Acclaimed pianists and teachers help you progress regardless of your level : beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
Concert pianist, professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the University of the Arts in Berlin.
Take advantage of our teachersa€™ advice on pieces categorized by difficulty from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, and many others, for both 2 and 4 hands. Our teachers guide you through the great works of the pianistic repertoire: Beethovena€™s Bagatelle, Brahmsa€™ Intermezzi, Chopina€™s Mazurkas and Waltzes, Debussya€™s Preludes, Schumanna€™s Scenes from Childhood, Papillons, and many more. Beyond the complexities of learning the notes of a given scale lies the challenge of fingering. Fingering is the principle that regulates the execution of an idea on the piano, the choice of fingers to use, and how they are ordered.
I’m going to show you in this post, how the number Charles Barkley wore can help you play 50% of the major scales on the piano. Before we get into the the fingering for major scales, let’s review the major scale by considering its formation, direction and formula.
Beyond the arrangement of the notes alphabetically in ascending or descending order, one thing that is noteworthy is the distance between the notes.
There are only two occurrences of the half step (aka – “semitone progression”) in the major scale. E and F are the third and fourth degrees of the major scale while B and C are the seventh and eighth (aka – “the first”) degrees of the major scale.
Now that we have a formula, let me give you (or remind you of) an easy way to recall the distances between the tones of the major scale.
But using this mnemonic “Why Won’t He Wear White When Hot”, the formula will only get more memorable and easy to apply. There are 12 major scales on the piano, realizing that there could be more than that if we chose to see C# and Db major as two different scales. Fingering is challenging until you understand the relationship between your body and hands. The use of these numbers to suggest fingering may not be familiar to all ear musicians, however, classically trained musicians are very familiar with this.
The answer to this arithmetic represents the number of notes in the major scale, while the arithmetic, itself, is the fingering guide to the way notes should be played.
After playing the first 3 notes of the scale, the thumb literally crosses under and prepares to play the fourth note, freeing up your second, third, and fourth digits to play the remaining notes.
I’m surprised you did not point out that you can finger any scale if you know where to put your fourth finger. In the keys of C, D, E, G, A and B, the right hand fourth finger goes on the 7th degree (TEE) and the left hand fourth finger goes on the second degree (RAY). In the keys of Db and Gb, the right hand fourth finger goes on Bb, the lef hand fourth finger goes on Gb. Bb – RH 4th finger on Bb, LH 4th finger on Eb (FAH) I think the Bb scale is the hardest one to play. If you’re interested in learning an easy way to form dominant chords, this lesson is for you. In this lesson, you’ll discover how you can use leading note chords to form dominant chords. The term leading note is a technical name that music scholars associate with the seventh degree of the scale. The seventh degree of the major and harmonic minor scales are a half step below the first degree, consequently, we’ll be using the as the traditional scales of the major and minor keys.
In a nutshell, the major and minor keys have the same quality of triad – the diminished triad.
Hence you’re already familiar with the leading note triads of the major and minor key, deriving leading note seventh chords is easier. The leading note seventh chord in the major key is different from its counterpart in the minor key. Dominant chords are formed on the fifth degree of the scale and just like their leading note counterparts they are positional. Due to the fact that there are various classes of dominant chords, you’re at liberty to use triads, seventh chords, ninth chords, and thirteenth chords as dominant chords.
These leading note chords can be used in the formation of dominant chord using two simple steps.
Step #2 – Go to the third degree of the major scale of that key and form any leading note chord.
Therefore all G leading note chords if played over Eb on the bass produce Eb dominant chords.
Therefore all D# leading note chords if played over B on the bass produces B  dominant chords. Read this post carefully because I’m taking you by the hand and showing you, step by step, what a minor triad is. Tonal attribute simply means the inherent property of a chord in terms of whether it is a major or a minor chord.
The natural minor scale consists of: C, D, E?, F, G, A?, B?, C, and is the principal scale we’ll be using in the formation of the minor chord.
Knowledge of the major third and perfect fifth in all keys is important in the chord formation of minor triads.
The goal of this post is to equip you with what you need to construct minor triads in every key. So using any given natural minor scale in any key, you can stack thirds from the root of the chord to produce a minor triad. Even though we are not playing three of them, C-Eb is considered a third because it encompasses three scale steps. So, using any given natural minor scale, you can form minor triads by connecting notes in thirds. Using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th tones of the minor scale is a shortcut to playing any minor triad. Earlier in this post, when I was showing you what stuff minor triads are made of, I broke down two intervallic components of the minor triad – the minor third and the perfect fifth. It is the understanding of the minor third and the perfect fifth intervals in all keys that puts the minor triad within your grasp.
The minor third is usually associated with lowering the third scale step of any given major scale and is the basic denomination in the formation of the minor triad. The perfect fifth is an interval formed by stacking the first and the fifth scale step of either a major or minor scale.
The combination of the minor third and the perfect fifth intervals will produce a minor triad. Deriving the C minor triad is as easy as lowering the third degree from a major third (E) to a minor third (Eb).
A major triad inherits its tonal attribute from the major third, while a minor triad inherits its attributes from the minor third. But you can also raise and lower white keys that do not have black keys directly in front or back of them.
These may seem like advanced topics, but getting this clarification EARLY will ensure that you not only play piano chords well, but spell the notes correctly. In the previous section, when we talked about how flatting a note lowers it and sharping a note raises it, we were referencing half steps.
With a mastery of half and whole steps, you’re ready to learn what chords are made of.
Just take the first letter of every word and that tells you whether to use a whole step or a half step. You can form ANY major scale you want by starting on any tone and using the above WWHWWWH formula.
Just as it looks, we took the 1st, 3rd, and 5th tones of the C major scale, played them together, and produced our first chord – C major.
In fact, at one point (hundreds of years ago), dissonant chords and intervals like diminished chords and tritones (another topic) were banned from the church!
You’ve already learned the foundational chords but I want to cover the second way to build them. Whereas the major scale approach simply gave you the numbers of the scale to combine together, this one will use distance to determine the chord. Intervals are described with numbers: first, seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, and sevenths.
Since an interval is the distance between two notes, if you want to figure out any interval, just count up the number of alphabet letters encompassed between the notes. You’re trying to figure out if the interval is a third vs fourth, or a sixth vs seventh (many musicians get this wrong). Now, take it back to Kindergarten and simply count the alphabet letters encompassed in this interval. Knowing about generic intervals is important because a specific interval can never be different from its generic interval. For example, since notes can be raised and lowered, sometimes musicians get confused over whether to call something, for example, a minor third or augmented second since those both produce the same sound. Where major and minor thirds will differ is by how many half steps it takes to construct them.
And now that you know how to correctly create them and what letters to use, you should never spell a chord wrong again… even big, fancy chords. Remember when I said the fantastic four chords (major triads, minor triads, diminished triads, augmented triads) can be used to learn just about any other chord? Keep in mind: This approach requires that you know ALL four foundational chords in ALL 12 keys. In this post, I’ll be showing you the equivalence between fifths and half steps in chord progressions. We recently began a discussion on cyclical progressions in a previous post where I showed you how we can create predictable chord progressions by root movements in fifths. D to G is a downward movement of a fifth, and G to C is also a downward movement of a fifth. Although this may take a considerable amount of time and effort, it is worth the time and effort. These tones make up the chord’s skeleton and to a large extent, are responsible for the quality of the chord being dominant. The diminished interval is one of harshest intervals in music and was once considered as the devil in music because of its high degree of instability.

Summarily, the dominant seventh chord is a discord (a chord that sounds unpleasant) because its skeleton is tritonic.
In a 5-1 chord progression, it is possible to substitute chord 5 with another dominant seventh chord whose root is an augmented fourth lower. The enharmonic interval of the augmented fourth interval is the diminished fifth interval we mentioned earlier as the skeleton of the dominant seventh chord. Therefore, we’ll be substituting the G dominant seventh chord with the Db dominant seventh chord, whose root is an augmented fourth lower.
Simply because the augmented fourth is synonymous with the tritone, this substitution is called a tritone substitution.
A tritone substitution is the substitution of a dominant seventh chord with another chord whose root is a tritone (augmented fourth) lower. The chord substitution we just did is possible because of the enharmonic relationship between the skeleton of G dominant seventh and Db dominant seventh. When both chords are played side by side with their root and fifth (G-D in the case of G dominant seventh and Db-Ab in the case of Db dominant seventh chord) removed, this leaves only their respective skeletons. This is the relationship between the tritone vs the augmented fourth and diminished fifth intervals. For all intents and purposes, the F augmented fourth (F-B) and the F diminished fifth (F-Cb) are a tritone – three adjacent whole steps apart, irrespective of their harmonic role as the skeleton of the G dominant seventh chord and the Db dominant seventh chord.
Owing to the enharmonic relationship between the skeleton of G dominant seventh chord (F-B) and that of the Db dominant seventh chord (F-Cb), this substitution can hold. If we put the concept of tritone substitution to work, we may not have to move in fifths, we’ll just achieve the same result by moving in half steps. Using the concept of tritone substitution, we can make cyclical progressions move in half steps (D-Db-C) instead of in fifths (D-G-C) and still have the same result. Here’s a method that’s helping musicians swap out dull chords for exciting ones! This 101 lesson on tritone is basically to get anyone started and trust me, we are just getting started. That course not only gave me more insight on progressions, but also inspired what I’m about to share with you. You can play these 6 major scales if you remember the number Charles Barkley wore – 34. There are several dominant chords in music and they come in assorted sizes – triads, sevenths, ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths. This name is conditional and applies to a seventh degree that is only a half step away from the first (or eighth) degree. We just formed the half-diminished and diminished seventh chords in the major and minor keys respectively. Therefore, forming a major triad on the fifth degree of any major or minor key produces the dominant triad. It’s highly recommended that you take out sometime to learn the major and dominant seventh chord qualities in all the keys before you proceed with this study. Although there are several extended chords like the ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths, we’ll limit our scope to the dominant ninth chords in this lesson. Beyond that, you’re sure to be able to play minor triads in all 12 keys with absolute ease.
Remember that there are basically two tonalities – the major tonality and the minor tonality. This is one of the easiest things to do in chord formation because three scale steps from any note will be the next choice.
I’m speaking highly of it because you will stop skipping and picking after reading it.
The first and fifth tone of the major or minor scale will produce a perfect fifth (whether sounded together or separately).
But suffice it to say that minor chords (as well as major chords and most others) will always skip alphabet letters when in root position. I said that to say that the quality of a triad is determined by the interval between the first and the third tones.

However, because we associated the minor third with the major scale, you’ll have to permit me to associate the perfect fifth with the major scale as well. By doing so, the tonal attribute of the triad changes from major to something entirely different – minor. One using scales, one using intervals, and one using the combining of chords to produce bigger ones. Most chords will use some version of the 1, 3, and 5th tones (later, we’ll add in the 7th tone, which is HUGE in music).
With these four chord types, you can learn practically all others (I’ll prove it to you in a second). If one ? means to lower by one half step, then ?? must mean to lower by how many half steps?
That’s 48 chords (4 x 12 keys) but once you know them, you have the key to play literally hundreds of other chords. It is the instability of the dominant seventh chord (of the fifth degree) that pulls it towards chord 1. Our award winning team is made up of passionate musicians and music teachers, whose purpose in life is to make learning music easier and more accessible. That's why we've created this web page, so you can discover an amazing, new piano learning method that will teach you how to play virtually any piano song you hear, with the timing, rhythm and magic of a professional.

Inspired by my role model Jermaine Griggs, I started teaching musicians in my neighborhood in April 2005. The minor chord is used a lot in music because its fifth is consonant (and therefore more stable). Diminished chords take the sad and serious sound of minor chords even further by flatting yet another tone (the 5th). So we’d simply hit C in our left hand and an Eb diminished triad (Eb+G+Bbb) in our right.
So we’d simply hit C in our left hand and an E diminished triad (E+G+Bb) in our right.
