| Samstag/Sonntag, 25/26 April – Los Angeles nach München | |
| Heute (Samstag) fliegen wir ab, um
15:30. Wir kommen in München an um 13:35.
Lisa Prugger war im Flughafen – wir haben gedacht,
daß wir den Zug nach Hauptbahnhof (und dann nach
Pullach) nehmen. Es war sehr nett von ihr, uns zu
abnehmen. Diese Abend sind wir zu eine kleine
Konzert aus Lisa’s Freunden und Kollegen gegangen.
Sie haben Sonate des Schumann gespielt (für Geige und
Klavier). Danach kamen wir zu Hause zurück, und hatten wir eines kleines Abendessen. Zu endlich, schlafen wir. |
Saturday we left Los Angeles at around 3:30
pm, arriving in Munich at 1:35 pm local time the next
day. Lisa Prugger met us at the airport – wonderful!
considering we thought we would take the S-bahn from the
airport to the main train station, and then onward to
Pullach. It really was nice of her to meet us.
This evening we went to a concert by Lisa’s friends and
colleagues at the Pullach music school, where we heard a
Schumann sonata for violin and piano. Afterwards we returned to the Prugger’s house, and had a small dinner. Finally, we got to sleep, in the little attic bedroom with the sloping ceiling. We’re exhausted! |
| Montag, 27 April – München nach Salzburg | |
| Am morgen, haben wir Frühstuck
gegessen, und dann fahrten wir zum Hauptbahnhof, wo unsere
Reisepassen(?) “validated” werden. Danach sind wir
nach der Universität gefahren, und in der Englische
Buchhandler haben wir Vögelbücher gekauft.
Ein Buch ist auf Englisch, Vögel für Europa und
Groß Brittania, und das andere ist auf Deutsch, und
ist nur für Deutsche und Österreiche Vögel. Danach sind wir nach Salzburg gefahren. Wir gehen zu Fuß nach die Getreidegasse (ein Fußgängerzone), und an der Salzach haben wir viele interresant Vögel gesehen: Mallards, ein “Black-headed Gull”, usw. Danach gehen wir zu die Mirabell Garten, und wir haben mehre Vögel (ohne Fernglas!) gesehen. Unsere neue Bücher hilfen uns sehr. Wir haben Abendessen in eine kleine Restaurant, Würsteln und Pommes Frites. Jetzt sehe Ich fern, und Robert schläft. Um 21:15 “Miami Vice” ist in an der Fernsehen. Toll! Ich habe Postkarten schreiben, für meine Eltern, Lindsey und Jackie, und Susan Richter bei RAND. Robert hat eins für seine Eltern, und am morgen schicken wir die Karten. |
We ate breakfast and then made our way over
to the main train station, where we had our rail passes
validated. Then we went over to the university, and in
the English Bookstore we bought a couple of bird
books. One is in English (Birds of Europe and Great
Britain), and the other is in German, only covering German
and Austrian birds. Then we headed out for Salzburg. We walked along the Getreidegasse, and along the Salzach river saw many interesting birds, including Mallards, Black-headed Gull, and so forth. We then went to the Mirabell Garden, where we saw many more birds among the beautiful flowers and landscaping*. The new books helped us tremendously. We ate dinner in a small restaurant (Liza’s favorite bratwurst and french fries). Now I’m watching television while Robert sleeps. At 9:15 pm “Miami Vice” is on the tube. I wrote postcards to my parents, Lindsey and Jackie, and Susan Richter. Robert has one for his parents, too, and tomorrow we’ll mail them. *The Mirabell Garten is featured prominently in the film The Sound of Music; it is where Maria and the children finish singing “Do Re Mi”, with the incredible view of the Hohensalzburg behind them. |

| Am Morgen haben wir Frühstuck im
Hotel gegessen, dann sind wir zum Hohensalzburg
gegangen. Wir sind zu Fuß gegangen, und habe
Ich sehr viele Fotos genommen. Das Aussicht vom
Hohensalzburg war ganz schön. Danach haben wir ein Bus genommen, und sind nach Schloß Hellbrunn gegangen. Das Wasserspiel war sehr komisch! Wir haben sehr interesante Vögel gesehen; am besten war ein Griffon Vulture. Heute Abend am Fernsehen ist “Was Bin Ich” (What’s My Line). Es gibt viele Nachrichten über das “US-Entscheidung” an Kurt Waldheim und der “Watch List” für “Nazi Collaborators”. Wir haben ein Italienisches Abendessen gegessen – gut! Zuletzt habe Ich funf Postkarten geschreiben. Ja, Ich habe im Postamt Briefmarken gekauft – es war sehr leicht! |
In the morning we had breakfast in the hotel,
then walked to the Hohensalzburg. I took a lot of
pictures. The view from the castle was
remarkable. Afterwards we caught a bus and went out to
Schloss Hellbrunn, home of the famous “Wasserspiel”; sit on
a stone bench and get water squirted up your behind!
We saw a lot of good birds, including a Griffon
Vulture. Somewhat out of his range, but there was no
doubt. A German version of “What’s My Line” was on television this evening. There was also a lot of news about the US decision regarding Kurt Waldheim and our watch-list of Nazi collaborators; if Waldheim is on the list, will he be allowed to visit the US? A sticky question considering Waldheim is a head of state. We had an Italian dinner, very good. Lastly, I wrote five postcards. I even bought the stamps in the post office today, it was surprisingly easy, considering my German isn’t the greatest. |
| Mittwoch, 29 April – Salzburg | |
| Heute haben wir früh aufgestanden und ein Zug nach Freilassing genommen; da haben wir umgesteigen und ein anderer Zug nach Berchtesgaden genommen. Wir sind mit Bus gefahren nach Königsee. Wir haben eine “Bootreise” an der Königssee gemacht – sehr schön! Wir haben die kleine Kirche St. Bartholomew besucht und dann sind wir nach der Obersee gewandert. Am Morgen gehen wir weiter, nach Zell am See. | We got up early this morning and took a train
to Freilassing, where we transferred to another train headed
for Berchtesgaden. From there we went by bus to the
Königssee. We took a boat trip on the lake,
simply beautiful. We visited the small St.
Bartholomew’s church at the far end of the lake, and walked
the short distance from there to the Obersee. In the
morning we’re headed to Zell am See. |
| Donnerstag, 30 April – Zell am See | |
| Wir haben in Zell am See angekommen um
10:30. Das Wetter war wunderbar, so klar, und die
Sonne hat gescheint. Es war sehr warm. Wir
haben ein Boot gemieten für eine Stunde, es war nur
80 Ös. Wir haben “neue” Vögel gesehen –
Tufted Duck und Pochard. Wir haben auch ein
weiße Vogel gesehen, so wie ein Mallard. Wir
sind immer noch nicht sicher was das Vogel war. Ich habe “Füßschmerz”, also habe Ich ein Paar weiße Sport-Schuhe gekauft. Robert und Ich haben ein ganz interessantes Spiel gesehen. Viele Männer haben gespielt, und es war so wie das italienisches Spiel “bocci”. Alle die Geschäfte waren um 18:00 Uhr geschlossen, und wir sind zu Fuß gegangen fast eine Stunde. Endlich haben wir eine kleine Restaurant gefunden; dann sind zum Hotel gegangen. |
We arrived in Zell am See around 10:30
am. The weather was gorgeous, so clear, sunny, and
warm. We rented a boat for an hour (only 80
schillings), and saw two “new” birds, Tufted Duck and
Pochard. We also saw a white bird resembling a
mallard, but we’re still not sure what it was. My feet hurt from all the walking in Salzburg, so I bought a pair of white tennis shoes to wear. We saw some men playing a game today that looked a lot like the Italian game of “bocci”. All the stores and shops were closed at 6:00. We walked around for an hour looking for a restaurant and finally found a small place open for dinner, and afterwards just returned to the hotel. |
| Freitag, 1 Mai – Zell am See nach Graz | |
| Heute war sehr neblich! Man
könnte die Berge nicht sehen! Heute war ein Feiertag, und viele Geschäfte waren geschlossen. Wir haben unsere Frühstuck sehr früh gegessen, dann sind wir zum Bahnhof gegangen. Wir haben ein Zug nach Graz genommen (wir haben in Bischofshofen umgesteigt). Wir waren im Graz um 13:30 Uhr. Wir sind zu Fuß nach der Altstadt gegangen, und wir sind in Pfarrkirche hinein gegangen; ganz schön. Er ist eine Gottische kirche mit große farbliche Fenstere. Dann sind wir zu Uhrturm gegangen, am Berg, es war auch sehr schön. (Bergfahrt hat nur 8 Ös gekostet.) Es gab viele Blumen – tulips, daffodils, candytuft, und mehr! Es gab auch ein sehr schönes Aussicht der Stadt, man könnte fast zu Jugoslawien sehen. Jetzt sind wir im Bett. Es gibt ein Film an der Fernsehen über Franz Schubert, und es ist ok. Morgen abend vielleicht gehen wir ins Kino, das Film “Star Trek IV” um zu sehen. |
Today it was very cloudy! You couldn’t
even see the mountains. Today was a holiday (May Day), and most stores were closed. We had breakfast very early, then caught a train for Graz, transferring in Bischofhofen, and arriving at 1:30 pm. We walked to the “old town” part of the city, and visited the Pfarrkirche, an impressive Gothic church with much stained glass. Then we went to the city clock tower, on top of a hill overlooking the city; the tram ride only cost 8 schillings. There were so many flowers there, including tulips, daffodils, candytuft, and more. The view of the city was wonderful, you could see practically to Yugoslavia from there! [But overall, walking around wasn’t the greatest today, too many oddballs out because of May Day, and everybody stared at Liza’s white shoes. Guess women don’t wear white shoes around here.] |
| Samstag, 2 Mai – Graz | |
| Heute war ganz besser als gestern.
Wir sind mit dir Strassenbahn gefahren nach Schloß
Eggenberg, und in diesem Ort, haben wir sehr viele
Vögel gesehen: auf Englisch, shelducks, pheasants,
peacocks, geese, usw. Wir haben auch deer
gesehen. Danach diese kleine Reise, haben wir etwas
zu essen; Ich habe ein Wiener Eiskaffee getrunken, und
Robert hat ein Pizza gegessen. Alles war sehr
gut! Zunächst, sind wir zum Zentrum gegangen,
wo Ich ein Textilgeschäft versucht habe.
Leider, alle die Geschäfte waren geschlossen!
Um 14:00 Uhr! Komische! Wir haben ein sehr
nette Spaziergang gemacht; wir haben den Grazer Dom
besucht, und die Fransiskanerkirche, und Mariahilfkirche
auch. Alles waren sehr, sehr schön. Der
Grazer Dom ist sehr alt. Meistens alle die Kirchen
sind alt, natürlich. Für Abendessen, haben wir Eis gegessen mit cappuccino in einem kleinen Restaurant, und dann haben wir das Film “Star Trek IV (Zurück in die Gegenwart)” angeschauen. Jetzt sind wir hier im Hotel, und gibt es nichts am Fernsehen! Nur eine Sendung so wie Lawrence Welk. Eine Dame hat “Die Rosen vom Wörtersee” gesungen. Am Morgen gehen wir nach Wien. |
Today was better than yesterday. We
took the light rail out to Schloß Eggenberg, where we
saw many birds, including shelducks, exotic pheasants,
peacocks, geese, and so forth. We also saw deer on the
grounds. Following that small trip, we had a little to
eat; I had a Viennese Ice Coffee, and Robert ate a
pizza. Everything was good. We next returned to
the city center, where I looked fruitlessly for a fabric
store (I wanted to look for a dirndl pattern).
Unfortunately, all the stores were closed. At 2:00 in
the afternoon on a Saturday! That’s ridiculous!
So we took a nice walk instead, and visited the Graz
cathedral, the Franciscan church, and Mariahilfskirche (Our
Lady of Succour Church) . All were very
beautiful. The Graz cathedral is especially old.
Of course, all the churches here are old. For dinner we had ice cream with cappuccino (so healthy) in a small cafe, and then saw the film “Star Trek IV”. [At home this film was subtitled “The Voyage Home”, and was popularly known as the “save the whales” movie; here it was subtitled “Back to the Past”.] Now we’re back at the hotel, and there is absolutely nothing on television. There’s a bad Lawrence Welk-type show, with a woman singing “The Roses from Wörtersee”. It’s pretty bad. Tomorrow we go to Vienna. |
| Dienstag, 5 Mai – Vienna | |
| Wir sind in Wien schon drei Tage
gebliebt! Wien ist toll. Am ersten Tag (wir
sind um 13:00 Uhr angekommen), sind wir zur Innere Stadt
gefahren. Der zweite Tag, sind wir nach Neusiedl am
See gefahren (mit dem Zug). Der dritte Tag, sind wir
nach Melk, für die Stiftskirche um zu sehen, und dann
nach Schloß Schönbrunn gefahren. Alle
drei Tage hat es geregnet. Neusiedl am See war nicht
wirklich am See; der See war fast 10 km weit! Wir
möchteten ein Vögelreservat beschuchen, aber es
war zu weit zu spazieren. Die Melk Stiftskirche war
sehr interessant, ganz schön und groß.
Der Hochaltar ist meistens Gold und rotes Marmar.
Und Schloß Schönbrunn ist sehr schön, mit
der Garten und die Denkmal “Gloriette”. Auch am ersten Tag, haben wir die Kunsthistorisches Museum besucht. Am Sonntag, ist der Eintritt frei. Wir sind auch an der Kärtnerstraße spaziert. Es ist fantastisch! Um 17:00 Uhr gibt es viele Leute, und auch viele Musikaner. Es gibt alles vom Mittelostmusik bis Amerikanische musik, und auch Klassischesmusik. Vielleicht am besten für mich in Wien war das Kaffee. Es gibt mehr als 30 Kaffeegetränke hier in Wien, und Eiskaffee ist wirklich toll! Heute (5 Mai) haben wir “salami”, Käse, und Brot gekauft. Wir haben eine sehr lange Reise mit dem Zug nach Nürnberg am Morgen, fast fünf Stunden. (Und auch, endlich, ein Stück Sachertorte! Wir haben die Hotele Sacher und Demels gefunden, aber Demels hat kein Sachertorte (daß wir sehen könnten), und der Hotel Sacher wollt 170 Ös für eine kleine Stück! Wahnsinn! Ich kann das selbst machen!) Und auch, bevor Ich vergesse, Ich muß etwas über unsere Zimmer schreiben. Es ist billig, und in Bißchen “tacky”. Es ist eine Pension (Pension Funfhaus) in der Nähe von der Westbahnhof. Die Vorhänge sind zu groß für die Fenstere, es gibt kein Teppich, und die Hausfrau ist eine alte Jugoslawienin. Es ist fürchtbar. Ich war zuerst ein Bißchen böse, aber jetzt scheint es komische. Und wir sparen Geld; hier ist es nur 530 Ös pro Nacht (Graz war 600 Ös, Zell am See 630 Ös, und Salzburg 700 Ös!). Wir haben ein Abendessen in das Restaurant “Zum Weißen Rauchgangkehrer” geplannt, aber sie nemhen Visakarte nicht. Schade. Das ist fast alles. Am Morgen – Nürnberg. |
We’ve stayed in Vienna three days!
Vienna is wonderful. On the first day (we arrived at
1:00 pm), we visited the “inner ring” of the city. The
second day, we went out to Neusiedl am See on the
train. The third day, we went to Melk (to see the
monastery) and also to Schloss Schönbrunn. All
three days it rained. Neusiedl am See wasn’t really on
the See (lake); the lake was a good 10km away. We
wanted to visit a bird reserve, but there wasn’t a good way
to get there. The Melk monastery was very interesting
(“The Name of the Rose” was filmed there), very large and
beautiful. The high altar was mostly gold and red
marble. And Schönbrunn was very pretty, too, with
the beautiful gardens and the Gloriette monument. Also on the first day, we visited the Art History Museum. Entrance is free on Sundays. We also went to the Kärtnerstrasse pedestrian zone. It was fantastic! At 5:00 pm it was suddenly full of people, and also many street musicians. There was everything from Middle Eastern music to American music, with some classical thrown in for good measure. Probably the best thing for me in Vienna was the coffee. There are more than 30 kinds of coffee drinks you can order, and the iced coffee is incredible! Today (May 5th) we bought salami, cheese, and bread to nibble on tomorrow. We have a very long train trip in Nurenberg in the morning, almost five hours. (And also, finally, a piece of Sachertorte, but not at the famous Hotel Sacher or Hotel Demels, both of which claim to be the originator of the chocolate confection. We found the two hotels, but they wanted too much money for a single tiny piece. Ridiculous! I can make it myself!) Before I forget, I must write something about our room in Vienna. It is cheap, but tacky. It is a small pension in the vicinity of the west train station. The curtains are too big for the windows, there is no carpet, the light bulb hanging from the ceiling is bare, and the proprietor is an old Yugoslavian woman who is entirely too much like Nona. It’s horrible. I was first kind of ticked off at how horrible a place this was, but now it just seems funny. And we’re saving money, at least; this room is only 530 schillings a night (Graz was 600, Zell am See 630, and Salzburg 700!). We planned to have dinner at the restaurant “The White Chimneysweep” (a recommendation from a friend at work), but it was pretty ritzy, and they didn’t accept Visa cards (too bad). That’s about it. Tomorrow, on to Nurenberg. |
| Samstag, 9 Mai – Nürnberg/Erlangen | |
| Wir sind in Franken drei Nächte
geblieben bei der Familie Weissler in Erlangen.
Bärbel und Johannes sind sehr, sehr nett, und wir
haben ganz “zu Hause” sich gefühlt. Am ersten Tag sind wir nach Bamberg gefahren, wo wir den Dom besucht haben. Später haben wir den Bamberg-spezialität “Rauchbier” getrunken. Es war ein bißchen dunkel, und es riecht und schmecht so wie “smoke”, ganz stark und interresant. Nachmittag sind wir nach Nürnberg gefahren. Wir haben viel zu Fuß gegangen, und ich war ein bißchen “blau” vom Bier. Trotzdem sind wir gegangen und spazieren, und wir haben Nürnbergerwürstel gegessen, im “Bratwursthäusle”. Ach sie waren so gut! Wir haben auch Nürnberger Lebkuchen gekauft, zwei Dose und eine Pakete. Wir haben St. Sebald Kirche besucht, we war schön. Est is unglaublich wie die Kirche fast ganz kaputt war, und dann ist aufgebaut werden. Dem nächsten Tag sind wir nach Würzburg gefahren. Wir haben den Residenz besucht (und ein Führung genommen); fast alles darin war kaputt in Kriegsjahren auch. Dann sind wir durch die Hofgarten gegangen; es war schön und warm. Ja, dieser Tag haben wir ganz schönes Wetter gehabt. In Würzburg habe ich zwei schöne Tafeldecke gekauft. Für Abendessen, Johannas und Bärbel haben uns zu einer sehr schöner Restaurant eingeladen. Es war sehr hoch (am Berg). Der Sohn des Johannes und Bärbel, Wolfgang, hat mitgenommen. Jetzt ist es Samstag und wir sind “unterwegs” nach Koblenz. Das Wetter ist wunderschön. Johannes und Bärbel haben uns zum Bahnhof gefahren. Johannes ist so wie Garry! Er ist ein richtiger Weissler. |
We’re in the Franken region of Germany for
three nights, staying with the Weissler family in
Erlangen. Johannes and his wife Bärbel are quite
nice, and we have felt very “at home”. The first day of our stay we took a day trip to Bamberg, where we visited the Bamberger Dom. Afterwards we sampled the Bamberg speciality “Rauchbier”. It was a bit dark, and both smelled and tasted like smoke – quite a strong and unique flavor. In the afternoon we went to Nürnberg. We walked quite a bit, and I was feeling a little off from the beer. Nevertheless we strolled about, ate some Nurnberger bratwurst in the “Bratwursthäusle”. Boy were they good! We also bought some Nurnberger lebkuchen, two cans and one package. We then visited St. Sebald’s church, it was pretty. It is unbelievable, really, that this church was nearly completely destroyed during the war and subsequently rebuilt. The next day we went to Würzburg. We visited the Residenz and took a tour. Practically everything within was destroyed during the war. We then walked through the Hofgarten, it was beautiful and warm. (Today was really the best weather we’ve had so far.) Shopping a little later, I bought two tablecloths. For dinner that evening Johannes and Bärbel took us to a wonderful restaurant, whose name I don’t recall. It was situated high up on a hillside. Their son Wolfgang accompanied us. Today (Saturday) and we’re on our way to Koblenz. The weather is again absolutely gorgeous. Johannes and Bärbel took us to the train station. Johannes is so much like Garry...it is amazing. He is a true Weissler! |
| Sonntag, 10 Mai (Mutterstag) – Koblenz | |
| Wann wir in Koblenz ankamen, zuerst haben
wir im Hotel unserer Koffer eingestecht. Dann sind
wir zu Fuß gegangen. Wir haben der Mosel
gesehen, und das Wetter war sehr schön und
warm. Wir haben eine kleine Rundfahrt gemacht, an
ein kleines Schiff. Heute (Sonntag) sind wir nach
Cochem an einem anderen Schiff, den
“Köln-Düsseldorfer” Schiff. Es war
kostenlos weil wir unsere Eurailpasses gehabt haben.
Das Wetter war ab und zu, meisteins nicht schlecht.
In Cochem war das Wetter böse, grau , wolkig, und
kalt. Wir sind auf dem Berg (zum Cochen-burg)
gegangen, aber das Aussicht war nicht gut. Wir haben drei Flaschen Wein gekauft (2 Spätlese und 1 Auslese), dann sind wir zum Hotel zurückgekommen. Wir haben eine Flaschke Wein getrunken, mit Pretzels vom Bahnhof. (Zuerst natürlich haben wir Abendessen genommen: Pizza in einem kleinen Restaurant in der Nähe von das Hotel. Und jetzt bin Ich sehr müde. Ich habe schon ein Bad genommen – schön. Robert ist ein Klutz im Bad; er kann nur Duschen nehmen, glaube Ich. Wir haben ein Fischreiher gesehen, und andere Vögel. Wir haben entschieden, daß das Taube wie “Ich bin blöd, Ich bin blöd” klingt. Ha |
When we arrived in Koblenz, first we dropped
our luggage off at the hotel, then went out on foot.
We viewed the Mosel River. The weather was quite nice
so we went out on a small boat trip on the river.
Today, Sunday, we went to Cochem on another, larger boat,
one of the Köln-Düsseldorfer line. They
accepted our Eurailpasses (what a deal!) so the trip was
free. The weather while on the boat was variable,
mostly not too awful. In Cochem it was terrible, gray,
cloudy, and cold. We walked up to the overlook, but
the view was not too good due to the lousy conditions. We bought three bottles of wine (two Spätlese and one Auslese), then returned to Koblenz and our hotel. We drank one of the bottles that same night, with pretzels from the train station. (We did, of course, have dinner first: pizza in a small restaurant near the hotel.) And now I’m very tired. I had a very nice bath. Robert is having trouble taking his, I guess he is only capable of taking showers! We saw a Grey Heron today and many other birds. We decided that the pigeons, with their typical head-bobbing stupid-looking behavior, had a call that sounded as if they were proclaiming, “Ich bin blöd! Ich bin blöd!” (I’m an idiot! I’m an idiot!) |
| Montag, 11 Mai – Koblenz (Köln, Trier) | |
| Heute sind wir nach Köln und Trier
gefahren. Köln ist fantastisch, inbesonderes,
der Kölner Dom. Es ist eine Riesenkirche!
Wir haben gelesen daß der Dom über 600 Jahre
gebaut worden ist. Man kann nicht fassen, wie
groß der Dom ist. Und drinnen – unglaublich
schön. Die Glasmalerien sind so schön, mit
so viele Farben. Der Dom ist sehr hoch, auch.
Ich kann nicht beschreiben wie schön der Dom ist! Wir sind zu Fuß gegangen in Fußgängerzone, dann sind wir mit der Bahn nach Koblenz zurückgefahren. Wir sind mit noch einer Zug sofort nach Trier gefahren. Das Wetter war ein bißchen heller in Trier; in Köln war es grau noch mal. Trier war auch schön, die “Porta Negra” ist etwas zu sehen. Wir sind im Trier Dom gewesen, und es ist ganz heßlich. Es war eine Gothische Kirche, und dann im 18. Jahrhundert es im Barochstyl gemacht worden ist. Es sieht ganz falsch aus! Wir sind zu Fuß ein bißchen mehr gegangen, zu der Frauenkirche, Palace, Garten, usw. Ich habe nicht viele Photos heute genommen, nur 2-3 vom Zugfenster. Am Morgen gehen wir nach Heidelberg, an einer TEE Zug. Nur fünf Tage mehr. Hoffentlich sind alle unsere Katze gesundlich. Ich kann nicht warten sie um zu sehen. |
Today we went to Köln and Trier.
Köln is fantastic, especially the Kölner
Cathedral. It is a gigantic church. We had read
that it took 600 years to build it. One cannot grasp
how large the cathedral is. And inside, unbelievably
beautiful. The stained glass was stunning with many,
many colors. The cathedral is quite tall as
well. I just cannot describe how amazing it is. We walked through the pedestrian zone, then took the train back to Koblenz, where we caught another train bound for Trier. The weather, at least, was a bit lighter in Trier; in Köln it was pretty gray. Trier was pretty nice; the Roman Porta Negra is something to behold. We also visited the Trier Cathedral, which was incredibly ugly. It was a Gothic church, originally, until the 18th century when it was “remade” in the Baroque style. It looks completely ridiculous. We walked a bit more, to the Frauenkirche, Palace, gardens, and so forth. I didn’t take hardly any photographs today, though, only two or three from the train window. In the morning we’re headed for Heidelberg on a TEE (Trans-Europe Express). Only five days left on this trip. I hope our cats Ace, Footsie, and Abby are healthy; I can’t wait to see them. |

| Wir haben kein TEE genommen, es gab ein
Zuschlag und wir wollten nicht das bezahlen. Wir
haben in Heidelberg um Mittag angekommen, und es hat viel
geregnet. Wir sind ins Hotel geblieben der ganzer
Tag. Mittwoch, am Morgen, sind wir zum Schloß Heidelberg gegangen (zu Fuß, natürlich). Das Wetter war ab und zu, nicht viel regen außer eine Stunde nachmittags. Wir haben auch das Zoo gesehen, und das Zoo hat viele Vögel (inbesonderes “Owls”). Das Schloß Heidelberg ist ganz schön, es wird mit rote Sandstein gebaut. Alle die Bäume sind grün – hell, dunkel, und inzwischen – und das Grün mit das Rot machen ein besonderes Blick. Unser Hotel in Heidelberg, Hotel Kohler, ist ganz nett. 116,- DM pro Nacht, aber bequem. Und wir haben auch eines Farbfernsehen. Es gibt ein British-sendung, so wie so “MTV”, es ist komisch. Nicht viele Amerikanische Gruppen singen hier, aber Falco ist sehr popular. Zur Zeit gibt es eine Franzosisches Leid. |
Well, we didn’t take the TEE, there was a
surcharge for taking it and we were too cheap to pay.
We arrived in Heidelberg midday, and it rained cats and
dogs. We stayed holed up in the hotel the entire
afternoon. Wednesday morning we went to Schloß Heidelberg, on foot, of course. The weather again was pretty variable, but at least it didn’t rain (except for one hour in the afternoon). We also visited the Heidelberg Zoo, which had a good collection of birds, especially owls. Schloß Heidelberg, built of red sandstone, was quite pretty. The surrounding trees were all shades of green, and the red of the Schloß against the green was an especially beautiful sight. Our hotel in Heidelberg, the Hotel Kohler, is pretty good. 116 Deutsch Marks per night, but pretty comfortable. We have a color television, at least. There’s a British program something like MTV on at the moment, it’s pretty funny. Haven’t seen many American groups; Falco is pretty big right now, though. At the moment a French song is playing. |
| Donnerstag-Samstag, 14-16 Mai – München | |
| Wir haben München erreichnet um 1300
Uhr, und haben viele Sachen gekauft: Schere für meine
Mutter, Schokolade für Judy Holloway, Bierkruge
für Steve und Lee, ein Schal für die Tante des
Roberts, und eine Wetterstation für mich. Dann
sind wir nach Pullach gefahren. Der nächste Tag
sind wir mit Fahrräde gefahren, zuerst zum Tierpark
Hellbrun und später zum Deutsches Museum. Das
Museum war toll; wir haben die Luftkraft Ausstellung
gesehen. Am Morgen (Samstag) hat es geregnet, aber trotzdem sind wir zum Münchner Residenz und die Alte Pinakotek Museum gegangen. Nachmittags haben wir mit Hans, Lisa, und noch ein Mann spaziert zu eine Kloster, ich kann nicht mich den Name erinnern! Schade. Heute abend kommt Bodo. Am Morgen Sonntag fliegen wir nach Kalifornien. Unsere Reise war sehr toll, es macht viel Spaß. Ich bin traurig, zu Hause zu gehen, aber haben wir diese Reise viel genießt! |
We arrived in Munich around 1:00 pm, went
shopping, and bought a lot of things: scissors for my
mother, chocolate for Judy Holloway, beer steins for Steve
and Lee, a scarf for Robert’s aunt, and a barometer for
me. We then went on to Pullach, back to the
Pruggers. The next day we rode bicycles, first to
Tierpark Hellbrun, then later to the Deutsches
Museum*. The museum was a lot of fun, and we saw a
good airplane exhibit. Saturday morning it rained a lot, but we went out anyway, to the Munich Residenz and the Alte Pinakotek museum. In the afternoon we, along with Hans, Lisa, and another gentleman, walked to a nearby cloister, whose name I cannot remember. Darn. At any rate, it was a nice walk. This evening Bodo is coming over, and tomorrow morning we fly home. This trip overall was great and we had a lot of fun. I’m kind of sad to be going home now, but we can say we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. *I enjoyed the Deutsches Museum ever so much more than when we visited in January 1984, probably because this time I could mostly read the exhibit descriptions, which are obviously all in German. |
