The Tanpura (also known as a Tambura) is an important musical instrument from India, with the two different names resulting from the region of use.
The Miraj tanpura (named after the town in Maharashtra, India) is primarily used in northern Indian Hindustani classical music. In contrast to the Miraj, the Tanjore  tambura is the classic instrument played by Carnatic musicians in southern India. The third type of tanpura is much smaller than the two other forms – only about two to three feet in length.

Although they resemble the single tumba Indian sitar, they differ in a number of significant ways. These instruments come in three main forms: Miraj, Tanjore (Thanjavur) and a smaller, half-size instrument known as a Tamburi.
These instruments also have resonators; but they are larger and made of wood, rather than the gourds used on Miraj tanpuras.
These smaller and lighter Tamburis are ideal for the traveling musician and often preferred among string-playing vocal artists for accompanying solo performances.

Because they do not feature the larger wood or round gourd type resonators, the volume, sound and tone cannot match the levels or richness of their larger cousins.
This Mridangam is the principal percussion instrument in South Indian classical Carnatic music. These instruments also come in “male” and “female” versions, with the male instrument larger and heavier than the female. The smaller tamburi may also differ in the number of strings used, which can vary from four to six, or even more.
Like the sitar, they provide exotic sounds and resonant tones that will delight almost any musician or music lover. A small dough paste is applied on the outside center of the bass head to achieve a low bass tone.
There are no tuning blocks, although they can be inserted under the straps to increase the pitch. When played, the drum is held horizontally, and played with the fingers and palms of the hands.
