Generally most blaxploitation movies were filmed in the 70s, but the research at blaxploitation pride has found that blaxploitation is not a simple as "blacks" being "exploitated" thus earning the title as blaxploitation. Featuring Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes, this movie all about jazz from every aspect rather the creative or the business side, or the ups and downs really capturing the atmosphere. I mean, you’ve been out there, you’re on the bandstand, you look out into the audience, what do you see?

The story of Bleek's and Shadow's friendly rivalry on stage which spills into their professional relationship and threatens to tear apart the quartet.
The 70's was a Golden Age on so many levels and the influence echoes around the world in present day. Blaxploitation is a science that needs to be properly broken down and delivered in a manner where one can distinguish between blaxploitation and black cinema.
The story is told in circular fashion beginning with the main character, Bleek (Denzel Washington), as a kid being forced to play trumpet by his authoritarian mother and passive father, while his friends outside pester him for being a sissy for not coming out to play baseball. Rather through his band or his two love interests, music is priority as everything else doesn’t even come a distant second. You see Japanese, you see, you see West Germans, you see, you know, Slabobic, anything except our people - it makes no sense. Blax-Pride is here to help clear any confusion and offer a wealth of information on blaxploitation and black cinema. This leads us to the character as an adult and a successful trumpeter leading his own jazz quintet.
His childhood friend and now manager, played by Spike Lee, has a gambling obsession that in common with the main character becomes his downfall.
It incenses me that our own people don’t realize our own heritage, our own culture, this is our music, man.
Touching on the most sensitive material in America at its time and exploiting them on the big screen or the vinyls in your record player produced for a glorified genre that nobody will ever be able to duplicate.

As the film progresses we see him fall due to his obsession, only to resign himself to passing on his trumpet legacy to his son.
The two jazz club managers are obsessed with money and it is this obsession that alienates them from their artists leading to this disconnects which leads to the club’s downfall. This is something I only really noticed in this Spike Lee film when compared to his other works. Our mission at Blax-Pride is to educate those who are unfamiliar with this era and combine knowledge with those who are familiar. It is the pianist in Washington’s quintet that is obsessed with his French girlfriend that constantly gets him in trouble and the source of scorn from the other band members. The suggested moral was summed up by Spike Lee through a quote by John Coltrane speaking on his album A Love Supreme. Finally to the saxophonist, Shadow Henderson (Wesley Snipes), who is obsessed with topping Bleek, by holding long solos and going as far as courting one of his girlfriends. It is only through him that we see an obsession turning out good, because in the end he gets the girl and to be leader of his own successful band. Though it is debatable because once he sees his long time rival fall from grace, captured in a beautiful scene in which Bleek plays as a guest to Shadow’s newly formed and successful quintet featuring his ex-girlfriend on vocals, there is not a single hint of triumph on his face, as Bleek stumbles through his chords before walking off stage.
