From the kitchen to the bathroom and beyond, vinegar is the most flexible of products sure to have a daily use in your home and life. Herbal vinegars: Wine or white distilled vinegars are sometimes flavored with the addition of herbs, spices or other seasonings. The Vinegar Institute conducted studies to find out and confirmed that vinegara€™s shelf life is almost indefinite. Storage of water is one of the simplest but most neglected areas of emergency preparedness. According to the Red Cross and Civil defense, you need a minimum of 14 gallons per person for a 2 week period.
If you have pets you need to remember to include about a gallon a day per dog and a pint per day per cat. 5 gallon plastic water containers are available at army surplus, sporting good stores, discount stores and preparedness stores.

What I love about these charcoal box ovens is they can actually bake at the same temperatures as our regular ovens at home.
Well, okay, maybe it was while the head peep was making my dinner on the counter and I wanted to get a head start on it.
We now have stove knob covers as if we had toddlers in the house, because the last thing we want is for Newton to pull this stunt while no one is home to turn off the gas!

Indoor cats are less likely to be lost because they aren’t as likely to fall victim to misfortune outdoors. The indoors is a safer place to be, and the average lifespan of a cat who lives indoors is ten years longer. Many people find that it’s difficult to keep a determined cat indoors, but spaying or neutering can help with a cat’s drive to get out any open door and reproduce. It may sound obvious that you need to let guests who come into your house know that your cats aren’t allowed outside, but everyone who comes into your house may not keep their own cats indoors. In the chaos of a holiday visit from your family, it helps to enlist everybody’s help to make sure there aren’t any feline escape artists at work! If you are having work done on your house, like plumbing repair or other trades, it is safest to close your cat in a separate room with litter, water, and other necessities so that he doesn’t make a run for the door while the plumber goes back and forth to the truck a dozen times an hour. You can make it safe for your cat to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors without the danger by providing access to windows with secure screens.
A small screened porch in your entryway can also serve as a safety measure for keeping especially determined cats inside.
One of the times that indoor cats can become lost is while being transported outside the house, such as to veterinarian appointments. Also, the plastic on many carriers can age and become brittle, especially if you store them in an attic, garage, or basement where they are subject to extreme temperatures. No one wants to think that their cat could get lost, but the best way for your cat to get home safely is to be prepared.
If your kitty is lost, the person or organization who finds your cat may ask for proof of ownership. A safety collar with ID is a way for your cat to be identified on sight as being an owned cat. ID on the collar with current contact information allows anyone who finds your cat to quickly find you and reunite the two of you. Identification in the form of a microchip implanted under your cat’s skin that you update with a registry when your contact information changes is a great, permanent way to identify cats, especially since safety collars can be lost. May 9, 2016 by Julie Yesterday was FEMA’s National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day.
You probably know whether your house is in an especially disaster-prone area, but as the terrible fires in Canada this past week have reminded us, emergencies can happen anywhere, to anyone. Even cats who are normally safe indoors are at a higher risk of being displaced during an evacuation.
Making sure your cat has a microchip with up-to-date information is important, too, since collars can be lost, but a cat can’t drop their microchip. Since both Ashton and Newton eat raw food, the emergency kit includes freeze-dried raw food for them. Dividers inside that let me to organize the enough pouches, freeze-dried food, and paper plates separately for at least five days.
The cats’ Torus travel bowl fits perfectly into the mesh outside pocket on the back of the bag. I shared this pet emergency kit checklist a while back, but I am including it here again to help with your planning. Not everywhere you might go in an evacuation is pet friendly, so it’s a good idea to ask around before you need to find a place to go in an emergency.

Do you have a friend or family member in a nearby region or state who might accommodate you? One of the most unthinkable scenarios is an emergency happening when you aren’t around to get your cats out to safety. We all hope that disaster won’t strike us, but it’s best to be prepared and not need the plan than need a plan and have no idea what to do! November 19, 2015 by Julie This is an encore of a post that previously ran just before the Thansgiving holiday last year. Cats like Pierre are mostly immune to Thanksgiving dinner hazards, but cats like Newton and Ashton will put on their holiday best to be able to share in your Thanksgiving feast. A little taste of boneless, well-cooked turkey is safe for your cat, but hold the stuffing! Articles and images on this site may not be reproduced in whole or in part without written consent. August 7, 2012 By Irresistible Pets 11 Comments Having a Pet First Aid Kit is something that ALL pet owners need to have. The last thing you want to do during an emergency is to go searching around for phone numbers and addresses. I would also recommend purchasing a First-Aid Book for Pets that you can keep inside of your kit. Gauze Pads and Roll – This is to wrap wounds and can serve as a make-shift muzzle if need be. Sterile Saline Eye Solution – To flush out foreign objects in your pet’s eye or to help clean around the eye area.
This is pretty much what we have in Parris and Blue’s first aid kit, but I also have something else in ours. I do animal rescue and I picked up a bottle of dog aspirin to keep in my first aid kit too.
Of course, the key to keeping your pets healthy and safe is being prepared… especially during hurricane season.
Items like crates and carriers, food, bedding, toys and enough medication (if your pet’s on a prescription) to last at least two weeks should be included in this kit.

Enjoy our local coverage of area dining, events, entertainment and other things-to-do in Brevard. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) helped provide emergency shelter and care for more than 8,500 animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina. They can’t do it for themselves and so it is up to you to have an emergency plan in place for your pets. If you think it through and prepare in advance, you will know what to do in order to protect yourself, your family, and your pets. There are a few reasons why it is a good idea to identify friends or relatives that will be willing to care for your pet if you are unable to do so.
Before you find yourself in an emergency situation, pack a pet emergency kit so that you are ready to care for your pet if a disaster hits. Don’t let an emergency or disaster prevent you from caring for or separate you from your pets.
The mainstays of the category a€“ white distilled, cider, wine and malt have now been joined by balsamic, rice, rice wine, raspberry, pineapple, chardonnay, flavored and seasoned vinegars and more.
Vinegar is commonly used in food preparation, particularly in pickling processes, vinaigrettes, and other salad dressings. Popular flavorings are garlic, basil and tarragon - but cinnamon, clove and nutmeg flavored vinegars can be a tasty and aromatic addition to dressings. Raspberry flavored vinegars, for example, create a sweetened vinegar with a sweet-sour taste. We sure hope you’ll find it easier to follow these basic steps instead of trying to tackle all goals all at one time.
It is suggested that you carry a metal pan or cookie sheet or fold a square of tin foil into fourths to set the heater on. I found 2 sites which were showing how to bake in Box Ovens which only required charcoal to heat them.
Each charcoal briquette supplies 35-40 degrees of heat, so 9 briquettes will give us approx 360 degree oven.

Once upon a time, I jumped up on the counter to see if anyone had left any good stuff up there.
If a kitty is indoors, he isn’t going to be hit by a car, attacked by a predator like a coyote, or exposed to disease from other cats.
Spaying and neutering can also help with other behaviors that make some people hesitate to keep their cat indoors, like spraying. They also may not have cats and not be accustomed to closing the door when they go outdoors for just a moment or two.
Even with kitty safely locked up, letting the plumber know that any cat asking to go out should be kept in is safest in you’re your kitty makes an escape from the safe room. Even better, cats enjoy spending time on a screened porch or other catio enclosure where they can be somewhat outdoors but are still kept secure from outdoor hazards.
If you treat it like an airlock where the door to the house is never opened until the screened door is closed, even determined door dashers can’t get outside.
Always transport your cat in a secure carrier, and in the car, don’t open the carrier unless all windows and doors are closed. On hard plastic carriers, screws or clasps that hold the top and bottom halves together can loosen.
Look carefully at the plastic near the carrying handle, by where the door fastens, and where the main parts of the carrier come together to be sure that there are no signs of fatigue in the plastic, and don’t trust them to bear weight if you see damage. This can be frustrating when it happens, but you wouldn’t want just anyone to be able to say they own your cat and take him away.
The two main kinds of identification your cat can carry are a collar and microchip, and they work together to help your cat get home to you. There are many  collars available with breakaway clasps that will release if your cat gets the collar caught on an object or in a fight with another cat. If you or your cat don’t like the traditional, dangling tags, there are many other options, including tags that slide onto the collar and even collars that include your cat’s information stitched on. Animal shelters and veterinarians can scan a lost cat and read the chip, then get the information from the registry to help reunite you to bring your lost cat home again.
Not only do we live in Florida where we need to be ready for hurricane season, but part of the cost of having our beautiful view from our back windows is also living in a 100-year flood plain.
Making sure they have ID can help you be reunited if you are separated during an evacuation. Think about what information is registered with the microchip company and be sure that they will be able to reach you during an evacuation if you and your kitty get separated. Last year, I stored everything in a plastic bin, but I got to thinking about the last time I did anything like an evacuation: a cross-country move.
It also upgrades Pierre’s food from cans as I had in the emergency kit last year to pouches, which weigh less. Having them in nicely divided sections is fun, but but you could put them in any kind of bag that you can carry hands-free. Again, if you had another type of bag, like a backpack, you could keep you water bowl inside. More shelters are making arrangements for them than used to, but be sure to check rather than assume your cat will be welcome there. Our friends at GoPetFriendly have a great listing of pet-friendly accommodations you can use to find a a place to stay during an evacuation. Talk to a trusted friend or neighbor in advance about helping evacuate and meet you with your pets in a safe location away from the disaster.

It’s a time many of us spend with family and friends, and one of the centerpieces of the holiday for most families is the big Thanksgiving dinner. A little taste of your mashed potatoes is all right, but your cat doesn’t need a meal of them.

There are specific items that you may need depending on your pet’s breed and medical history. You can get a detailed description of what to include in this post, Are You Prepared for a Pet Emergency? Children’s Motrin can be used for pain and inflammation but call your vet for dosing instructions. There are only three pet-friendly evacuation shelters in Brevard County: Heritage High School, Port St. Also be sure to have your pet’s medical and vaccination records on-hand along with identification and your contact information that will remain with your pet in case you are separated.

Following Hurricane Sandy, the ASPCA assisted more than 30,000 pets in New York and New Jersey. Before an emergency, make sure you figure out where you will go that is safe for you and your pet. You may not be home when an emergency occurs, so line up a neighbor or friend that can check on and care for your pets. Pack 3-7 days worth of pet food (dry or canned), bottled water, medications, veterinary records, a pet carrier, litter and disposable litter trays, manual can opener, food dishes, first aid kit, and other supplies with you in case they’re not available later.
Make sure identification tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet’s collar. A typical microchip costs around $45, but shelters and organizations often hold events where the cost is much cheaper. The ASPCA stickers are used to make sure rescue workers know that you have pets inside your home, the types of pets, and your vet information. We want you to feel excited about becoming prepared, not overwhelmed and then to finally give up after trying for 2 weeks. Put the can and the rest of the items in a ziploc bag separately so the recipient may pour the alcohol in the can when heat is needed. The story is that one night, I jumped up to help prepare dinner and the head peep started tell me that I was naughty because I had turned on the knob.
Thankfully, he did it while a human was standing right there preparing food, so the gas was turned off before anything dangerous happened. You can use zip ties as a backup security measure to help keep the top and bottom portions of a carrier together in case a screw works loose during transport.
Carrying supplies for the cats while I was also carrying cat carriers up and down motel stairways at midnight isn’t something I wanted to try to do with a big bin, so instead, I have shifted to a bag for most of the supplies. We keep enough on hand that we do store in a bin because one of our stored gallons sprung a leak in the spare bedroom closet last year.
Check the sale aisle of your grocery store the week after the big family-eating holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas to stock up on these aluminum pans for your emergency kit. Your local emergency management agency will have contact information so that you can plan ahead.
Lodging fills up fast when evacuations start, so knowing how to find a place and calling ahead may make a big difference. If they are willing to help you and you are willing to help them in this scenario, both of you have a backup plan for disasters.
Kitties may love the novelty of interesting food smells at the holidays, but share sparingly and keep up their regular diet to avoid upset stomachs. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of the people who refused to leave their homes after Hurricane Katrina were staying to care for their pets, and over 600,000 pets were killed or left without shelter. Find out which hotels are pet-friendly, and make sure you look into hotels in your community (for short-term needs) and hotels out-of-town that are pet-friendly in case you have to evacuate. Also, ask friends and relatives outside of your immediate area if they would be willing to take in your pet should you have to evacuate. Pet-friendly shelters, kennels, or boarding facilities that you arrange ahead of time will need to be able to identify your pet and know your pet’s medical history.
That way you will have it to use for sanitation and not have to use precious drinking water Cooking, washing dishes, cleaning, personal hygiene, etc. I had messenger-style bag that Solv-It had sent me last year during a miscommunication in which they thought I was a dog blogger, so I grabbed it and started to restock.
This bag has pockets for things like a thumb drive that is of photos of the cats and critical veterinary information like proof of recent vaccines that might be necessary if the cats have to be boarded unexpectedly. Similarly, pumpkin, which vets recommend for feline constipation, isn’t the same thing as a pumpkin pie full of spices. I find that way I can put exactly what I want and need inside of the kit….and save some money!
They are only open to people in the mandatory evacuation areas and you must have current county tags and proof of vaccinations for each pet to be allowed in. Contact your vet for a list of boarding kennels and facilities that will be open to taking pets in an emergency.   Does your local animal shelter provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets? Conference or when you change your clocks.) After sitting for a while water will taste flat.
Such a can may be used for the emergency storage of body wastes until the public sewage system can be put back into action, or until other arrangements can be made.
Copies of vet records can also serve as proof of ownership, and they are also useful in case your cat is lost and is in the hands of a veterinarian who wants to know his history. My thumb drive also includes written instructions on meals, but you could include that information about medications, too.
Consider holding a little pumpkin aside when making your pie if you want to share with your kitty.
Some hotels will allow pets, but it is important that you confirm the pet policy in advance as part of your preparation planning. Pets most likely cannot survive on their own, and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
Check the label of your favorite vinegar product to determine the nutrition information for that product. You can also check with your veterinarian’s office and boarding facilities to see if they offer boarding services during mandatory evacuations (like Young’s Animal Hospital in Titusville offers for established clients). Many remedies and treatments have been ascribed to vinegar over millennia and in many different cultures, however, few have been verifiable using controlled medical trials and many that are effective to some degree have significant side effects and carry the possibility of serious health risks.
We hope you have fun while filling it out and putting your car kit together with your families.
