Weissler Holiday Gazette

December 2012

It's the most wonderful time of the year...again. :-)

After all the excitement in 2011 with the Monument Fire here, happily 2012 was a calmer year. We were still a bit in recovery mode from the fire with some work on the house - sealing windows, repainting, landscaping. Some of the trees that looked completely lost are at least sprouting from the roots decently, although it will be a long time before they look as they once did.

We had more great trips this past year, including a return to Panama, the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, and cycling in Burgundy, France. Panama and Brazil were birding trips with local friend and nature guide Mark Pretti (and happily Robert was able to visit cousin Bettina and family in Valinhos before the birding trip), while Burgundy was a VBT trip with some of our "Downhill to Breakfast" friends. We visited with cousins Bob and Pam Deichmeister at their vacation home in Prescott AZ in February, and Liza was also able to visit friends Mark and Joanne Guralnick in Brooklyn in August following a work trip to Aberdeen MD. Robert enjoyed a trip to New Jersey for niece Rachel's high school graduation in May, while niece Margaret's graduation was the same weekend in southern California. We also made it to southern California a couple of times, before/after the France trip to celebrate birthdays, and at Thanksgiving - which included going to the USC-Notre Dame football game, which sadly we lost...!

Locally, Robert made a change on the job front, leaving L-3 Communications (which had only recently renamed to Engility), and is now the Executive Director of the Friends of the San Pedro River. Liza still works for the Army, but is also now a Cochise County Planning & Zoning Commissioner (one of nine...pro bono).

As usual we're planning next year's travel already. We're hoping to do a self-supported cycling trip in Germany along the Mosel in May, with our DHTB friends. And as long as Liza's work doesn't squash the notion, a birding trip to Colombia in June, again with Mark Pretti. Of course Liza wants to return to Croatia, and Spain sounds lovely, as do a lot of other places, but there's only so much time each year to do things...

Wishing you a terrific holiday season and a marvelous 2013.

By the way, if you hover your mouse over the photos, captions should appear...unless you're on an iPad, in which case I can't help you. :-0
