Scanning for unprotected LAN resources
You can scan for unprotected resources or shares on your LAN. After completion, a list of the shares that the DS-Client does not currently backup is generated. You can choose to have the wizard automatically create backups for these shares.
1. On the Tools menu, point to Unprotected LAN Resource, and then click Discovery.
2. Do the following:
a) In the Path box, type the IP address or name of the computer you want to scan.
b) To add a network item to the scan, select the item, and then click Add.
c) To exclude a network item from the scan, select the item, and then click Exclude. The item’s parent must already be in the discovery list.
d) To add or exclude a specific subnet, click Subnet, and the do the following:
1. In the Subnet address box, type the first three parts of the IP address followed by a 0 in the last part to signify the subnet. For example, 12.34.56.0 searches all resources on the “.56” subnet.
2. To add the subnet, click Add.
3. To exclude the subnet, click Exclude.
e) To add or exclude scanned network items that were discovered by the previous scan, click Select, and then do the following:
1. To add the scanned network item, select the item, and then click Add.
2. To exclude the scanned network item, select the item, and then click Exclude.
f) To remove a network item from the discovery list, select the item, and then click Remove.
g) Click Next.
3. Do the following:
a) To add credentials for the discovery scan process, click Add.
b) To edit credentials, select the credentials, and then click Modify.
NOTE: To delete credentials, select the credentials, and then click Delete.
c) In the Connect as box, type the user name
d) In the Password box, type the password.
e) In the From box, if applicable select the computer where the DS-Client will verify your credentials. Normally this will be the same as the server that you are connecting to. However if the computer running DS-Client is a member of a domain, you can select from the available list of domains.
f) In the Priority box, enter the priority for the credentials that the DS-Client will use to attempt to scan the shares. The lower the number, the higher the priority.
g) Click OK.
h) Click Next.
4. Do the following:
a) Select the Scheduled option.
NOTE: To remove a schedule, select the Not scheduled option.
b) In the Available schedules box, select the schedule that you want to assign for the scanning process, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you are an administrator of backup operator you can create or edit a schedule by clicking New or Edit.
c) Click Next.
5. Do the following:
a) To create a backup for each unprotected computer that the scan identifies, select the Create new backup set for unprotected computers/shares check box.
b) In the Owner box, select the owner of any backup created by this process.
c) In the Schedule box, select the schedule to apply to any backup created by this process.
d) To include the Windows System State backup item for a new computers, select the Add System State for new computer check box.
e) To include the Windows Services Database backup item for new computers, select the Add Service Database for new computer check box.
f) To send an email notification on completion of the scan, select the Send notification check box.
g) In the E-mail box, type the email address of the recipient for the email notification.
h) Beside Format, select whether you want th email notification to be in HTML or Plain Text format.
i) Click Next.
6. Do the following:
a) In the Attempt to reconnect box, enter the number of times the scan process will attempt to reconnect and the interval between attempts.
b) In the Number of threads for scanning box, enter the number of scan threads to be used by the process.
c) To start the immediately, select the Start scan now check box.
d) Click Finish.
