Wind technology is adaptable and versatile and can be one of the most cost-competitive renewable energy technologies when produced on a large scale (wind farm).
A very well built DIY horizontal axis wind turbine would not likely get more than 65% of the above numbers. Wind turbines can be used to produce electricity for a single home or building, or they can be connected to an electricity grid (shown here) for more widespread electricity distribution. Modern wind turbines fall into two basic groups: the horizontal-axis variety, as shown in the photo, and the vertical-axis design, like the eggbeater-style Darrieus model, named after its French inventor. Utility-scale turbines range in size from 100 kilowatts to as large as several megawatts. Single small turbines, from 400 watts to 100 kilowatts, are used for homes, farms, telecommunications dishes, or water pumping.
Darrieus' 1927 patent also covered machines with straight vertical axis blades called Giromills.
VAWTs have not performed well in the commercial wind turbine market though a number of smaller, household sized units have recently hit the market. You will be contacted by up to three, independent, trusted solar system suppliers shortly (usually within 48 hours). Last updated August 14, 2013 by Mathias Aarre Maehlum What are the benefits of grid-connected solar panels vs. Grid-tied, on-grid, utility-interactive, grid intertie and grid backfeeding are all terms used to describe the same concept – a solar system that is connected to the utility power grid.
Batteries, and other stand-alone equipment, are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system and add to costs as well as maintenance. Your solar panels will often generate more electricity than what you are capable of consuming.
Net metering (or feed-in tariff schemes in some countries) play an important role in how solar power is incentivized.
Many utility companies are committed to buying electricity from homeowners at the same rate as they sell it themselves. The electric power grid is in many ways also a battery, without the need for maintenance or replacements, and with much better efficiency rates.
According to EIA data[1], national, annual electricity transmission and distribution losses average about 7% of the electricity that is transmitted in the United States. Additional perks of being grid-tied include access to backup power from the utility grid (in case your solar system stop generating electricity for one reason or another). There are a few key differences between the equipment needed for grid-tied, off-grid and hybrid solar systems. In addition to this, grid-tie inverters, also known as grid-interactive or synchronous inverters, synchronize the phase and frequency of the current to fit the utility grid (nominally 60Hz). Micro-inverters go on the back of each solar panel, as opposed to one central inverter that typically takes on the entire solar array. There has recently been a lot of debate on whether micro-inverters are better than central (string) inverters. Micro-inverters are certainly more expensive, but in many cases yield higher efficiency rates.
Most homeowners will need to replace their current power meter with one that is compatible with net metering. You should consult with your local utility company and see what net metering options you have.
An off-grid solar system (off-the-grid, standalone) is the obvious alternative to one that is grid-tied. To ensure access to electricity at all times, off-grid solar systems require battery storage and a backup generator (if you live off-the-grid). On the flip side, batteries can only store a certain amount of energy, and during cloudy times, being connected to the grid is actually where the security is. Good charge controllers are crucial for keeping the batteries healthy, which ensures the lifetime of a battery bank is maximized.
There`s no need for an inverter if you`re only setting up solar panels for your boat, your RV, or something else that runs on DC current. Off-grid inverters do not have to match phase with the utility sine wave as opposed to grid-tie inverters.
It takes a lot of money and big batteries to prepare for several consecutive days without the sun shining (or access to the grid).

In most cases, installing a backup generator that runs on diesel is a better choice than investing in an oversized battery bank that seldom gets to operate at it`s full potential. Backup generators typically output AC, which can be sent through the inverter for direct use, or it can be converted into DC for battery storage.
If you own a grid-tied solar system and drive a vehicle that runs on electricity, you already kind of have a hybrid setup. Solar panels happen to output the most electrical power at noon – not long before the price of electricity peaks.
Consequently, you can temporarily store whatever excess electricity your solar panels in batteries, and put it on the utility grid when you are paid the most for every kWh. Now my idea is to build a system that stands alone, but have the flexibility to switch over to utility power when we run out of juice. I can’t find any resources that could support my idea, therefore I am afraid that I am missing some basic information that makes this system unusable.
The way I understand your system it is scaled to never generate more electricity than what you need on a day-to-day basis and therefore you save money by not needing a big battery bank. Would it be reasonable to just install the standard hybrid system with a little more battery capacity and also divert energy to some usefull work that can be used later?
Maybe you could supply free hot water to all of your neighbors instead of giving the grid free power! Install a driveway heating system just for use when the sun is producing more than you can use.
In response to your comments to Shady Abeid, Most grid owners will definitely be loosing more and wont agree to this connection.
I was wondering what do you suggest is the most expensive system component apart from the solar cells. Is there a solar system that runs like an off grid system that only utilizes the grid when the storage batteries run low? When you get an answer to your question, could you forward it to me, if unable to, tell me the gist of it?
I’m an apprentice electrician in Queensland, the company I work for is looking for a system such as Johnny is asking about.
I am also working on some ideas to apply hybrid solar technology for our small wastewater treatment systems. Other than that I am an avid researcher of Alternative Energy Technologies and Alternative Propulsion Systems. The reason why I am contacting all of you is because i want to design, implement and market a product which will make solar power a cost-effective viable option for everyone to use. Presently the solar power products sold in the market demands a higher battery bank capacity for supporting larger loads for longer time and solar power is used ONLY FOR CHARGING OF BATTERY BANK and not powering AC loads directly. Then I searched more vigorously and found this blog and i am thrilled that I am not alone in this thought process of wanting to make a high-efficiency direct conversion solar power system. I have a very good concept for the Solar-Mains Hybrid Power System to design it from scratch and I also know the exact parametric design methodology to ensure the highest possible efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this system.
We have come a long way from the older times, where solar power generators are more of an affordable power solution. A user supplied DC relay can be energized during the 30 day generator exercise to override a battery charger and allow the generator to stop in an emergency situation such as a fuel spill. For these reasons, it is imperative to know how to turn a circuit breaker off in order to safely work on a project. To charge the battery(s), you can connect solar panels, or a grid or generator connected charger. SSGs receive heat transfer fluid emergency generator and auxiliary boiler for the first source group and the firepump and .
Don't put yourself in a position where you may building your very own portable solar backup generator that you can store in your emergency kit. Smaller systems work very well when combined with a solar array, as cloudy days are often windy and a hot sunny day may not contain a steady breeze. We will give examples for 2 small turbines, one with 2 foot blades and one with 4 foot blades. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more above ground, they can take advantage of faster and less turbulent wind. Larger turbines are grouped together into wind farms, which provide bulk power to the electrical grid. Small turbines are sometimes used in connection with diesel generators, batteries, and photovoltaic systems. Fact: Domestic cats and flying into windows, kills hundreds of millions of birds each year.
The three-cup anemometers commonly used for measuring wind speed are drag-based vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). The long VAWT blades have many natural frequencies of vibration which must be avoided during operation. They also impose a large thrust loading on the main turbine bearings and bearing selection is critical. Let`s look closer at the benefits and downsides of grid-tied, off-grid and hybrid solar systems. With net metering, homeowners can put this excess electricity onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries.
Without it, residential solar systems would be much less feasible from a financial point of view. In other words, more electricity (and more money) goes to waste with conventional battery systems. Lead-acid batteries, which are commonly used with solar panels, are only 80-90% efficient at storing energy, and their performance degrades with time. The output voltage is also adjusted slightly higher than the grid voltage in order for excess electricity to flow outwards to the grid. Homeowners who are suspect to shading issues should definitely look into if micro-inverters are better in their situation. This device, often called a net meter or a two-way meter, is capable of measuring power going in both directions, from the grid to your house and vice versa.

In some places, the utility company issues a power meter for free and pay full price for the electricity you generate; however, this is not always the case. For homeowners that have access to the grid, off-grid solar systems are usually out of question. The last term is probably the best to describe what this device actually does: Solar battery chargers limit the rate of current being delivered to the battery bank and protect the batteries from overcharging. If you have a battery-based inverter, chances are that the charge controller is integrated. For off-grid solar systems, one additional DC disconnect is installed between the battery bank and the off-grid inverter.
Electrical current flows from the solar panels through the solar charge controller and the bank battery bank before it is finally converted into AC by the off-grid-inverter.
These systems can either be described as off-grid solar with utility backup power, or grid-tied solar with extra battery storage.
You don`t really need a backup generator, and the capacity of your battery bank can be downsized.
New inverters let homeowners take advantage of changes in the utility electricity rates throughout the day.
Your home and electrical vehicle can be programmed to consume power during off-peak hours (or from your solar panels). The concept will become increasingly important as we transition towards the smart grid in the coming years.
These devices combine can draw electrical power to and from battery banks, as well as synchronize with the utility grid. First of all I graduated last year with master in renewable energy from Warsaw university of technology.
Now in order to have grid tied or hybrid system you need to know that your utility company will buy the excess energy otherwise you will b dumbing this energy for free in the grid right? The system that I am thinking of should be sized to provide all the energy that a house needs during the best irradiation day in the year. I think it sounds reasonable, but a system like this could only cover a tiny of a household’s yearly electricity needs.
Some kind of machine that does work like pumping water to garden area or extra air conditioning or heating in a room you usually don’t use.
Problem I see is that electricity can run from grid (3) into power meter for solar plant (1). Once you read my posts you will understand that i have the similar concept as you mentioned. My aim is to make solar is the primary source and the grid is the secondary source for my loads. With the current buying price of energy being so high and feed in price being so low, we need a system that can charge a battery bank for the house to use during peak hours, feed back to the grid once the battery bank is full and also connect back to the grid when the bank is nearly empty. I have tried contacting some mass production centers in Mainland China for mass producing my concept according to the excellent design specifications i have made, but none are yet up to the point of being able to understand the efficiency of the direct energy conversion system such as the one I am talking about. The only problem with the picture on this link is that the system feeds overproducing electricity back on the grid. My panels chanrge my batteries and run half my home, if the batteries go to 30% DoC then the inverter switches automatically over to Eskum.. It’s fairly inexpensive to maintain and service, but does not yield the same amount of electricity as many of the others forms of Generators ( fuel into power). Home solar power units are supplied by us and installed within record time in order to save you time, thus saving you money!
The Betz Limit tells us that the maximum percentage of power we can harvest from the wind is 59.26%. These systems are called hybrid wind systems and are typically used in remote, off-grid locations, where a connection to the utility grid is not available. If the velocity of the cups is exactly the same as the wind speed, we can say that the instrument is operating with a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 1.
Like all types of turbines, replacing main bearings requires that the turbine be taken down.
Deciding whether or not to grid-tie your solar panels is usually pretty straightforward – the clear-cut benefits of being grid-tied appeals to the majority of homeowners. Direct current (DC) from your solar panels is converted into alternating current (AC), which is the type of current that is utilized by the majority of electrical appliances. I work currently in the UK, but very soon will be returning to Poland as my employer is going under. There must be one way only connection and I doubt grid operator will allow that connection. Well, In my place power blackout occurs so often and here it’s not possible to deploy grid tied solar system. You get wind turbines manufactured in manyvertical and horizontal types these days, but you do need to live in the right area in order to get the benifits of Wind Power!
Most Solar power generators for Business use and home use is quiet, runs in the low risk factor and can be managed by yourself and maintained as well.
This is important for maintenance, troubleshooting and protection against electrical fires.
The reason is that we have to build a very large system to provide enough power during winter.
Im trying to find an inverter with an intern switch, that can use my power from my panels and batteries. Both solar power and wind power is deamed to be intermitted engery, thus you either need to use the energy immediatly or you need to store the energy for future use.You can also use Solare Power and Wind Power in easy to transport units for events or for when needed, but some preventative measures should be taken ( you need to store energy first). I want to use energy from solar for my home appliances as well as charging battery banks also.
