PTC provides excellent preparation for all Piano Teaching Diplomas through exposure to the latest in piano teaching pedagogy. Our purpose is to provide useful information about the art of being a children's piano teacher for the benefit of teachers, parents and children.
Although we can't train you musically as a piano teacher, we assume that you already have enough of a proper musical education to offer your services to kids as a piano teacher, or are a parent who wants to introduce their children to the piano in a friendly way.
In this course you will find the piano games, tips, and musical techniques you will need to interest kids in the piano, in the real world today. You will find us referring to a series of books called Piano by Number as well as many others, such as the fine books in the Bastien Series. This curriculum is the result of years of daily effort and study wherein the authors, all master piano teachers, observed children attempting to learn the piano. Repetition must be disguised in some manner that counteracts the mind-numbing effect of rote practicing. Some issues require careful observation of the child to find a way to unlock their abilities further.
In order to be an effective children's piano teacher, you'll need to be able to be rather theatrical.
Children's piano requires a balance between fun and work, and the ability to disguise work as fun whenever possible. A short essay reflecting on the ideas presented in the first PTC weekend, using the PTC guiding principles and pre-course reading – in relation to each students own teaching.

Students undertake a 7-10 week Case Study, based on teaching a piece(s) to a pupil, putting the PTC Guiding Principles and course ideas into practice, and reflecting on and evaluating the teaching process.
Students are required to keep a notebook to hand as they teach, to jot down thoughts and observations as they occur during teaching, to help augment and underpin their assessed assignments.
Students select a title from a list of titles to explore current thinking, and develop their own teaching, in an area of particular interest to them.
With the aid of keeping a Practice Diary, students write up 6-10 weeks of preparation for a 2-3 minute piece of Grade 6 – 8 in standard. Programme notes (200 words) and an analysis of the piece form part of this assignment. Following the performance, students then write up a Post Performance Reflection (750 words), relating it to their preparation and any other relevant factors. Students are required to keep a Practice Diary for planning practice, as well as recording thoughts and observations as they occur during practice. The course leads to The Certificate of the Piano Teachers’ Course (Cert PTC) a recognised piano teaching qualification, and which entitles holders to full membership and benefits of The European Piano Teachers’ Association (EPTA UK), the country’s leading professional body for piano teachers.
To attain the Cert PTC students are required to attend at least 75% of the course, participate in workshops, show evidence of self-reflection and the implementation of ideas from the course into their teaching and playing. Holders of the qualification will also receive a Cert PTC logo to use on their website, business cards and any relevant marketing materials. Although it is highly recommended that students complete the written assignments for the benefit of their own teaching, and it is essential they do so to qualify for the Cert PTC, it is possible to attend the course and choose not to do the written assignments. The comprehensive training offered by the Piano Teachers’ Course, with its breadth and depth of pedagogy, practical application and relevant written assignments, is excellent preparation for those taking other piano teaching diplomas. Lessons were used as a living laboratory to see what children actually could do comfortably at the piano. Other issues simply require a new attitude on the part of the teacher, usually one of extreme patience.
Many an impatient and impulsive piano teacher has destroyed a child's desire to play piano with a single, ill-considered criticism. This assignment enables Students to consider and digest course ideas and helps them prioritise their focus and aims for Module A.
Evidence is provided through two 20-30 minute recordings of lessons, and a teaching diary*, in addition to the write-up.
A brief, non-assessed record of the preparation process in the Practice Diary; and an analysis of the piece, and the experience of a live performance provides valuable preparation for the first written assignment. Students who choose this option, and attend at least 75% of the course, are eligible for The Piano Teachers’ Course Certificate of Attendance.
