The French know a thing or two about cramming tons of practicality and sensibility into a reasonably compact MPV. The previous generation 3008 was an average car, but for me was let down primarily by its anonymous styling.
With that practicality, standard specification and strong engine, I'd like to believe the Peugeot 3008 is a competent car.
There has been some minor restyling and the space saver spare is now carries in a cradles under the load floor, giving more loadspace.
The basic model might have an almost shockingly low list price but it does without some essentials like a radio and air con. A low purchase price, reasonable running costs and a practical design mean that the Duster can overcome its technological and dynamic shortcomings. In Summer 2016 The Dacia Duster was massively improved by a facelift and the adoption of Renault's twin cam 1.2 litre petrol engine, designated TCe 125 in the Duster. Having jumped straight out of the very powerful, very fast Audi RS Q3 and directly into this less powerful Audi S3 Sedan, I may have thought at one stage I was downscaling or going to be left wanting more.
The Audi S3 Sedan is a quick car and considering it hasn’t had the full RS treatment yet, makes you wonder just how fast Audi is going to make that RS3 when they ever get around to it. Combine that with torque of 380 Nm that’s available for an unbelievably long period (1 800-5 500 rpm) and Audi’s fast shifting S-Tronic gearbox and you’ve got a pleasing array of figures to enjoy. Audi S-models have never struggled for speed though, if anything it’s in the handling and fun department that they could work on, at that’s where this S3 Sedan comes into its own. It’s an addictive sound, I found myself using the paddle shifters more often than usual, snapping the upshift paddle like a Formula 1 driver. The rest of the interior’s functionality is dealt with via the multimedia interface and the centre console scroller. I was finding it hard to fault this S3 Sedan and I may even have let slip that this would be a really cool birthday present for my upcoming name day. At R529 500 the sedan may be a R10 000 more expensive than the five-door S3 Sportback, but I’d pick the sedan purely on the improved looks and that great side profile.
Ashley has been riding or driving some sort of motorised vehicle since his 4th birthday when he got a Yamaha PW50. In a few days’ time the 2014 FIFA World Cup gets underway in Brazil and right now in South Africa, Hyundai is launching the Grand version of its i10. The entry-level market segment of new cars is set to keep on growing here as long as fuel prices remain under such pressure.  In other words, A-segment appeal is likely to broaden and still include first-time owners, but woo a big chunk of The Establishment away from the likes of three-box sedans. Yet, when buying down, these customers still want all the comfort accoutrements that they’ve been used to when enjoying a more sophisticated but thirstier example of personal mobility. Fuel economy has been in the news lately regarding manufacturers’ claims and what car owners are actually achieving out there in the real world.
Our test drive included some urban commuting as well as highway driving, and what we noticed with the Hyundai Grand i10 is that the overall gearing of the car is perfectly pitched at what South African’s are likely to encounter in real-world conditions. This rev-range is perfectly pitched to enable the Grand i10 to ascend most highway hills in top gear, and on a light throttle opening at the speed limit.
Talking of gear change action, the shift on the Grand i10 was a little notchy, and the clutch action on the car we tried was weirdly light. Upholstery on our launch-preview model was of a particularly rugged, ribbed fabric material, quite smart, with a shiny finish. Interestingly, the Motion model comes complete with all the must-have features in this ever more demanding market segment. Rear seat accommodation is adequate for large adults, but the boot space is only moderately good for a car in this bracket, measuring 256 litres. Well, the Grand version of Hyundai’s entry-level A-segment car could well turn out to be a marketing masterstroke of similar proportions. Providing you with the latest motoring news, new car releases and the simplest way to buy and sell cars.
With new offerings arriving on the market on an almost monthly basis, the compact crossover segment is quickly becoming a crowded place. The Opel Mokka was first launched in Europe in 2012, so in reality is half-way through its lifecycle already. Perhaps as a result of its platform age, the Mokka’s dimensions seem slightly out of step with the latest market arrivals. Happily, the relatively compact dimensions have not resulted in what can be labelled a cramped cabin, even though cabin width is noticeably less than some rivals.
Other highlights include heated front seats, park assist, cruise control and even a heated steering wheel.
Powering the Mokka is Opel’s trusty 1,4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 103 kW and 200 Nm of torque. Then again, this car isn’t aimed at boy-racers and most owners will find its blend of performance and tractability sufficient. Partly due to its compact dimensions, but also impacted by a relatively firm suspension set-up and the low-profile tyres, the Mokka feels stable and planted on the road, even when said road becomes twisty.
On a longer trip with four passengers and a packed boot, the Mokka performed better than expected. The Mokka is not a cheap vehicle and its price puts it among bigger rivals that on paper may appear to offer better value for money. Opel's Mokka is a great vehicle which slots in nicely between the likes of Ford's EcoSport and the bigger and pricier Hyundai IX35.
With the ultimate goal of spending his life writing about cars, Hannes studied journalism at the University of Stellenbosch. Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has announced its nominated dealers who will become fully functioning Mitsubishi EV Sales Centres from January 2011. The nominated EV Sales Centre personnel will undertake an extensive training programme so that there is not only a very clear understanding of the demands and requirements of electric vehicles for consumers but also so that they understand the wider industry issues relating to the EV marketplace. The 13 authorised EV Sales Centres including the Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle Centre in London, are listed below. The information contained this Mitsubishi i-MiEV news article may have changed since publication on the 10 January 2011. The new revised Audi A1 and A1 Sportback range goes on sale at the end of the month, with the first cars being delivered spring 2015. Rather than a new model, the 2015 A1 line-up has been given a makeover with a number of styling revisions, revised equipment levels and new or improved engines.
The exterior revisions focus on a new front grille, new front and rear bumper designs, new front and rear lighting, new door sills, a revised alloy wheel range and a new colour palette.
There will be a choice of five-speed or six-speed manual transmissions across the range with the 1.6 TDI having the option of a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch automatic transmission. Core equipment across the range includes alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display. The Sport editions adds the Audi Music Interface with prep for the SD card-based navigation, 16-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, sports seats, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation and a Driver's Information System.

The S line models come with xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, exclusive S line exterior styling and interior detailing, S line sports suspension and leather and cloth combination upholstery. You can add the Tech pack which now includes Audi connect, Audi Music Interface and MMI navigation with a 40GB hard drive for mapping data and music storage with a higher resolution colour monitor. The Comfort pack adds a Driver's Information System, high beam assist, cruise control, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and rear parking sensors for parking, auto-on headlights and wipers. The information contained this Audi A1 news article may have changed since publication on the 24 November 2014. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is a far cry from the brands' last effort at a small 'coupe' - the CLC. Three petrol and two diesel engines are available and perhaps the best of these is the C220 CDI. At the other end of the scale there’s also a range-topping C63 AMG Coupe, with a 458PS V8 that produces 600Nm of torque, all the while sounding like thunder interspersed with the odd firing of a distant piece of artillery. The Isuzu KB Serengeti Special Edition features a bumper guard and side steps with silver accents.
On the inside, a combination of brushed silver, chrome and black trim give this special edition model an exclusive feel.
Isuzu KB Serengeti Special Edition is powered by the proven 3.0-litre D-TEQ diesel engine which offers 130 kW and 380 Nm of torque.
Gero Lilleike is a published writer and photographer with most of his work appearing in the fields of travel and motoring. Peugeot launched its facelifted 3008 earlier in 2014 and we spent a week with the top of the range 2.0 HDi Allure model. The 2014 model has been substantially upgraded in the visual department and the redesigned front features all-new headlights with daytime running lights.
Combined with a six-speed automatic gearbox, the Peugeot 3008 offers up 120 kW and a hefty 340 Nm of torque. Not only is there is a double-tiered boot, but all the seats including the front passenger can be folded flat.
This is the range-topping Allure model, but there is a lesser model, the Active available from R334 000. This vehicle was clearly designed for European-style smooth roads, but on our South African roads the Peugeot offers acceptable ride quality. It is and if you're after a clever and practical car, you could do no wrong in investigating this car. There are loads of storage boxes, the seats all fold flat and the centre console resembles the Kimberly Hole. It isn't the sharpest car to drive, nor does it pack in the most luxurious materials or the best levels of equipment.
It’s only offered in white with black bumpers, which does nothing for its looks so moving up to a mid level Ambiante or the top Laureate is more sensible plus they come with the advantage of a frugal, tractable diesel engine. In reality very few people will need it, but for rural buyers it’s a very affordable way to get behind the wheel of a 4x4.
Not at all, this Audi S3 Sedan had me sold after just a few kilometres of driving it from collection.
0-100 kph in the S3 Sedan is dealt with in a face slapping 5-seconds flat thanks to the 206 kW, two-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor. It’s exciting to drive right from the moment you hear the bark of the exhaust as the gearbox cracks another gear to attention. As much as the rip of the gearbox shift is exciting so is the handling when you get it onto a nice long stretch of twisty tarmac. The S3 Sedan feels low and controllable, there’s an abundance of grip from the chassis and tyres as you swing the S3 from side to side. It’s not laced with buttons everywhere but rather keeps all the functions simple with a few buttons for the dual zone climate control adjustments. It’s planted on the road and urges you on to go faster, it’s backed up by a fast acting S-Tronic gearbox and a banging exhaust note on shifts. It's exceptionally comfortable and offers luxury quality, with great performance just a stab of the right foot away.
Crushed by the expense of motor racing, Ashley took up journalism and became a writer for some of South Africa’s best motoring magazines and online publications. Four years ago in South Africa, Hyundai was the vehicle sponsor when our country hosted the world’s soccer show piece, and if you speak to the Korean company’s executives today, they will tell you that it was the best bit of brand awareness marketing they’ve ever done here, harking way back to Hyundai’s SA debut in the mid-1990s.
Around town, there is plenty of urge available for quick acceleration away from the traffic lights, again not using full throttle.
This light action resulted in no feel, making smooth getaways a chore that required lots of concentration.
More important, perhaps, is the feeling of overall maturity and quality that the Koreans have injected into the body shell of the Hyundai Grand i10. But the equipment levels on the Grand are very good in both models launched, these being the base-line Motion model and the slightly better-equipped Fluid model. Thus there is standard air-conditioning, electric window operation, a standard RCD radio with CD and MP3 compatibility, an on-board driving-function computer and central locking. But the biggest ownership-experience factor is likely to be the level of understated sophistication you’ll enjoy with this car. Opel’s offering, the Mokka, was recently added to the mix and adds to the confusion – size-wise it not only straddles the B (Renault Captur, Nissan Juke etc.) and C (Hyundai ix35, Toyota RAV4) segments, but also attempts to offer technologies and features typically packaged into pricier and bigger vehicles, into a slightly more affordable, and more compact body. Nevertheless, it is an attractive vehicle with compact, muscular styling that is enhanced by the generous specification of this Cosmo variant – striking 18-inch wheels are standard, for example.
Opel’s interior designers have fitted the seats quite high for that towering SUV feel, and this has consequently created quite a lot of foot space for rear passengers.
As the Mokka is of a slightly older design, the facia is littered with buttons and some of those are very small too. The seats, by the way, are superb, offering manual height adjustment as well as electric lumbar and cushion length adjustment. No surprise then, that the Opel Mokka achieved a full five stars in EuroNCAP crash testing. It is only when a more hurried approach is adopted that some irritations become noticeable.
We wonder, however, whether most owners wouldn’t appreciate a slightly more forgiving ride, especially at low speeds and on poorer surfaces. The cabin is a quiet and comfortable place, with especially wind and road noise being blocked out well.
A brief stint as a sports editor for Paarl Post followed, before he joined CAR magazine in 2001. By 10th January 2010 the approved dealerships will have 2 fully trained sales personnel in the Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) and they will also have a broader understanding of future Mitsubishi pure EV and plug-in hybrid technologies. Their after-sales departments will also comply with compulsory manufacturer training and require specialist tools to enable the service and maintenance of electric vehicles.
From spring of 2015 there will be a new entry level A1 - the 1.0 TFSI with prices starting at A?14,315, with the first cars being delivered in the summer.

The S1 range now comes with Audi Music Interface and navigation preparation which is in line with Sport and S line versions. It is possible to select the comfort suspension on all models, and increase the ride height on the S line. For starters it's a much more attractive design with a classic coupe silhouette - there's the long bonnet, short front overhang and a low sloping roofline. All cars are fitted with the AMG Sport package as standard, which features a flat-bottomed steering wheel, light alloy wheels, speed-sensitive sports steering, sports suspension and paddle-shifters if you go for the an automatic. The new special edition model follows on from the success of the Midnite Edition which was launched last year.
Just as Isuzu’s toughness and reliability are legendary and well known to those who seek the ultimate adventure, the special edition reflects the essence of resilience of the brand. The B-pillar has been blacked out and this model also comes equipped with silver roof rails, a chrome sports bar and towbar. The Serengeti Special Edition carpets and chrome door sill plates further distinguishes it from other Isuzu models. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission for the 4x2 derivative, while the 4x4 derivative makes use of a 5-speed manual transmission only. Gero has worked in the motoring space for the last four years and enjoys driving and photographing the latest cars. However the super practical Peugeot 3008 is unfortunately undone by its fellow Frenchman, the Citroen C4 Picasso, which offers smarter technology, a more frugal engine and a substantially cheaper price tag. For the same price as a small hatchback you can get a full-sized family car with an economical diesel engine and the option of all-wheel drive.
But it’s honest, unpretentious, solidly built and spacious enough for a family, with a boot that puts some larger cars to shame and enough rear leg and headroom for teenagers. It’s a stunner to look at, fast enough to keep your heart rate escalated and just enough fun in the corners to keep the inner racer interested. Above that there’s one row of buttons for traction control settings and the Drive Select option – it allows you to change the car’s personality through eco, comfort, auto, individual and dynamic settings. It’s also comfortable to drive over long distance and has a well-equipped and beautifully finished interior. The exterior styling has a nod to funkiness while leaning towards conservatism, while the interior has a grown-up feel to it that is remarkable in a car costing just under R140 000. The dashboard and door capping materials used are of a higher perceived quality levels than what you are likely to expect in a car in this price range. The Fluid model gets rear-window electric operation, remote wing mirror adjustment, heated wing mirrors, and one-touch auto-down window operation. Interestingly, it's not based on the Corsa, as most people would assume, but uses the General Motors Gamma II platform that also underpins the Chevrolet Sonic. Most concerning, however, is the wheelbase, which at 2 555 mm appears to be very stubby and could impact on rear legroom. The boot is claimed to swallow a handy 356 L-worth of luggage, and can be expanded to 785 L by folding the rear seats down.
Opel has made much of its premium ambitions in the past few years, and the results are very obvious in the Mokka. It therefore takes a while to familiarise oneself with all the features (there are so many).
The engine offers good theoretical flexibility, as the torque is available from 1 850 to 4 000 rpm.
When the throttle is pushed to the floor, the transmission can be a little slow at times to react, and when it does it generally sends the revs soaring by selecting too low a gear.
The cabin is cleverly packaged to offer a blend of comfort, features, technology and quality that most rivals will struggle to match.
He eventually became the (youngest-ever) editor of CAR in 2011, a position he occupied for two years. All of Mitsubishi's 118 UK dealerships will be appointed as EV Service Centre's as of 10th January 2010 giving national after-sales coverage.
You may wish to check with the manufacturer or your local Mitsubishi dealer, before making a purchasing decision. And there is a new suspension option which includes adjustable dampers on the Sport models and above. You may wish to check with the manufacturer or your local Audi dealer, before making a purchasing decision.
There are also styling tweaks including metal pedals and restyled front and rear aprons and sideskirts. The new SERENGETI Special Edition has the looks and appeal to attract attention on the road and set its owners apart from the rest,” says General Motors South Africa Isuzu Brand Manager, Mlungisi Nonkonyana. The Isuzu KB Serengeti Special Edition rides on 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with all-terrain tyres. I did note that the gearbox often liked to change down a ratio which was not always required, but driving it in manual mode means you're in full control - something I prefer anyway. The steering is nicely weighted at higher speeds and though lacks out-and-out feedback, it never leaves you feeling anything but in control. The boot space is quite generous too, although it does compromise a little on the rear legroom. Yes, the overall layout still tends to lean towards the conservative side of the spectrum, but there’s no denying the feeling of well-being that comes with noticing high-end levels of panel fit. Chevrolet itself offers a very similar vehicle called the Trax, which is unlikely to come to South Africa for obvious reasons.
Interestingly, my usual test equipment (a three-wheeled urban stroller pram) couldn't fit in lengthwise as the boot was too short.
There’s a real quality look and feel to the trim materials, including the shiny bits, and the plastics and leather surfaces are soft to the touch where needed. On the other hand, the fitment of a properly up-to-date IntelliLink infotainment system, which allows the Mokka to connect to Apple iOS and Android smartphones, is a major boon.
On the road the Mokka is indeed an enthusiastic sprinter, and should be nippier in most circumstances than its rivals from Mitsubishi and Nissan, which both offer less torque and CVTs (continuously variable transmissions).
All cars feature the new electromechanical power steering setup which promises more accurate steering and feedback. We drove the Mokka on some very poor surfaces, too, and there was not a rattle or squeak to be heard.
Although some families may find it a bit too compact, we think it will do well as an offering that appeals in equal measure to the head and the heart. You may NOT reproduce our car news in full or part, in any format without our written permission.
