Students who have attended Waldorf College’s summer piano camp have gone on to do well in piano competitions, but more importantly, have created life-long friendships with others who share their love of playing the piano.
Students will participate in a variety of activities during this camp, both educational and social. Located in Forest City, Iowa, Waldorf is a four-year, residential, liberal arts college that has been educating students for over a century. Hotchkiss Summer Piano Portal is a wonderful opportunity for young pianists to work with world-class teachers, enjoy a rigorous routine of lessons and masterclasses, attend inspiring concerts, and perform on a world-class stage. In a friendly, collaborative environment, students will be encouraged to discuss common issues facing young pianists: what is the best repertoire for an audition or competition? Come to Lakeville this summer to refine your technique, explore new repertoire, enhance your listening skills, or find new ideas for your interpretations.
Piano Program Applicants: Piano Program applicants are required to submit a file (audio or video) using SlideRoom. He has performed at the Tanglewood Institute, the Liszt and Wagner International Festival, in Italy, the Prague International Piano Festival, Festival de Musica de Girona, in Spain, and the Liszt Festival, in Rio de Janeiro. Some of his past engagements include concerts at Bryant Park and Union Square Park, in New York City, both sponsored by the New York Times’s Young Performers Series.
Critically acclaimed by the New York Concert Review as having given "the most genuinely fascinating recital debut in many a moon," for her New York solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall, pianist Gisele Nacif Witkowski has been performing extensively throughout Brazil, United States, China, and Europe.
Luiz de Moura Castro is a graduate of the National School of Music, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (summa cum laude) and of the Lorenzo Fernandez Academy of Music, Rio de Janeiro and the Liszt Academy, Budapest. A native of Rio de Janeiro, he gave his debut recital at the age of 9 at the Teatro Municipal after winning a competition. His discography includes over 40 CDs for Ensayo (Spain), Euterpe (Switzerland), L’Art (Brazil) and Musical Heritage (United States). This past year, Luiz de Moura Castro appeared in festivals in Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Canada, Venezuela and the United States.
His latest recordings include the Rachmaninov Second and Third Piano concertos, Paganini Variations, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Momo Precoce by Villa-Lobos, Liszt's Concertos No.
Acclaimed for the heartfelt intensity and technical mastery of his playing, pianist Joseph Kalichstein enthralls audiences all over the globe, winning equal praise as orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. With his diverse repertoire of works ranging from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms to works by Bartok, Prokofiev and others, Mr. Joseph Kalichstein is a founding member of the famed Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, now in their 38th touring season. Oxana Yablonskaya is one of a number of hugely talented expatriate Russian pianists to have emerged from the post-World War II era.
Later on in 1977 Yablonskaya gave critically acclaimed concerts at Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall before capacity crowds. In 2004, Yamaha engaged Yablonskaya to serve as an artistic advisor for master classes in New York and to conduct yearly master classes in Paris. Witkowski also performs regularly with her husband, pianist Fabio Witkowski, as the Witkowski Piano Duo. Witkowski received a full scholarship from the Brazilian Government to study at the Manhattan School of Music with Ms.
Moura Castro has appeared with the Orchestre de Chambre, Lausanne, Lisbon Radio Orchestra, Filarmonichi di Turino, Bratislav & Janacek orchestras, Yaroslav Symphony, Russia, the Dallas, Fort Worth, Hartford and Syracuse symphonies, besides all the major Brazilian orchestras and Parabobo Orquestra, Venezuela.
He appeared on the front cover of the June 1998 issue of Amadeus, the most important music magazine of Spain with a four-page extensive interview included within. He organizes the annual Liszt Festival in Rio de Janeiro and is on the board of the American Liszt Society. Kalichstein has collaborated with such celebrated conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, James Conlon, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Lawrence Foster, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Leonard Slatkin, Edo de Waart, David Zinman and the late George Szell and Erich Leinsdorf. The Trio continues to play in major music capitals as well as on all the great university concert series. Yablonskaya possesses an all-encompassing technique and vast repertory that takes in works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and many others. A gifted child pianist, she studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexander Goldenweiser.
She regularly concertized thereafter, appearing in both recitals and as a soloist with major symphony orchestras across the U.S. In 1990 she created a near-sensation in her former homeland, giving several sold-out concerts and conducting master classes at the Moscow Conservatory. Yablonskaya established her own piano institute in 2008 at Castelnuove di Garfagnana in Tuscany, Italy.
She has performed as soloist with the New Jersey Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Macon Symphony, Eastern Music Festival orchestra, among others. Mayadas began playing Mozart melodies by ear at age three, performed in public at age four, and at age nine became one of the youngest winners of a BMI Student Composer Award for her string quartet. Mayadas is founder of the Concerto Project, a charitable trust dedicated to creating, promoting and sustaining new works for our 21st century repertoire. Students who successfully complete their workshop will receive a certificate of completion. The Summer Piano Institute at Ithaca College is a comprehensive program of varied musical experiences held on the beautiful IC campus.
The Ithaca Writers Institute, a noncredit summer program for high school students, offers two weeks of intensive creative and professional writing workshops on the campus of Ithaca College in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.

They have appeared together in prestigious settings such as the Gardens of Villa Rufolo, in Ravello, Italy, at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, as well as several recitals in the United States, Europe, and Brazil. He has performed with the world’s greatest orchestras, from the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras to the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony, from the NHK and New York Philharmonic to the Cleveland Orchestra.
Its most recent recording project is a CD devoted to works that the eminent American composer Ellen Zwilich had written for the Trio, just released on the Azica label.

She has made numerous recordings throughout her career, including for Melodiya, Naxos, Connoisseur Society, and Classical Records. In 1977, thanks in great part to a petition signed by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers, Katharine Hepburn, and other notables, Yablonskaya emigrated to the United States with her father and son, Dmitry. With the appearance in 1995 of volume one of the piano music of Tchaikovsky, Yablonskaya launched a series of highly successful recordings for the Naxos label. Her concerts have been broadcast on WGBH in Boston, WFMT in Chicago and WXXI in New York, and her own composition aired on WQXR radio in New York City. She has received awards and top prizes from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, The Abby Whiteside Foundation, Artists International, the New Jersey Governor’s Arts Education Award Council, and ASCAP. Rebecca Davis is a concert pianist who took part in Waldorf’s Community Artist Series in the spring. These and other topics will be covered in daily workshops over the course of the two-week program. Witkowski has given solo recitals in the Czech Republic, Brazil, Italy, China, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Boston, Hartford, Chicago, New York and Washington, DC. One of their latest projects has been to perform Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with the Bowen McCauley dance company, celebrating the 100 years anniversary of this masterpiece.
She became the first prize winner of several piano competitions including the "The Villa- Lobos National Contest" (ES), the "Soloist Contest" (MG), the "Eleventh Young Instrumentalists Brazilian Contest" (SP), the "Concerto Competition of the Santa Marcelina College" (SP), the "Young Soloists Contest of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra" (SP), and was a recipient of the "Artists International's 1998 Twenty-Sixth Young Artists Piano Award" (NY), among others. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the Hartt School of Music where she studied under the tutelage of Luiz de Moura Castro.
He serves as the Chamber Music Advisor to the Kennedy Center and is the Artistic Director of the Center’s Fortas Chamber Music Concerts.
In the 1960s Yablonskaya captured prizes at three major competitions: the Jacques Long-Thibaud (1963), the Rio de Janeiro (1965), and the Vienna Beethoven (1969).
Her son would become the renowned conductor and cellist Dmitry Yablonsky, with whom she would make several recordings. A student of Peter Serkin, John Corigliano, Miriam Gideon and Patricia Zander, she graduated from New England Conservatory with honors and distinction, winning the school’s concerto competition. Whalen Center for Music, where a nationally and internationally known piano faculty provides a lively array of daily lessons, workshops, classes, and supervised practice. Recent engagements included concerts at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and at Union Square Park (NY), sponsored by the New York Times Young Performers Series. She has also appeared on various radio and TV broadcasts including WQXR in New York and TV Cultura in São Paulo. Kalichstein has also been a frequent guest pianist with the world’s most beloved string quartets, including the Guarneri and Emerson Quartets, with whom he played the Shostakovich Piano Quintet in their Shostakovich Cycles in London and Washington. He continues to hold the inaugural Chamber Music Chair at the Juilliard School, where he also teaches a limited number of advanced piano students. Despite numerous concert invitations from abroad, however, the Soviet government forbade her from performing outside Eastern Bloc borders.
In the evenings, they participate in a student reading series and interact directly with visiting writers and publishing professionals who have expert insight into the craft and business of writing.
In Brazil, he received the first prize at the renowned Villa-Lobos Piano Competition, as well as the Lorenzo Fernandez Piano Competition.
Her piano students have received numerous awards in regional, national, and international piano competitions. He has been awarded the first prize at the Connecticut State Music Teachers Association’s Young Artist Piano Concerto Competition, and received third prize, as well as an award for the best Stravinsky performance, in the Ibla Grand Prize International Piano Competition, in Italy.
He is currently on the full-time faculty of The Hartt School of Music at The University of Hartford.
In addition, he works in Rio de Janeiro as a visiting professor at the Pro Arte Seminarios de Musica and is chair of the Piano Department at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain.
