It’s possible to take free or paid piano online lessons and truly learn the rudiments of piano playing. There are a lot piano lessons for children online (and even for adults) that have been proven affective. Some seek online piano lesson help because they are entry-level students, and they want to learn how to play the piano without requiring the student to read notes. A piano lesson online usually offer the fundamental steps in learning how to play the instrument. It is best to have a MIDI or an actual keyboard (acoustic or electronic) if you want to take piano lessons online.
In most online piano lessons the instructions will naturally progress to playing with the left hand. I emerged with an armful of resources, ready to spend the next week planning out my very first lesson with the precision of a military general. I was determined to create the perfect lesson without a single wasted minute. Flash forward a week later, and I was sitting beside a 6 year old who wanted to debate the virtues of puffy vs. So, remembering the connection I myself had with my own piano teacher, I abandoned my original plan. She learned that I too loved pickles, and that I learned to braid my hair from the babysitter I had when I was 10.
As I debriefed later that day on whether or not the lesson was a success or utter failure, I received an email from her mother. Trevor and I love creating practice materials that are absolutely, positively, most definitely, NOT BORING! I have intuitively used first lessons to build relationship and believe it is absolutely KEY to continued and profitable piano study with my students!
I thought at first that you had to go in order in the method book, starting with the first lesson. Great instincts Lillian ?? Yes, it really is all about setting up the “friendly framework” for the future! Piano Adventures, the beloved series by Nancy and Randall Faber, is now available in a 2nd edition. The Primer Level begins as it did in the first edition but there is an updated table of contents that spans two pages.
Moving along to Level One, the beginning was refined to help with a smoother transition for students who are coming from My First Piano Adventures Book C. The theory books were changed to correlate more with the Lesson book, both in artwork and material. Congratulations to Nancy and Randall Faber, production coordinator Jon Ophoff, and the rest of the team for this successful new edition of Piano Adventures! Thanks to ComposeCreate, my friend Wendy Stevens’ blog, I discovered that Anne has started a brand new blog,  PianoAntics, where you can see more of her creativity in action.
Recently she blogged about a  new recording gadget for an iPhone, complete with an audio of her performance of a Bach prelude. You might have seen this game last year, but I am posting it again for teachers new to this site. As an aside, and coming from a music education specialist,  *quarter, quarter, two eighths, quarter*, is the easiest rhythm pattern for children to clap.
Here are some more Easter season activities from my website, including two composing activities for beginners. There are several different ways to learn to play keyboard: you can learn keyboard from online courses, instructional DVDs or simply picking keys at the keyboard to teach yourself.

You can look into signing up for one of these, and youa€™ll be getting a very solid background in music education because the teachers are professional, and have learned to play their instrument of choice.
Likely youa€™ll fare the best if you look at a music store or university, but no matter what you choose, therea€™s going to be a way to learn how to play keyboard from an experienced teacher in your area. You can watch them as many times as you like, so that you can take in all the valuable tips! Some approaches introduce basic music notations such as time signatures, rhythm, tempo, rests, staff and clefs as first steps in the process of learning to play the keyboard. The best online piano lessons take the route of starter studies where the black and white keys of a keyboard are introduced.
The black keys could either be sharp (#) or flat (b) depending on its relation to the key of the music. Then, simple songs played by both hands will be introduced where the right hand plays the melody and the left hand the accompaniment in the form of single notes or chords.
However, each level is not as comprehensive as those given by actual piano teacher teachers.
As one progresses more complicated music and songs are introduced to students with simplified arrangements. I also remember my mad dash thirty minutes later to the local music store where I sorted wildly through an array of method books. And following the lesson, my new student’s head would be filled with everything those method books told me she needed to know. She wasn’t poorly behaved… she was simply infatuated with the fact that she had my undivided attention… for 1800 seconds.
We explored what she needed to know in order to practice something in the coming week, all the while getting to know each other. Without a strong initial bond, everything you teach (or attempt to teach) becomes ten times more difficult as you struggle to catch your students’ attention, motivation and interest. If your focus is on relationship building, then let that take precedence, and ease off the idea that your students need to learn absolutely everything on Day 1. Obviously you are passionate about the piano… so now is the perfect time to pass on some of that exuberance to your students. Good practice habits start from the very first moment your students’ fingers touch the keys. And one of our most popular resources, Shhh… Your Piano Teacher Thinks This Is Practice contains 88 such activities. By that time you and your students will have built a strong working relationship and your students will be connected to their lessons and excited about learning music.
In the comments below we’d love to hear about anything you wished someone would have told you before teaching your very first lesson. My mentor teacher started kids playing twinkle or Old MacDonald in the first lesson by skipping ahead, and the kids loved it.
For instance I never really thought of the significance of a kid having an adults undivided attention for that long. It’s rare for a child to have undivided attention from an adult that is uninterrupted and 100% focussed on just them. It really helps to remember that the first lesson doesn’t have to be about getting as much material as possible in to show how great a teacher you are and how every second needs to be filled with educating the student. What I truly need to do is stop caring about these perceptions and just do what I know is best (after all, they DO hire me as the ‘expert’) and hope they trust me enough to not throw the towel in too soon! For that reason I started connecting with the parent for a few minutes before engaging at the first lesson. Each piece is listed in a table that shows the correlating pages in the Theory, Technique, Performance, and Sightreading books.  Sight-reading! For example, in The I Like Song, the keyboard finger graphic was enlarged and moved to a more prominent position. Throughout, some of the Discovery and other creative elements at the bottom of the pages are different. The title to Russian Sailor Dance was changed to Russian Folk Song, using the words from My First Piano Adventures to help with the dotted half note rhythm. She is a fine composer, artist,  crafter,  web designer,  computer animator, video maker,  piano teacher, and performer. Anne shares my passion that teaching music is more effective and fun if students use manipulatives and hands-on activities. Everything she does is top-notch, and if you have never checked out the material on her website,  you’re really missing out. You will have to print on both sides, so be sure to adjust your printer settings carefully before you start. However, many people choose to seek out a keyboard teacher for private lessons, both for the experience and the face-to-face instruction.
Talk to them and ask them about how they teach, what fee youa€™ll pay, and how often you plan to meet.
Know about the schoola€™s admissions policy, because you will technically be a student albeit even if ita€™s not in the normal sense. All it takes is some resourcefulness on your part and knowing where to look for instruction. For a starter student, looking at an 88-key piano could easily translate into a lot of notes to learn.

However, you can make a cardboard version of a keyboard initially if your intention is to learn the black and white keys first. If you want to take a piano keyboard lesson online keep in mind that an advance pianoforte student under a legitimate teacher is much more skilled than an online advanced piano student.
And while she was happy to flip through the first few pages of her new book, she really wanted to know… how I braided my hair. Over “bits” of piano teaching, I learned that she was afraid of snakes, that she had a best friend who had just moved away, that her favorite food was pickles and that her brother was sent to the principal’s office for making duck noises in class.
Your “first lesson action plan” should focus on learning as much about your students as possible and enjoying the time you spend together. You only have one opportunity to make a great (and lasting) first impression.
In fact, more than one lesson spent on those all-important initial concepts can actually result in a deeper understanding of foundational knowledge, resulting in fewer problems down the road. Avoid making the mistake of assuming your students won’t want to practice; inadvertently passing on the perception of practice as being tedious or something they will need to be nagged to do. Once this has all happened, then the next step in the learning process (the actual learning) can take place in an environment that is perfectly primed for years of happy music making. This is part of the magic of piano lessons – and we can really use this to our advantage to foster a love of music early on! Learning and connecting with the student is so important and rewarding to everyone involved.
Sometimes the best teaching moments happen when we just let the lesson go and build a relationship. The things you love about Piano Adventures, the wonderful music and creativity, are still there. Yes, now there is a sight-reading book to accompany the series, but it is not available yet, so I can’t review it here. At the beginning of the book, a page was added to work on finger numbers and firm fingertips. Grumpy Old Troll, one of my favorite pieces in this book, now has words. There are a few new pieces, and there is more emphasis on famous composers.
They had to learn the entire grand staff for our state theory exam, and of course they need constant review for it to become part of their long-term memory. Her material is so colorful and creative that I want to move up to Canada so I can take lessons from her! In addition to all her games and on-line tutorials, she has a complete beginning piano method for pre-school available for download. Cut them out and hide the eggs around your studio. Your younger students will be so excited when you tell them they are going on an Easter egg hunt! Just because eighth notes are not in beginning piano books doesn’t mean you  have to wait for the second or third year of piano to learn them.
If youa€™ve just entered a community and hardly know anyone it can be hard to find a piano teacher.
Once you are confident in locating all the Cs, locating the rest of the notes on the keyboard will be quite easy.
Jazz music consists more of improvisation, so you need to be well-versed about the major and minor keys before attempting to do some improvisations.
Play something that rocks… and find simple little ways that they can join in on your music making.
This has helped me to realize (and remember) that I can incorporate this into lessons given online. Gives us a great start on our musical journey, and parents always feel like they got their money’s worth. Like you would otherwise get to know the person, their expected pay, your meeting times, etc.
There are essentially only 12 notes to learn as the keyboard is divided into groups of 12 notes. The important thing is for you to learn the keyboard, position of hands and basic fingering.
Being too closely tied to the method book means you might miss those golden opportunities – so trust your own instincts and use the book as a resource for your own teaching style rather than as a dictator for what should happen and when. Over the years my boxes of tissues are mainly used to wipe up tears of laughter in the lessons. If your students can’t clap 8th notes, print only the first side and write in the rhythms you want to use.
Youa€™re pretty much guaranteed to get a quality musical education because music stores only allow people with a musical background to teach music lessons.
Each group has seven white keys and five black keys, with each group starting (and ending) with C or Do.
Once you have knowledge of these, playing simple tunes using the right hand will be a breeze. If Easter eggs are not appropriate for your students, give me a suggestion and I might be able to come up with something else.
