The most obvious thing, I think, is the piano has 88 keys from right to left and so you should sit towards the middle of the keyboard and the middle of the keyboard is defined as this note right there.

So with both perspectives covered, let me give you a few rules to ensure you’re naming notes correctly. Rule #1 – When it comes to major scales, every alphabet letter of the musical language MUST be used. This is pretty much the same thing as rule #1 but I just thought I’d emphasize it again here. Because if music has 7 alphabet letters and major scales have 7 unique notes, to skip a letter means you’re using 6 letters to make up 7 notes. To raise a degree of the scale is to raise THAT alphabet letter, not magically replace it with another letter of your choice. Somewhere in their musical journey, they learned that either chords are sharp-based or flat-based (similar to how major keys either have all sharps or all flats).
Rule #4 – Sharping or flatting a note will NEVER give you a different alphabet letter.
When it comes to moving beyond the first octave and counting the next octave as 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, we learn that the 2nd tone of the scale played higher is known as the 9th. Sharping and flatting doesn’t always mean adding a # or b to an alphabet letter either. Remember these 4 rules, learn to apply them in real situations, and you’ll likely never spell a chord wrong again… unless you want to! Throughout this book, you will see top-down images of a keyboard with the keys highlighted.
October 28, 2012 : By AndreaI spend a lot of time reading about piano teaching on the internet. Granted, when you are teaching a piece that is to be used for an exam, performance or competition you are not likely to want to be encouraging improv. 1)  Learn the 4 Chords:  Teach your piano student the I, IV, V and vi chords in the key of C.

2)  Learn to Spice it Up:  Teach your piano student how to add some passing tones between chords, and how to add rhythmic interest to their chording. Teaching students to play the piano by ear is both easy and difficult all at the same time.
I searched for a LONG time to find something to help my students play popular music in a way that was fun and not tied to the page. Robin Hall’s method is very easy to follow and my students literally walk out of their first lesson able to play 6 songs (oh, those fabulous 4 chords). Expanding upon broken chords means instead of having 135 135 135 (numbers = scale position) you could do a different pattern like 135353 or you can expand your chord to what I call a pop chord – where your LH plays the root, the 5th and then the root an octave higher.
Expanding upon broken chords is most easily done by varying the rhythm or by getting rid of the 3rd in the chord and adding the 2nd or the 4th instead which gives you a really modern jazzy sound.
I have had students who have never played anything at all by ear start out by writing the words to a song on blue painters tape (sometimes lyric sylables if necessary).
Here below you'll find a recommendation of my favourite piano bench (Because it is so comfortable!). It's important to feel comfortable while playing and to have a chair that fits the flexibility your body requires while playing the piano. It insures that the you'll be seated at the proper height to maintain the correct hand position. I saw him years ago at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento and it was kind of fun to see a guy sitting on a phone book because he couldn’t count on the fact that each place that he played would have benches high enough for him to sit on, so he carried his own solution. The best way to do that is to pass your thumb under your third finger and go up like that, and when you come back down, cross over. The great pianists of the world can do whatever they want because they’re the great pianists in the world, right? You need to repeat more than once the last measure but one of each line, in order to avoid unpleasant snags. The game will improve your little kids’ fine motor skills and musical abilities while enabling them to create new things. Keep it simple – teach them two ways to expand upon broken chords and two ways to expand upon solid chording. Choose a melody that your student knows very well – start with something simple like Jingle Bells.

Having the correct posture helps us preventing our body from damage and stress that might occur while sitting through these long hours, practicing. You can identify it because it’s straight down from the start of whatever your brand is, Steinway or Yamaha or whatever it is. You’ve got to sit high enough so that your fingers can come straight out from your body or a little downward slant and your fingers can be curved. You have five fingers on each hand, you probably know, and I’ve seen some beginners try to play like this, with their little finger or even their fourth and middle finger tucked under. Now when you have two white keys in a row, use your thumb and second finger, then third, thumb, third, thumb, third, thumb, second and so on.
Sit in the middle of the keyboard, make sure you’re high enough, make sure your fingers are curved comfortably. Also that E launching the second line phrase could give some problems, just like the fifth measure rest. This free game created for Android devices under Toddlers baby category.Kids Piano Lite is for toddlers, babies and even for infants to create music and educate themselves at the same time. However, for those students who take piano lessons as a recreational activity (which is a large percentage of piano students) it seems a shame to me that we are searching for ways to squelch a skill that has the potential to add massive amounts of enjoyment, creativity and self-expression to your piano students’ musical experience. In fact, if your piano students are able to both read music and play by ear you’ll have a studio full of the most well-rounded and versatile pianists! You have to be higher so that you can look down at the keyboard and so your fingers can be curved. You don’t need to curl them up like that, but just comfortably curved and then use fingering that makes sense.
Students can play for hours with just these 4 chords and they can accompany themselves singing just about any song form the radio using these chords. While your student’s first few attempts at playing by ear may be cringe-worthy, take a step back and appreciate the massive amount of learning that is taking place.
Ask once a friend to throw your hand from the piano when you play and if it will fly away easily it means you're doing well at keeping your wrist loose.
