when working with high voltages, especially where high currents are present. Solar chargers can usually accept a multiple range of voltage inputs, the basic being 12-24 volt chargers. Once the battery(s) has been connected and the charger display (or status lights) turn on, you are ready to connect the solar panels.
Once your system is assembled, i.e, solar panels, solar charger, battery and (Optionally) the inverter , you can either use the power output from the charger (Globe Symbol) to power small devices, or you can simply connect an inverter directly to the battery(s) so that you can power household appliances.
So if battery voltage falls too low, the relay switches off, in turn switching off the devices connected directly to the battery! Also included is a handy button to show the amount of power left in the battery and when it's low, just use the car charger, wall plug, or even leave it out in the sun to quickly recharge. It just takes less than 3 hours of wall charging to fill it up and the internal battery provides 10 - 12 hours of run time for your laptop with a full charge.Portability, the whole thing folds up nicely into a little package. I bought it before I went on a trip to Europe for half a month, and it was very useful because I could charge it up all the way at night, and then if any of my devices (or my friends') died during the day, where it was near impossible to find a power source, they could be charged. It works like it says it will, my main concern was that it could charge bigger gadgets, mainly my ipad and camera gear. Batteries have been used for a long time with off-grid solar systems, but have only recently begun to be used with grid-connected systems. This increase in self-consumption is valuable, but in fact the advantages of home battery systems go beyond that and in the UK can even mean that the payback time of installing such a system in the house, when combined with a sufficiently large PV array, can bring payback times of less than 10 years.
With a DC Coupled system using an SMA Smart Energy inverter, the batteries are connected on the DC side of the inverter and are charged with a charge controller unit.
How much electricity can be saved depends a lot on the load profile and behaviour of people living in the property as well as the size of the PV array and battery.
On a 6 kW array, for most of the day the production from the array is not even at 3.6 kW, so the inverter can simply convert all the energy and send it to the house. With a battery, an inverter can be undersized more than normal, because some energy that would have been clipped is instead stored in the battery for later use. Inflation in electricity prices will increase the benefit, as will any attempts by the household to increase self-consumption further. Such a battery system is advantageous for the grid, because it flattens the generation peak of the system.
The SMA Lithium-Ion battery has an expected lifetime of 10 years, with a warranty of 7 years, meaning that by the time the system has reached the point of paying for itself, the battery will be reaching the end of its life. The project was an international co-operation between Solar Without Frontiers (Ireland), Glenstal Abbey (Ireland), St Ottilien Archabbey (Germany) and the Mvimwa Abbey (Tanzania). The school being off the grid, it was relying on a diesel generator for its electricity supply. The solar array is made of 30 poly-crystalline panels (REC Peak Energy Series 245W) and has a total capacity of 7.35 kW peak, ground mounted with an inclination of 15 degrees and facing North (!). An Interface panel was supplied and pre-assembled in Ireland free of charge by ASC controls in Lissarda Co Cork.
Safe in the knowledge that the equipment had arrived without apparent damage, everything went quickly for the Irish team – flights were booked, final preparations made and suitcases packed. Bro Edgar (trainee electrician) and Bro Matias (qualified electrician and facility manager at the abbey) worked closely with Sean (electrical engineer) on installing the batteries, inverters and other power system elements. It was replaced by the new single-phase generator and will be put to better use at the Abbey. When we realised that there had been a misunderstanding on the size of the concrete blocks used for ballast, a solution was quickly found to retrofit them without delaying the solar array installation. It was a great delight to see the school literally glowing in the dark – and silence in the generator room! We were then treated to a full tour of the Abbey, its hospital, its farm, and vocational training facilities. We were finally able to relax in good company, with the help of roasted goat meat, beer and a bottle of Irish whiskey. With solar electricity on, computers can be on during the day and allow kids much more learning time on them – with a direct benefit for computer literacy. It also means that workers will have more and better lighting to carry out activities such as cooking, baking, cleaning, etc. Solar light will also remove the cost of kerosene and batteries currently used for night lights. It is estimated that the project will result in an annual saving in diesel of €3700 (not counting the time of the weekly 5-hour journey to Sumbawanga, and wear and tear on the van, for collecting the fuel).
When the price of fuel went up, as it does, it created serious difficulties for balancing the school budget.
The heads-down hands-on experience of installing the solar system was new for most involved.
It also helped increase the volunteers’ know-how and confidence in undertaking other solar projects in the future.
This is particularly true in Africa where access to electricity is such an acute issue for health, education and economic development. The majority of flooded lead acid battery failures are caused by under or improper watering. A simple squeeze bulb hand pump provides the water supply via a quick disconnect to the water supply hose. These systems are typically used with solar installations having large battery banks, but may serve you well if your RV has a monster battery bank. If your battery charger has an equalize function it is best to add water after equalizing the battery. Purified water is generally free from pathogens, organic and inorganic chemicals, and heavy metals. For almost everything with the exception of your air conditioner, you can run off of batteries and an inverter.
It’s the water component of the electrolyte that is lost, increasing the concentration of the acid in the battery. Typically, it will take 3 12-volt Optimas to retain the same capacity as 2 group 24 FLA batteries.
On the type I used, if the injector went bad you would not know it, it just would not water that cell. Then simply push your stripped battery connector in place and then tighten the clamp with your screwdriver. For the HUGE benefit of not requiring fuel, the biggest con I guess, is probably finding the space to mount your solar panel(s) - Our system simply has the panels resting against the garage wall! Higher voltages flow more efficiently and with lower losses through extended cables with minimal diameters, than lower voltages, given the same parameters. Intelligent overpressure also has the overcurrent protection, when manually select the wrong time, it will automatically shutdown.


Such a system is called AC Coupled because there is an AC bus in-between the solar inverter and the battery inverter. Excess energy which cannot be used by the inverter is stored in the battery for later use.
Currently, this increased self-consumption by itself would not give very fast payback times for a battery system, however there is an additional, more important benefit.
However, because of the battery being on the DC side of the array, this is not a problem. Because the array is so large, self-consumption of the array will still hover around the 40-50% mark.
On a sunny day it is broad shouldered and flat at the top, giving greater support to the grid in the mornings and evenings and a constant, steady contribution to the grid during the middle of the day.
However, when the time comes to replace the battery, it will be the only component that needs replacing, not the modules, nor the inverter itself. He will then compile a detailed quotation which will be posted or emailed to you, we will not try to sell you a system at your home and we do not use high pressure sales. It is recognised as a centre of excellence in education, and is one of several primary and secondary schools operated by the Benedictine Order in Tanzania. However, diesel is very expensive and must be transported by road over long distances, resulting in electricity supply being limited to 2 hours a day prior to the solar system installation. The function of the interface panel is to provide an AC connection point for all components of the system and to provide change-over functionality for the generator. A simulation of the operation of the system with the software RETScreen indicates that the solar installation should deliver 10,500 kWh per year, or 85% of the total predicted electricity usage.
Xavier and Sean arrived late in Dar es Salaam via Amsterdam on Sunday 30 September, where they were welcomed by Bro Max and joined by Rick Coe, a marine engineer originally from Zimbabwe and solar enthusiast who volunteered to come and help us with the installation.
The volunteers were joined by a dedicated group of helpers from the Abbey, the school and the nearby village. The existing control panel was found to be deficient and was also replaced by a brand new interface panel. We know now that it would have been more efficient to cast concrete pads directly into the plinth (or the ground) and we’ll take that as a lesson learned for the next project. On Saturday morning, we switched on the system and it was cries of relief and joy all around! It was time to enjoy the cold beers – another first at the school –which we had put in the fridge during the afternoon in anticipation of our celebration. We were fascinated by the anaerobic digestion system producing biogas for cooking with cattle and pig dung and other organic waste.
The knowledge that we were in a Game Reserve (with traces of elephants and lions all around) added some thrill to the proceedings – although the presence of a local armed guard gave us some peace of mind. Combined with internet access, this opens a virtual access to the world for the school and a broad range of educational opportunities. Similarly, the generator maintenance service and spare parts had to be paid in dollars, creating vulnerability to changes in exchange rates.
The availability of trained and experienced technicians on site will be a strong guarantee that the solar system will be looked after properly in the future. But solar energy is equally valid in Ireland and the rest of the ‘industrialised world’ where breaking our dependence to fossil fuels is an imperative.
RVs are particularly hard on batteries, constantly discharging and charging them on a frequent basis, causing them to lose water over time. Several batteries can be safely and simultaneously filled from a remote position without ever having to touch a battery or remove a cap. Attach swivel T’s to valves by carefully pushing while rotating each swivel until it snaps in place.
I have plenty of CCC so I’m not exceeding any weights even fully loaded and ready to go. Replenishing the battery with water brings the PH back in to balance so the chemical reaction necessary to make electricity can occur.
I would have to go back and check to make sure that all cells were watered, for that I could save the money and water while checking. So if the solar panel array was going to be a great distance from the energy system and long cables were used, then the best results for energy production would be achieved with higher voltages - Shorter distances don't care much for losses. The advantage of such a system is that it can be retrofitted onto existing installations and the installer can be flexible about the technology and size of battery bank they are using.
Such a system is a larger up-front capital cost, but allows for greater self-sufficiency and an overall greater return on investment.

The two SWF volunteers, undertook the technical delivery of the project, from concept stage to design, procurement, installation and commissioning. Mvimwa, a beautiful rural and remote area,  is located about 60 km north-west of the district town of Sumbawanga, between Lake Rukwa and Lake Tanganyika. This imposed significant restrictions for the use of the school’s computer room and the provision of other commodities we in the West take for granted such as lighting (it’s dark at 6.30 pm in Tanzania), refrigeration, communication, radios, TVs, etc.
The next morning, we left with a VW van and a crew of 8 for a long 2-day road trip across the country via Morogoro, Iringa, Rujewa, Mbeya, Tunduma, Sumbawanga and finally Mvimwa. Two teams were set up, one concentrating on the solar array installation and the other on the electrical works – with several contractors (referred to as ‘fundis’ in Kiswahili) doing civil works around the installation. Thanks to Sean and his collaborators, the electrical installation was made to be the best industrial standards and under the best health and safety conditions possible.
We found the SKT-type mounting frame system from BDS very robust, flexible and relatively easy to install.
We spent the rest of the day commissioning the system and going through the operating instructions with Bro Matias.
The Abbey also uses hydropower to cover part of its electricity supply during the rainy season.
Generally, the greater availability of electricity will help the school to work more efficiently. And if your RV has a cheap or poorly behaving charger, your batteries can suffer an untimely death due to the charger boiling the batteries dry. And automatic control valves ensure each cell is closed when the precise water level is reached. If the battery has been discharged (partially or fully), the water level should still be above the plates. 12 or 24 volts, the charger automatically adjust to the specifications of the batteries that are connected - A totally flat battery will not charge properly in this case! So in this case, you DEFINATELY do not want to hard wire a solar panel directly to a battery! Do the same for the other connector, so that both the Negative and Positive connections are complete.
It is also an architecture that offers greater support to the grid by ironing out production spikes. On Saturday 6th of October evening, the lights went on at the school without the background noise of the generator – to everybody’s amazement. After a few trial and errors, we had a good routine in place – a very different approach than the manufacturer’s instructions but nevertheless very effective. We also took a walk to the top the hill from where we savoured impressive views of the region. One way to prevent this from happening and to ensure the long term health of your batteries is to mod your RV with a battery watering system. The battery box is the one in Mod #1 with the gray and red battery case colors and the inverter hanging off the back of the enclosure.
