Powderpost beetles includes a wide range of subspecies all of which eat and live in wood commonly used for construction. The point is the old list of powderpost beetles has definitely changed in recent years and the more we import foreign wood and furniture, the more this list will grow.
Because we encounter powderpost beetles in several different situations, we will present this information in four sections. Although an unprotected structure is a target for unwanted pests, powder post beetle infestations are more likely to be in wood which is used for construction. To solve a problem with either powderpost beetles or old house borers, you must stop the larva.
For example, if a piece of cherry furniture has some powderpost beetles, the emerging adults will try to infest other areas of the same furniture.
Now that you have a basic understanding of powderpost beetles and how they develop, lets examine more specifically the type of infestation you are experiencing. Just like log homes, if you have a more traditional home that uses exterior siding made of pine, cedar or some other wood, this siding can get infested with powderpost beetles. Like log homes, conventional homes can have an infestation of powder post beetles brought with the original wood used for construction. If you suspect you have activity in wall voids below attics or above crawl spaces, you have a couple of options for treatment. To treat such wood, you need to use a product which will penetrate throughout the frame and insure all stages of the beetle or termite are killed.
Now if you intend on refinishing the wood any time soon, then you probably should wait for that to be done so you can treat with Boracare which will no doubt provide the more complete and thorough treatment.
The trick to doing this type of treatment is knowing where the holes you are drilling are going and making sure they are going the correct depth. Since there are so many tree boring beetles and borers, it's worth mentioning that you can control and stop such invasions if you would like to save a tree from premature death.
Powderpost beetles can infest trees but there are many other species which do this more frequently. Because we get so many questions on this, the author feels it's important to point out that NOTHING CAN KILL POWDERPOST BEETLE PUPAE.
Termite control :- Pre-Construction anti-termite treatment - 10 years warranty. Powder post beetles get their name from the ability of the larval stage to feed and reduce wood to a powder. Moisture control in your crawl space area is paramount to the successful eradication of subterranean termites and wood borer beetles in your structure. When shopping for termite treatment guarantees you should be pay close attention to the types of termite treatment guarantees each termite company offers. Powderpost beetles breed in dead and dried hardwoods such as the dead branches and limbs of trees.
The Powder Post Beetle causes woodworm damage to the sapwood of tropical and European hardwoods, particularly those with high starch content and large pores. This woodworm beetle is found in timber with large enough pores for the female to lay her eggs; The powderpost beetle is small 1-7mm in length. Emergence holes are circular, 1-2 mm in diameter and consequently can be misidentified as Common Furniture Beetle by the unqualified surveyor.
Many modern buildings will not suffer from attack by this beetle as softwood timbers are immune to the Lyctus Powderpost Beetle.

The main sign of infestation is yellowish powder from furniture, which is one of excrement from the body. As a treatment, wood preservative chemicals are required to be injected into these tiny exit holes with the help of syringe and larvae is targeted as only larvae is responsible for the damage to the wood. An oil base solution is injected in the holes created as result of damage caused by powder post beetles. The end result will be a much broader range of beetles many of which will be quite capable of infesting both softwood and hardwood.
By understanding their life cycle, you will be able to understand why we do certain treatments for control.

The first sign is usually exit holes and if you're finding small pin holes along sections of your homes siding, a thorough treatment to get the nesting beetles deep within the wood will be needed.
Boracare has the ability to penetrate 2-4 inches of wood and will be lethal to feeding powderpost beetle or old house borer larva.
Many times a spot treatment will resolve a localized problem area but then other areas of the home are found to be infested. Many professional applicators like to use this material when treating for borers and powderpost beetles. Although Boracare is needed for penetrating, using another product called TIMBOR will work well for surface treatments and should be considered for preventative applications.
Unfortunately Boracare needs at least one unfinished side in order for the treatment to work. Jecta Gel is basically Boracare in a gel form which allows for treatment where the liquid is difficult to apply or use. Regardless of which treatment you use, you will be able to refinish the wood with stain or varnish and the application will have no impact on how it looks.
If there are thousands of beetles currently in the wood the damage could become significant before the cycle runs it's course. Most all trees can handle a few boring beetles but when the activity gets to be excessive, even the biggest and strongest hardwood can succumb to the damage.
Selecting that which is best depends on a number of factors including the severity of infestation, area being attacked, potential for re-infestation and treatment expense the customer is willing to bear. In crawl space areas a borate treatment will surely do the job. We recommend a thorough treatment by an Interstate Termite & Pest Control professional who will be able to provide greater satisfaction.
Please remember this article is not intended to discuss in great detail the different species of powderpost beetles you may encounter.
But the vast majority of powderpost beetles and other wood destroying beetles worldwide can live in any kind wood.
These recyclers are ever present and represent themselves in the form of carpenter bees, carpenter ants, termites, decay fungus and powderpost beetles. But if you follow the recommended treatment listed below and keep finding new exit holes 12 months after the initial application, it usually means the beetles are still very much active and thriving from a layer of wood under the siding. It costs less to use than Boracare and I expect this is the main reason why it is the product of choice.
Treatment of these areas is generally easier than treating a log home because the wood is usually exposed and unfinished. Once open, you would have direct access to studs and sheathing allowing for direct treatment with Boracare. Timbor does a good job of preventing powderpost beetles as well as decay fungus and is recommended to apply as a precaution to stop such problems from developing. Additionally, we are importing more and more foreign furniture and with it a lot of new beetle species. Remember, they will many times rely on word of mouth advertising and the last thing they need is an unhappy customer that's got a beetle infestation due to the flooring he's installed!
Having the new floor treated will keep it protected indefinitely and in my humble opinion, should be done in most cases due to it's low cost compared to the installation and finishing cost of most flooring these days.
Additionally, both softwood and hardwood trees are vulnerable to this vast populaton of wood infesting beetles. The author has seen where this will commonly occur for 6-12 months following 25-50% of the treatments to wood with significant infestations. But if you're unsure about your treatment or if you want a little piece of mind, treat all exit holes and any cracks or crevices you find in the wood (like the joints common to any wood floor) with some PHANTOM. Homes with crawl spaces are generally inspected for the presence of a powder post beetle infestation during a real estate inspection and by exterminators when doing a crawl space termite inspection.
Other wood destroying pests include Bamboo Borers, Wood Boring Weevils, Bark Borers, Furniture Beetles, Steely Blue Beetles, Deathwatch Beetles, False Powderpost Beetles, Sculptured Pine Beetles and Wharfborer Beetles. The good news is you won't have to pay for expensive fumigation (which can cost thousands of dollars!) to get control of this boring beetle.
So if the piece infested has a lot of stain or some kind of exterior finish like varnish with no large, unfinished sections, a Boracare treatment is probably out of question. Although antiquing can be exciting and rewarding, be wary of powderpost beetles when looking at something you want to purchase for use in your home. Although this could be costly, it will probably be a lot cheaper than waiting a few years and then finding out the floor is so damaged that it must be replaced and that the problem has spread to other parts of the home. Although this treatment is tedious, you will avoid the added the cost and aggravation of having to strip and refinish the floors.

The main reason is that exiting adults don't eat the wood like powderpost beetle larvae. He's also seen where adults will continue to drill out some 1-2 years post treatment and though not common, it does happen in roughly 10-15% of the jobs where all the proper applications were made. Remember, adult beetles exiting the treated wood will no doubt be looking for a mate and a good place in which to lay eggs. Since Phantom is odorless and goes on dry, you can do some spot treatments without making a mess. During my years as a termite inspector I found hundreds of homes infested with powder post beetles. In a relatively short period of 2-4 years it can reduce the sapwood of susceptible hardwood species to powdered matter. People do not realize that the wood is infested until the adult beetles emerge from within the wood. The bottom line is the list of wood destroying beetles present in the United States is well over 50 and probably closer to 100 at this time. The fourth will be for homeowners who experience beetles emerging from wood floors made of hardwood or softwood. If powderpost beetles are what you have, expect to see tiny little holes and in some cases channels where they have chewed their way through the wood. The chances of these beetles cross breeding is now as likely as ever due to the ever broadening range of furniture we import here in the States. No one knows if the treatments need to be increased or if the material being used is simply not penetrating the wood deep enough. Boracare dries invisible but because Timbor is a wettable powder, it can be seen on many wood surfaces after it dries. In most cases you'll be able to take care of the problem at a fraction of the cost and in the end, get the piece treated in a way that will last for many years. Small holes will be seen and talc like powder begins to accumulate where adult beetles are emerging.
It used to be the vast majority of powderpost beetles were very much wood specific but this has changed. Keep a can of PT-CYKICK on hand to spot treat should you see activity in between regular treatments.
And since powderpost beetles will target similar if not exactly the kind of wood from which they emerged, anything similar cellulose wise in the home is fair game and a likely target. Unfortunately all this exotic furniture made in far away lands will contain exotic beetles and some of these are quite capable of adapting to their new environments.
More importantly, after the treatment all the holes can be filled with wood dowels and finished so that cosmetically there is no need to leave any sign a treatment was even done. Wood flooring is now imported from all over the world and with these new suppliers comes a whole new range of beetle species.
And since the treatment works as a stomach poison, it's not able to have enough of an impact from chewing alone. In fact, there is a lot of evidence to support the notion that female powderpost beetles seem to like using exit holes for egg laying.
Small holes in the wood, about the size of a pin head with frass falling out of the hole and streaming down the wood’s surface was the tell-tale signs of active powder post beetles.
Use one of our Pump Sprayers along with the optional Spray Wand to get good coverage a uniform treatment. To insure a more thorough and complete treatment, it is recommended that you use one of the other materials we have like the BORACARE or JECTA GEL. If you only treat the sections where the beetles are emerging, you may find out later that they are throughout other sections and you will have to treat those sections anyway.
This means your hardwood floor beetle problem could easily lead to a problem in your pine molding or cherry dresser. Nature has equipped these stages to endure a lot of extreme exposures as a way to insure powderpost beetles are able to continue and help recycle cellulose. This tells me there is a problem with conventional methods of treatment by the wood floor manufacturers or that the product is simply getting infested while it's kept in storage prior to processing and packaging.
This Fogger is able to propel the material 50 feet or more allowing for the treatment of many crawl spaces and attics which would otherwise be virtually impossible to access.
